The Eve Online Thread

The community in eve gets a general bad press but it couldn't be further from the truth really I was I many different corps in eve with different focuses but all were mega friendly and helpful to a fault. Which is why I bang on about finding one a joining as a new player within the first few days.

Couldn't agree more. I've been in touch with dozen of corps and hundreds, possibly thousands of players during my 7+ years long EVE career, and I am having (mostly) fond memories. I am still in contact with some people I've met and foght alongside in EVE. As far am I am concerned, this bad image is total nonsense. People are people, there are all kinds, but as in RL it's up to you to decide which one you'll hang out with.

While it is entirely possible to survive all alone, yeah, I would also advice new players to join some corporation as soon as possible, because everything should be easier and more fun in good company, even if it's just few guys in high-sec.

Btw reason I am not coming back is same as yours: it appears that I'm losing control over my time way too easily in that game; problem I've never really experienced with ED (fortunately?) ;)

Very marmite game EVE. I loved it played for 9 years. The key to EVE is this:

JOIN A CORP. JOIN A CORP. JOIN A CORP. JOIN A CORP.

oh and join a corp.

The game is immense and very very deep now a difficult thing for a new player. A month will scratch the surface of the game if playing on your own. Joining a corp will give you a wee bump on the road to get some momentum and not to mention loads of advice and guidance.

The starter systems will have people recruiting there or the official forums if you want to read up on a few. I'd suggest anything casual, located in your timezone, operating in high and low sec and null sec (I'd avoid null sec only corps if your a real new player don't be cannon fodder just yet until you know some of the game)

It is a great game that if you click with it really rewards you. It's a lot deeper than you can first imagine and it's scales very well with the amount of effort you put into it.

JOIN A CORP.

This. EvE is a bizarre game that shouldn't exist. Its a space game with dedicated servers that wants the player to pay every single month, yet has a stupifying learning curve and amount of death. There is no reason why it should exist, yet it does. And even though its not what I am looking for in a space game (dont like the idea of joining a corp :p), I think its awesome that it exists! :D

Ahh I played this game like a maniac for almost 3 years, there were good times and nasty times, got myself up to marauders, got drunk Santa incident giving away all my stuff to ppl on Christmas, was scammend by a corp, scammed others a bit myself - no regrets.
btw, when the f2p part will be a go, or it is already in game?

November.

Tell you what I loved a lot about this game. The gameplay mechanic for exploration. Was a really involved and engaging system that I'd love to see adapted for ED etc.

Really? Well, this alone will have me in the game.

I don't want big ships or whatever. I just want to be the fastest most nimble possible. An explorer and a scout. An irritant to anything large. Is that possible?

^^ I was having tons of fun with stealth bombers in my time, flying in gangs of 10-20 pilots wreaking havoc with fast hit-and-run actions behind enemy lines. T3 cruisers like Proteus are overall better for this job, but they are coming with much higher price and skill tags.

Yes there are a number of smaller ships that are good at exploration. Should point out that exploration in EVE online is not really exploration, its scanning down spawn rooms in order to hack, steal, or shoot at things. But the scanning mechanics are interesting and can be fun in their own right.

And there are smaller dedicated "exploration" ships.

I left before the Sisters of EVE ships were added and they have always made me want to play again.

I actually did the same thing, ran with a stealth bomber group and just had fun in 00.

That would be hundreds of "capital class signatures detected" :D

While the pinnacle of EVE is almost certainly behind us, game is still going pretty strong. ED and SC are not competition, totally different games.

In some ways many EVE Players also wanted space-sims like ED and SC. So I think it's not an entirely different category.

I know, exciting times.

I always wanted to play EVE but I never liked the idea of paying a sub, even for one month, on a game I couldn't at least try out first. Even still, I find it difficult to rationalize paying a sub for any game, including WoW.

Though, me..Mr. Hypocrite dropped a nice chunk of cash on the LEP (the second offering) for ED...just something about subs...I'd rather pay a lump sum and have it forever than pay a sub.

What Jezzah said, the key to having fun in Eve is finding a good bunch of people to play with.
In my case it was a joy to have spent 6 years in New Eden with the criminals of TunDraGon and Teddybears.

It's really the other people that make the game.

Ha I recall Tundragon. Problem is I can't remember why. Were your lot part of the original Fountain alliance?

I loved Eve, played it for 12-14 hours a day when I was made redundant a few years ago but there's a large portion of the community there who are very.. shall we say 'Elitist'. Really had a problem with people having fun and enjoying the game. That caused me to leave the corporation I was in and quit.

Signed up again a couple of weeks ago and have just left my pilot training for most of that time. Hopefully have time to get back into it properly soon, alongside the time I'm putting into ED!

Now it's going F2P at the lower tiers, might be worth dusting off the old smuggling account.

Meaningful smuggling? Player interaction? I'll take a hit of that action!
