The FFED3D Thread

I'm stuck with the same cabin and cargo .bmps no matter what ship I buy.

Not to sure what you mean pappie?.

If you are referring to the cockpit interface then yes it's the same for all the ships.

Or do you mean you just have the same model, which ever ship you buy?.

daft question time, but how do you zoom in on the solar system view in order to autopilot to the space station, its been ages since i played this.

Use the magnifying icons on your control panel, or press F11 to zoom in and F12 to zoom out.

In the original DOS version of FFE, which was made Windows compatible by JJFFE, the background graphics showing your ship's cabin etc. changed through about 6 different types, depending on which ship you had. The cockpit was always the same though.

In glFFE the cockpit changed, compared to JJFFE, but the cabin was always represented by whichever image file you had saved as "96.bmp".

In FFE D3D the cockpit has changed again, but there is still only one type. The cabin graphic uses image file "96.png"

Hope some of that made sense :D

I'm really into this game now. It's pretty cool and I understand why you guys are such huge fans. I finally got rid of my Saker and am now the proud owner of a tricked out Cobra MkIII. However, in viewing some screenshots from other web sites, it looks like there are different bitmaps used for the cabins and cargo areas for different ships. My game doesn't do that. If you use the Russian revamped version, then there aren't additional bitmaps. Personally I don't use it - new models and graphic capabilities are all cool, but there are way too many things that don't work or look sub-par. Brown dwarves, planetary atmospheres looking uncool (and stars visible during the day), some planetary models, rendering issues, etc., etc.

When (if) this mod gets finished and polished, I'll be using it, but now I prefer to stick with JJFFE.

I initially felt the same way but now I've got a graphics card which can handle it I've got a bit addicted to the D3D version
stars visible during the day
Yeah, that is a bit weird!

Wow. I think if I had a problem with D3D I would only roll back as far as glFFE. JJFFE hurts my eyes now :)

My problem with GLFFE is that it looks bad. FFE default LOD looks weird in high resolution, filtering of default low-res textures produces fugly artifacts, exhaust looks abnormally thin, and star field doesn't look right either.
If you can stomach low resolution and lack of filtering, regular (or high-res 640x480) JJFFE looks better, because FFE relies heavily on the way it displays stuff to hide some tricks.

Yep, I was referring mostly to the cargo bay. Thanks for the response.

Yep, perfect sense. Thanks

Thanks for replying. :)

Personally I still enjoy playing JJFFE as well as the FFE D3D versions, never liked the look of the cockpit in the GLFFE version, it seemed a bit bland/basic to me.

I think the FFE D3D version is a great improvement graphically versus the older versions, I've got a pretty good graphics card which of course helps, and for the relatively short time those guys have been working on it, I think they have really done a fantastic job.

Unfortunatly I haven't been able to logon/register (and i've tried many times ) with their site to get any of the updates. But for me what they have done is re-invigorate and add some freshness to a game which is well over a decade old. I'm ok with the parts which aren't finished yet as its interesting to see what will be done next.

And if anyone could point me in the right direction on where to get any updates, it would be much appreciated.

Hi people. I played FFE long time ago, and now I wany to play it some more. I also like JJFFE more than GLFFE. Now, can somebody explain to me in what resolution JJFFE is, and what was the original resolution (320x200 or 640x480, maybe there were different resolutions for different gaming platforms). My graphic card has 800x600 as the lowest resolution, and I cannot make JJFFE play in full screen. Is there a way to play JJFFE in lower resolution but "scalled" as higher (say 320x200 scalled as 960x600, or whatever).
Thanks in advance

Oh, nevermind, I did it. By changing the .cfg file, of course (I am direct from a night shift, so thinking slowly, ;) ).
And the mentioned resolution of 640x480 actually should be 640x400, I presume.

Ok, now I have another problem. It looks like JJFFE is made for 16:10 format. Now in full screen mode picture on my 4:3 monitor looks vertically stretched. Anybody can help with that?
Thanks

Have you tried setting fsletterbox in the cfg file? That sometimes does the trick.

Agreed. Great stuff so far.

Do you mean the patches? The link I've got on my site is here and it should allow you to download the rar files.

The big push at the moment seems to be updating the ships and some of them are looking fantastic. You have to trawl the forums for them, using Google translator if your Russian is getting a bit rusty. Unfortunately if you do find the link via Google translator you'll be unable to click on it to download the file. What I do is open another browser window and navigate to the same post in the original Cyrillic text and then download the file.

So basically, translated version to find what you're looking for and Russian version to actually download it. This thread has a few nice ships tucked away in it.

Thanks Steve. I'll get omto it once the Kids are in bed!

Thanks Steve.
I don't have the "letterbox" option in my cfg file. I use directX 5 installation. I only have options mentioned on this link:
http://jaj22.org.uk/jjffe/winjjffe.html
I did try to add "fsletterbox=0" and "fsletterbox=1" right after the "fsbpp" option, but this didn't work in any way.
I installed the game by unzipping the 1.06 0riginal version, and then uzipping the 2.8 JJFFE version in the game folder.

the bottom of my screen is cut off in this, i cant read all the text. anyone know how to fix this?
Do you mean the scrolling messages on the right side of the console? They do get cut off in FFE D3D, but just use PageUp and PageDown to scroll them manually.

I ve heard about new ships in construction. I suppose in the russian forum. Need I download something else than the mod and the patches? Is being done something else than the ships for the near future? for example new effects, textures... etc

I am anxious...!!!::D

thanks.

All you need is to download the game (obviously!) and the mod (v1.12 is the latest at the moment).

Then download the new ship from the link in the forum and extract the file into the folder for that particular ship. This is usually explained in each post.

The next time you encounter that particular ship it should be the new version :)
