The FFED3D Thread

"lego" modelers wanted

i'm not quiet ready with stud-city ffed3d, but you will need your time to get friendly with ldraw at least and some to build your first model.
i thought about a ruler for each ship to make it easy for you, but since i'm a lazy guy, i leave that up to you.
no, just mail/report me which (ffe) ship you want to build with ldraw. i will send you then a ldraw file of the original model matching the size of ldraw. this would be the easiest way i think, cause you don't have to worry about size, neither shape, everything will be fixed afterwards by me also converting of model and attachement of animations (you just tell me which part should do what.
after i released some models, you will be able to "render" them with blender yourself. interested ones can do it theirselfes of course rightnow.

the basic scale is: x/y axis 1 block (1 stud) = 0.333... meter, z axis 1 block = 0.5 meter

my first release (as soon as it's got ok from qc) will be the ip shuttle and will show you what is possible for a ffed3d model (anims, posl. thrusterpos.), i will keep it in asci format so you can check how it's done (for the anims and a quick loading process of the model you need to do some edits by hand).

anyway get ldraw and start to get familiar with it.
it's easy as 1,2,3.
model conventions/restrictions for ffed3d:
scale, like above described (with some exceptions, maybe i will do even smaller scaled models).
no "real" studs on the finished model, cause they "eat" up polys.
all models will be "oversized" by polycount (compared to ffed3d rule), anyway we will see how much the engine is capeable to handle.
don't overload the anim like i did for ip shuttle (it's just a howto, i have no idea how much it will slow down framerate, but it will).
keep the original size and shape as far as possible, on the other hand you will have full freedom, because it's possible to move everything even shape, but it will give me some extra work and i have no idea how it will work in the game (i.e. collision point), but we will find out.

if you're willing to convert/render them yourself, culling is allways ccw (two layers of transparent polys needet, for proper transparency). be aware that transparency only works correct if transparent model is separated from the rest, hierachy is accepted by ffed3d, but i'm still a little confused about this manner. you will have to experiment with that. hint: export then reimport requested transparent part as vrlm (only!) will help in blender, don't ask me why.

ip shuttle will be downloadable soon, i promise ;)

Question about Russian 3D FFE mod

Have their been any updates since FFED3D_1.0b? I've bookmarked the forum where they post, but I can't ready Russian. Thanks

oh yeah, I just saw the "b" and thought at a glance that was the latest version the OP listed but yeah, 1.12b is the latest, released around September last year I think.

Best to check out the SpaceSimCentral FFED3D forum for the latest info. An FFED3D package containing lots of new models was released last month.

It was released in November 2008 :(

The long hiatus has got me thinking this project has stalled and might even be dying. I hope I'm wrong but it's difficult to extract any answers from the Elite Russia forum because online translators seem to have a great deal of trouble converting from Russian to English (in an understandable form).

Certainly the number of new posts there has declined significantly and there haven't been any new ships or other objects for ages now.

Occasionally there are references to a new build but in other posts it's suggested that the main coder (DreamZzz) has insufficient time to devote to the project.

As I said earlier, I'd love to be proved wrong...

Hi Everyone

You definitely want to check this thread on FFED3D on SSC. When I posted this I put in every model/texture and music I could get my hands on into the package and I integrated it all into the mod manager that is included in the package.

Even if FFED3D is slowing down another project has appeared that some of you might be interested in here: http://www.spacesimcentral.com/pioneer-f35/

I dedicated a forum to it and it is open source :)

Iam not too worried by these quiet periods,we have seen them before and remember its not a full time job for any of the guys working on it.I also get the impression from the forum that the core group may have an updated version of the game with they have not released yet.

ah, september must just have been when the previous package was released over on spacesimcentral then. It hasnt been that long since we had new models, i.e. january, as for the program itself... well, as far as I see it there isnt much to be done.

I get the odd crash now and then, especially when entering a system on a photo mission, but thats not too big a deal since I can load up glffe and enter a system, then save. Their update is mainly a graphics overhaul, and in that respect their job is done. The old ship registrations appearing is a minor graphical annoyance I guess. Other problems, like HUD buttons not appearing seem to be video-card specific.

Just started the "Russian mod" I love it!
But, the videofiles in starports? Are there none, or is it the old ones that needs to be unpacked in the new russian mod or did I miss something else?

Sorry for any repeat question but, I just realised there are fifty-seven pages and Im lazy...

this project looks promising:), it'll certainly be interesting to see where it goes. All this modding and updating also just shows how much 'need' there is amongst the community for the next 'Elite' - it'll make a great change to killing boosters on COD!!

Hiya,

I've downloaded FFE D3D, the latest complete package, installed all patches and stuff .. but the game doesn't work properly. For example, all the cockpit icons (for communications, galactic chart and so on) seem to be missing.

Is there any information on how to configure the latest version of FFE D3D correctly? Is there anything I need besides the FFE D3D files?

Any help (or links to other related threads) including information would be great.

Thank you.

Have a look on the 1st page on the Original FFE3ED Page If I remember correctly its the screen res which causes the problem, you should be able to fix it.

Sorry, that wasn't what fixed it at all
I had to set the resolution to 1280x1024 in the cfg file and that got the icons back.
Other resolutions seem to make the icons disappear

Edit the ffewin.cfg
Change fullscreen to 1.
set fswidth and fsheight to your desired resolution (no wider than 16:10), e.g. try 1680 x 1050

Cry for help!!!

I am new to this so will profess my ignorance from the start (also I normally use a mac). I have found the Russian site with the FFE3D download. Downladed it and that is where my knowledge stops. Is it as simple as cliking on the FFE D3D.exe file and if so why do I keeping being told that BASS.dll is not found? Whatis this anyway???
