The FFED3D Thread

Classified missions have much lower requirements, but still give you a nuke - for satellite destruction, quite fittingly.

There was me thinking I'd have to go back to an old game and reload. But then when you get Argent's Quest you lose your ship and everything in it. So really I just need to find me a mission before I set off for Pleione, don't I? :p

(Though I hate taking a mission if I know I'm not going to bother completing it!) ;)

Yes, I'm afraid you need to take a mission with no intention of completing it

:0)

Before i start, .. HELLO! ..
Ive been coming to this site and reading the forums for ages but not actually
signed up ... Im just a typical 38yr old bloke who loved Elite and Frontier and
wondering and hoping Elite 4 comes out soon...

But, Heres my question ...

Ive just downloaded the FFED3D_1.0b remake of frontier,. but is it me or isnt the same ..
im sure u started in Lave .? and i dont recodnise the system im in .?
And, is there a Stupid guide too as its been about 15yrs since ive played Frontier and
i cant remember what to do..? :0/

Cheers ..

You started in Lave in the original Elite.

In Frontier First Encounters, you started in Gateway. The FFE3D project is a modded version of First Encounters.

Eh, just post any questions you may have here.
Some of us have too much time on their hands :D (but please, do try to type more grammatically).

You started in Lave in the original Elite.

In Frontier First Encounters, you started in Gateway. The FFE3D project is a modded version of First Encounters.
And in FE2 you could choose between starting in Ross 154, Sol and Lave.
As a matter of fact you still can in FFE (by pressing 1, 2 and 3), but it'd be somewhat counter-productive, given that it'd dump you far from Gateway, where first of the hand-coded missions starts right away, and which is near the place where the second one takes place.

Wow, it's like looking in a mirror!! :D

I think you'll like FFED3D, but if you're coming from a primarily Elite 2: Frontier (FE2) background, and never really played Frontier First Encounters (FFE), then you might find it quite difficult. I played Frontier a lot, and liked to think I could handle myself in a battle, regardless of what I was in and what was attacking me. But that was because the attackers weren't usually that accurate.

That's not the case in FFED3D...they're a good shot, so expect to die a lot. And expect to die almost instantly on many occasions if you come out of Stardreamer with a big Imperial Explorer on your tail and unloading his Large Plasma Accelerator at you.

Stick with it though, and it's great. I'm sort of getting to the end of my initial sojourn into the game, and am living the high life in my Thargoid Battle Ship with 999 shields and 150 million credits, but I've hardly done any of the missions, so I think I might start again. ;)

HI Mozzy, welcome to the forum.

Again looking in a mirror (37 in my case)

Have a good look around the forum, theres loads of answers on here, and I've found things out about the games I never knew.

This, although I'd probably stick with high-res JJFFE (not GL), or even ordinary JJFFE.

D3DFFE is shaping up to become something grand, but it's still unfinished and full of stuff that bothers me and hampers the gameplay (like problems with rendering asteroid surfaces).

Also, FFE *can* be "no way I can do that" hard for the beginner - catch!

I sold mine rather quickly and bought an Asp - even standard Thargoid ship (once it's capacity returns to base value) is almost a cheat.

The only thing I miss is class 4 MD - my Asp would truly be an explorer with this baby on board.

Totally agree, The Class 4 Military Drive is great fun, especially if your being chased, no way they're going to have the same range as you!

How so? When I saved and reloaded after first getting the ship, the cargo space returned to around 170 tons.

I know what you mean, but in actuality would you really do much exploring? Are there systems out there, thousands of light years away, that have anything in them?

(Made me wonder what would happen, (and even if it would be possible), to get to Polaris, or even Miacke, before the Mycoid missions. Would they be out there?!)

It's still very manoeuvrable, has decent capacity and mind-numbingly powerful laser.

Probably not anything terribly interesting, but there are bound to be some fairly interesting sights nevertheless.

Is starting in Lave really such a big deal? If so, fill up on fuel and immediately hyperspace there. It's about 3 or 4 squares left and 7 or 8 squares down from Gatweway. It's a backwater though.

In Frontier you start off in Sol.

No, there has been no official word. There are reports that it will be worked on after The Outsider, but i wouldn't call that definite.

What I would recommend is downloading the standard FFE and giving it a go for a while. Then download the FFED3D. Your save games from the first version will work fine, and you'll be blown away at the improved graphics. ;)

Fix'd. There is really no point in trying normal FFE, when it still retains outrageous bugs (IIRC, relative velocities are not recalculated in basic FFE which makes the ship abruptly change it's effective velocity for no reason while travelling), doesn't run on modern machines natively or in DOSBox, and lacks Jordanian controls.

JJFFE, or Hi-Res JJFFE is the way to go if you want true-to-original experience.

:(

Dunno whats wrong with me .. Tried a few differant frontiers but i cant seem to get into it ...
15 years ago i was addicted, it was like .. work, frontier, tea, frontier, work, frontier, tea, frontier ... ect ..

Dunno if its just im used to todays flashy graphics, Or todays style of fullon gameplay.
or, just the 15 yrs of hype in my head meant i was expecting something better ...

Elit4 couldnt come any faster ..
Sometimes i wish someone would say it wasnt coming out ..
Its better than this carrot dangling ..

Did you ever do the storyline missions in FFE? I did a few back in the old days, but never the lot, and never the final missions (Turner's quest/thargoid ships).

More recently, i came back to it and found i didn't have quite the same passion for the freeform game as before, but i tried to complete all of the storyline missions. This added a new element, and got me addicted again for a bit.

Maybe you could try that if you haven't already.

Well, Frontiers are sandbox games, so it's really up to you what you'll do.

Grinding for cash is, unsurprisingly, mind-numbingly boring activity, so I'd advise for doing something more interesting, like:

-doing storyline missions
-performing recon/bombings for military (especially with relatively small and agile ship)
-fooling around with physics and visiting all kinds of weird places
-flying in dangerous systems and not reloading just because someone cooked your autopilot, or stripped half of the thrusters off your hull.

I know what you mean Mozzy, I used to be able to spend days just doing nothing inparticular in these games, but now I need an incentive. Having recently completed the final missions and getting a pretty much indesctructable ship, I've taken to piracy and murder in an attempt to simply increase my kill-ratings. But after a few hours of attacking space stations, polishing off the 40 or 50 Police Vipers that come to get me, paying my fines and moving on, it's actually quite boring. Even starting from scratch to work my way through the storyline missions wasn't that appealing.

I guess I've been playing it a lot for the last few months, and I've simply had my fill. Perhaps I'll go back to something else.
