The FFED3D Thread

Torrent it and I will mirror it as well. I already have >30 times to ratio for seeding the 3rd torrent.
Heh, forgot about BitTorrent! I will check with Andy J and see if he's happy with that (due to report to him tonight with observations on his latest build) :)

Also you should update the first post so that all the patches, files and torrents are in one place.

New pictures there could entice more people in.

SSC is an option, except that last time I looked it was a bit clunky. Once you've uploaded something you can't remove it to replace it with a better version without getting admin to do it :(

Not anymore Steve. Darkone has heavily updated the site since the old days. I myself have changed a few files I uploaded. The only thing that still bugs me a little is the files I uploaded before the upgrade. Darkone backed them all up and re-uploaded them. Now I don't have access to change them anymore. No big deal as a forum upgrade is not a frequent thing.

Very cool Steve.
In all seriousness, I misunderstood how soon Andy's new build would be released. I hope he doesn't mind me saying he's a bit of a perfectionist, because bug fixing FFE is like playing Whack-A-Mole at the fairground

Well it's best to release it when he is happy with it. Just needs a bit of patience on our part and as we are all Elite fans, we know all about patience

Agreed - remember how long we waited for Elite 4 after it got originally announced in the late 1990s...? It only took over 15 years for even as much as gameplay footage (hidden in the background of David Braben's initial Kickstarter appeal video) to sneak out. I'm sure we can wait a few days or weeks for Andy's latest build.

I can promise that it won't be another 15 years ... soon, very soon ;)

Really sorry for the delay, it's at least a week later than I'd intended, but I've had to add a cache manager for the models to try and keep a lid on resources. The original will do a Mr Creosote and just eat all that it can, ignoring any tummy grumbles, until it finally explodes in a big sticky mess!
"And finally ... a wafer-thin mint... Oh... It's only a tiny little thin one... voila... bon appetite!" Splat!

The other plus is that whilst fixing that, I've also found a significant per-frame resource leak that originates from the original sources, as well as the cause of the mouse pointer jumping up to the top left corner all the while in full screen and right-clicking.

It's a fair way closer, but I'm sure - still a fair way from perfection yet Steve, lol :p
I'll have to try sort the full-screen / switching issues next, but think I'm happy now with my testing for a v1.01.

The cache manager and new features are configurable so hopefully everyone will be able find a sweet spot for it to run fine!
Going to let Steve throw a few FFE galaxies and months at it first though, and if I get the nod then I'll let it loose! :D

I think this post needs more smilies!

Appreciate all the hard work you do Andy, I'll still play FFE even when ED is released thanks to you guys. :D :D :D

Couple of extra smilies, :D :D :D :D

FFED3DAJ patch v1.01 is finally out and can be found over at SCC and the Russian Elite-Games forum :)

There is unfortunately an issue reported with the Anisotropic mod switching your ship, but I've had some detailed feedback on this already and can now easily reproduce the issue. Looks like it's possibly only happening at the the change of a day in the Sol system and it's a really funky one - you can be happily docked, then find yourself in a totally different ship and floating a few light years out in space!
I think I have a likely culprit for this; the FFED3D guys switched out some ship AI/generation routines in this mod by the looks of things and are most likely overwriting ship pointers. I'm just going to remove any calls to their code and try to get it back to the 'standard' anisotropic 0.9c code - which should be much easier now that I've finally found some to compare against!

It doesn't affect the standard FFE game play anyway, so I didn't want to hold the patch back for any longer. Hopefully I can unwind their changes to the mod and will just re-issue a v1.01a patch zip in a few days time for anyone who wants to plays that one.
