Hey - just wondering. Did you make any progress with this?

I've been trying to find other ways of creating compatible models (like exporting buildings from Google Sketchup), but it seems the Pandasoft export for 3DSMax is the only way to do it.
This is probably more of an 'information for the masses' rather than a specific answer - but in case anyone is able to pick up and run with this:

If you create an _export folder within the Models folder of FFED3D and then either set modelexport=1 in the .cfg, or press CTRL+F9 at an appropriate time, the game will then start dumping out the models it displays into that folder. You can use those as a reference.

The folders already in the Models directory are either the base models or those which have already been upgraded - they're in legacy DirectX9 format - the model.X file is its meshes/animations, and there's typically a skin.tga or skin.png to texture it.

I think that fragMOTION can open/edit them (freeware/shareware) but probably as nanite2000 has suggested, you'll need something professional level like 3DS Max.
This page here might be helpful to those more clued up and capable in this area than I am... I'd welcome a beginners guide if anyone knows one 'out there' that's relevant or can explain to a numpty how to go about editing/skinning :D
If someone can figure out how to unwrap the faces of model 314 / edit it so that a texture can be added via a skin.png/tga, then I might be able to sort out the solid white rings around planets! (I have the single pixel rings drawn from primitive shapes colouring correctly now but as yet haven't solved models rendering 'white' due to them having no skin)

For want-to-be model editors, there's a pretty useful list of what makes up the FFE universe here if you want to target something specific.

Same seeding Beta 1 and Beta 2.

Thanks everyone, finally got it, will keep seeding at least for a few days (I dont usually use torrent clients) But if anyone needs it will be happy to seed on request, or ftp.

The extra seeders really kicked in, thanks again!

Now, how do I get it running :S

Thanx everyone im seeding too now and I will keep my eye on the thread for future seeding requests.

For now its all working within acceptable parameters :)

Sure but I would need Ittiz's permission first.

I'll drop him a PM and ask if he is ok with it.
Beta 2 gives many people severe lag.

Can't see why he wouldn't be and it would make it a lot easier to download

I'm hoping Ittiz is working on Beta 3 because it sounds like Beta 2 isn't good for many people :(

I'm working on it. The more bugs you get the harder ones that are left. Right now I'm working on lighting. It'd be nice if people would make replacement models for all the surface buildings and what not. Their lighting is controlled inside the assembly, and they just look bad.

It sure would. I'm just waiting on his response.

I humbly suggested Ittiz himself may want to do the honours. If I uploaded it, the only way I could credit Ittiz is the description and by creating a readmefirst.txt file in the archive both saying it is Ittiz's version and putting in a link to this thread.

I would therefore prefer Ittiz did the honours as anything necessary could be added etc.

The only exporter that makes FFED3D compatible Direct X models is Pandasoft (http://www.andytather.co.uk/panda/directxmax.aspx).

And this is only available for 3DS Max.

If anybody knows *anyone* with a copy of 3DS Max, and a basic knowledge of 3D modelling, then it should be possible to replace all the buildings.

(I had an idea of using buildings/models from Google's 3D Warehouse, but couldn't do it without 3DS Max or Pandasoft.)

:(

People can upload it to SSC if they'd like.

It's been mentioned quite a bit that people have been having issues with beta 2. Is it mostly that it runs slow?

For me the issue was frame rate yes.....it staggered severely on my i7. It felt like 2-3 frames per second.

Same here. The frame rate was so low - even after adjusting the cfg file - that the game was pretty much unplayable. And that was on the occasions when it didn't crash :(
As such, it was difficult to explore the game to see how everything else was running.
Looking forward to beta 3 though :)

Wow, my computer is an old core2 duo and I get about that. Through optimizations and adjusting settings I've manage to get it up to about 14 fps so far. I'm thinking of switching to some of the newer vector libraries, which may get a further increase in speed. Unfortunately the low frame rate is CPU limited and not GPU limited since it takes tons of CPU to make all the calculations for the planet vectors.
