Community Event / Creation The C-Pod: A DIY Command seat (build log)

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

AMAZING!!! YOU ARE LEGEND!

Thanks Dethmunk :) I aim to kill ... err ... please.

You can extract revenge...
You have to build the whole ship now around the cockpit! :eek::S

ha ha ha!!

:D

Cheers!

Keep up the good work master craftsman! ;)

Thanks Silent Run. Actually, I'm seriously considering replacing my desk with ... something ...

I'd contact Mobious, here on the forum, he does fantastic art work and could (if supplied vector graphic with correct positions of layout) probably whip up something amazing for your Warthog templates. Just a thought, he's usually pretty busy though. :D

Thanks for that Sanderson. I looked up that name but couldn't find it. There are three Mobius (Mobi pl?) but I couldn't find any posts suggesting who it might be.

Up early to sand, sand, sand (erson) ...

NO chance of that here chap!

Mobius

I'm also able to do vector graphics (but not such an artist as Mobius)
if you get stuck.

Early-ish yes, but first thread checked!

Thanks and doh! I should have figured who it was :eek:

I'll get the necessary dimensions and drop him a line.

Interested in your work too btw. The design only needs to be simple. Do you have any examples of your work available to peruse or thoughts / ideas? Very interested.

I did this sketch quite recently .. (mock up of a suggested comms UI) ..

radio4.gif

This composite, might be semi-interesting for your project also ..

observation.gif

In this case, only the logo counts as "mine" and it's pretty simple ..
But the TEXTURE springs an idea .. steel flooring material (background in round logo)
I wonder if that could make part of the surface texture for your mounts .. (not 3D of course)

Maybe a small section printed .. or the joystick side mounted on the same texture?
Heck though (suddenly I think) why not use the real thing!

EDIT: not a great idea actually (as real flooring texture too "big") .. might inspire an industrial effect, in part however.

Thanks for posting this and I like the first one Winterwalker, great job. I like to use real materials rather than printed ones; I'm looking for some fairly basic 'textures', perhaps something akin to the striping effect on the game's UI but boxed off with simple rounded outlines ... this is a nice challenge to have :)

Roger that.

Am quite sure, whatever you come up with, will knit in, with what you have so far.

Standing by .. if and when or as required, Commander :cool:

The lid for the stick case has been completed. I had to re-cover and re-fill as I wasn't happy with the initial results. Much improved on the second occasion.

My Neutric connectors also arrived. I will fit these into the side units of the seat:

Now onto the base.

Nice, I bet we could get a donation going to keep you home from work a few more days next week just to keep the build going ;)

Btw, TIOO, I blame this on you!! Thanks for all the potential future costs, late nights, blood shot eyes, rage quits and complete lack of spare time :p

Haha! Nice try ... you were just looking for an excuse :)

The design look excellent. Are you committing to the build? I'd love to see someone else get the bug :)

Filled, sanded and covered the base:

Excellent work on the joystick build .. again ...
Looking forward to seeing the twin (hands on throttle and stick) pics!

3D models too .. there's some diverse talent in the community !!

For me I spent 10 mins coffee break doing a vector, for a warthog overlay ..
Haven't done any labels a yet, but switching out background textures is a snap .

3 instant examples

I did try out Yosemite Sam and Hello Kitty of course .. but I'll spare you those!!

This is something I saw on a sim racing site by a chap who goes my the name of mr_nismo. It's a great design and could also be used as a basis for a sim pit:

He didn't get it finished as far as I understand.

Food for thought.

Very cool Winterwalker! Are you sure that's crocodile and not thargoid skin?

I need to learn more Photoshop methinks. Yes 3D modelling, another skill I've yet to acquire. I know it's just an investment of time but I seem to spend what I have spare building :)

Ive not commited yet, its a longstanding issue for me that I dont have a good place to work at. My relatives live some distance away and I myself dont have a garage or similar either.

But with the desktop simpit more or less finished, i have felt the urge to start a new project. And your build might have been the final nail driven in!

As of now im drawing up some concepts like the one above (BTW winterwalker, its drawn in sketchup, a very simple free software where everyone can make 3d models!) while at the same time searching the net for various ideas, materials, stores trying to figure out how and what to do, where to buy from, potential costs and so on.

If I feel that ive reached far enough in the prebuild plans to actually get something started, and i manage to solve my workplace issue, I think ill get the build started. But thats a fair amount of IFs so probably not very soon :)

I think Thargoid Hide .. YES haha

Done with Flash MX ...
(a trial version is available quite easily if you search for it)

There's some amazing ingenuity out there;
Time Machine (a sim pit built of PVC pipe I kid you not)

Couple more just for fun ..

Heres the concepts I drew up for my desktop simpit.
Never got around to printing them as I went with the falcon4.0 layout but even though im not happy with the overall result, it shows how easy it is to get it a bit more interesting just by swapping two colors.

Now that does look very effective Enride.

Good colour scheme ....

9.jpg

The black area represents the cutout .. the orange is edge

=======================================================================================

EDIT1:

Thinner edge around square (screw?) placings

10.jpg

=======================================================================================

EDIT2:

Darker background is new edge (take care with cut out diameters though ..
lines thicken either side of their centre-line) ... x.|.x becomes x...|...x

11.jpg

=======================================================================================

WARNING WARNING : yes .. the circles (light orange band) need to be resized for EDIT3 to be correct ...
