The FFED3D Thread

Thank you for your response.

I have read the tutorial and I understand the basics of what it is trying to teach me.
Good.

Can you, for example, make tight round around a space station (inside the ring), then come to a complete halt just before the docking bay without using anything, but "engines-off" mode?

And I HAVE persevered, I have a saved game just before an encounter ad I have played it dozens of times.

Most of the times I am DEAD within 5 seconds of coming out of fast forward.
That's pretty good, actually. When I first tried it it was 2-3s tops.

It was literally a "<s>Rocks fall</s> Alarms sound, everyone dies." scenario.

Now I generally can survive duking it out with the police above the spaceport (albeit unreliably). I fly an Asp.

Ok. I have one good tactical hint. The most important part is surviving the first attack run enemy craft make. To do so quickly rotate so that you're approximately facing the enemy, then thrust at full burn towards them and to the side - this means that you're moving off their line of fire, while at the same time you close distance forcing them to rotate faster until they eventually can't keep you in their sights and have to break off. By the time they break off you should be sitting cosily on their six, having cancelled your approach velocity using main thruster, and melting their butts off.

As for the equipment, I generally favour 5MW pulse or 30MW mining laser plus more than 8 shields - pulse lasers are lighter, doing more damage per ton, and don't force you to sit there keeping the enemy in your sight allowing for more freedom of movement in combat - if you're any less of a sharpshooter (especially when it comes to mining laser - this thing isn't generally considered a weapon for a reason) you'll do best fitting a 4MW beam instead, or even 1MW beam if you need more shields.
Those are loadout suggestions for Asp.

Is that people inside the cockpit? Love the new ships, though not quite sure about the Viper...it doesn't seem in keeping with the others. Is there an overview on the updates, or are they one-offs by individual?
Anyway, great to have new life in the game. Though when I play it, with everything else improved, I want the cities to look better.....never satisfied!

There have been a number of improvements made to the city buildings but I'm with you DrB; I want better cities :D

Potsmoke66 models

to satisfy your curiosity;
the vessels above (courier/trader, viper), are "standalone" models made by me. the viper is like the courier a model i started for a nfs4 mod (needforspace), as it comes i first released them for FFED3D. unless i put my models all together in a bundle, you have to download and install them separately, there are a few more ready until now, check SSC/FFED3D download section for more, i've allready made a replacement for the small buildings (it will be updated soon), my models usually are prefixed with P66, use "mod switcher" (in FFED3D bundle) to replace/switch models.
tip::cool:
you can use effect.fx on all models in FFED3D, maybe change a few expressions and get flat shadet buildings and floors, get rid of that heavy light color saturation, remove the heavy shading, re-enable the view-position related gloss of objects, which is more real i think, look at a cup from different angles, you will see the shading depends to light-direction but specularity relates to view-position (it's in fact reflected to all sides but you can only see directions aligned to view).

Dart256, what do you mean by "official", FFED3D its a wrapping software to run "Frontier First Encounters" on modern machines with a new grafx engine, that's all. you can build your own models and upload them, if you dare.

and yes i will give the viper the windows back.

modelling info?

ok!
first ;)
get a copy of "3dsmax" or "blender" install the requiered plugins to import/export models to the directx .x format

second
start creating, you can use any 3d modelling program the result must be a binary ".x" file (i prefer to use z-modeler for the primitives and raw models).
take the original models (splines) from _export folder as a reference to work with (enable model export in ffewin.cfg).
check the boards for modelling infos.

third :D
use, publish & share your models

i won't give a complete 3d modelling tutorial here, this would go to far
but if i'm in the mood i write one (for ffed3d specially of course)

battle advice

:( yes it's true, they allways surprise me, especially when they fire rockets at me from beginning, i'm dead within seconds, there's not much to go around this except; ;)
try several times, sometimes they line up different (in front of you, hurra),
try to fly wide parabels to your target (helps often to line up enemies),
try to approach not at full time acceleration (boring, i know),
if you got lined them up in front, attack not frontal (my decision), fly a parabel to your chosen target, then accelerate and attack from behind like a pro (learn to think 3dimensionally). fighters still are hard to catch, especially if you face 3 or more of them together (3 eagles 1mw kills you easier then a imperial courier 20mw). don't follow enemies to long or make shure youre alone. get yourself a naval ecm, it's essential.

 some suggest to turn off engines while getting attact, propably your'e harder to catch for the fighters cause they will have their acceleration aligned to your former value and fly to fast to point you (and to fast to point at for you too), i never do so, i feel helpless drifting like a stone in space

finally i didn't think jjffe or any other port of FFE is harder then the original game, i tried often to compare between and found no difference (but i'm not shure, do the rockets have 60g acceleration in FFE to? rediculous).

try to compare for yourself: read this
to use old FFE on XP via dos-box

It is very good that you are interested in this project. But to you need to learn a lot to do models for the official version. :)

 what do you mean by that exactly?
do you think i'm not close enough to original FFE design?
that my modelling skills are not good enough (won't mind)?
do i live in the wrong country or joining the wrong community?

as long as some people like my creations i don't give a damn about "official".
call me a punk or hippie whatever you like

hi arn, i recognized you must be one of the two "official" ship creators from elite-games, is that right?
i can't read russian, so things are hard to discover in your web-community and i already learned english and had to learn french (which i still don't understand), so i won't learn russian, so far.
it's not my fault that our forefathers diveded us not only by the tongue as well as by lettering and all that just because of religion.

keep it up

if you like here is a higher resolution of the above pic
and a short explanation to a final dead or you only live once; (i know this is not topic related stuff, but it's new year......) ;)
let's see what could be the advantage of life without paradise or whatever lot of people still believe in. personally i do believed a long time that there is a life after dead, but after a "long walk" i came to the conclusion that it might be better to believe that there is absolutely no life after dead,
why? first of all a life after dead gives you the perfect excuse for everything you've done in your life and so you're not responsible for your acting (is that right, remember i'm swiss). this has been abused by mankind to subpress others far too long!
then what is the difference? i think if we believe that our presence here on earth is unique, it makes each individual and us as a unique lifeform more precious. it requests a lot more responsability to our behave in community and requires more sensibilty with our life giving planet (only one i knew and we are members of the sole life on it).
personally i think we have to change a lot, not to get forgotten by time.
think, if mankind is gone there will be no one remembering us, and then even the dead has come to an end.

so please, keep it up and sorry if i spoiled you

Nope, we do it for one simple reason - "engines off" mode cuts off everything but manual overrides. Operating in "manual" (set speed) mode while both you and your enemies are hurtling at several thousand km/s relative to your onboard computer's chosen frame of reference is simply non-viable tactics, as, given that you won't measurably alter your velocity during combat it leaves you drifting inertly or thrusting at full burn from main and often one or more of your ventral/dorsal/lateral thrusters most of the time. This renders your ship uncontrollable and leads to "jousting", and complete inability to keep your target in your sights.

In "engines off" mode ship is fully controllable via manual overrides, which gives skilled commander full control over all aspects of flight and three (old style controls) to five (Jordanian controls) instantly accessible degrees of freedom, plus slightly less instant ability to adjust roll as well.

It helps if you pause the game the instant you get the enemy ship warning, then use the external view to look around and target your attackers. With a radar mapper you can see which ships are attacking you and therefore tell which are the fastest, and which are likely to be heavier armed.

To ensure you pause as soon as possible it may be a good idea to have your finger hovering over the ESC key, ready to pause. I actually use a program called AutoHotKey, to reassign keys and mouse buttons to different functions (I actually pause with my middle mouse button). I also use my favorite 1st-person shooter controls to control thrusters instead of the default numpad ones as they feel a bit awkward to me. I also wrote a little AutoHotKey script that checks for a warning message (a particular pixel turning red) and auto-pauses the game for me when detected.

When it comes to actually fighting, i find a good way to avoid instant death from missile or lasers is to fly perpendicular to your enemies to begin with. This stops them getting close enough to fire an instant death missile at you before you have time to react. If your ship is faster than the enemy's I think its a good idea to fly away from them, and switch to rear view. Then let them fire missiles at you and fly perdendicular to them (pausing and targeting the missiles helps). Believe it or not, missiles are actually very poor at reaching a ship as fast as an Eagle. They seem to have massive turning circles. You can just fly perpendicular to the missiles direction of travel and let them eventually burn out. Even a Saker can avoid missiles in this way, although you may need a bit more luck. :) This tactic gets a bit more tricky when you have 3 missiles after you though!

If you have a bigger, slower craft you should have a Naval ECM and shields. If you cant afford them, then maybe you upgraded too soon!

Btw, when starting a new game, I recommend switching from the Saker to the faster Eagle Mk2 which is waiting for you at the Turner Town port on Hope! That same port also has a guy willing to pay you 10,000 credits to take the stolen designs for a new federal weapon to Alioth! You can then go to Old Curie for the Wiccan race, and another 2K delivery mission to Alioth :D
