The Formidine Rift - Part 2

I'm heading out to the Heart & Soul Nebula area tomorrow so I'll probably join in with this, I'll try to resist scanning everything until I get there though. I'm making just about 36 Ly max on this build.

I would suggest ditching the guns, a couple of launchers and downgrading the shield to D in favour of adding a supplementary fuel tank. No need to worry about chains of unscoopable stars!

CURSE YOU FDL JUMP RANGE! All I wanted was to go to Maia... But nOOO. Well fine. If you're going to be like that you can get left behind...

Whelp, I'm gonna take a break from RES hunting in my FDL, and grab a Cobra to see what this "meta-alloys" business is all about (I also think that having UA resistant cargo bays would make it easier to transport them out to the rift... Perhaps this is important.) ... Anyone got any tips on where/how to locate barnacles once you have chosen a suitable planet? (Low G yes? I haven't really been paying attention to this whole thing very much...)

I'm so excited!! Drew has repped my post #321!
Maybe I missed it, but this clue of Drew's seems relevant. Posted in the old thread as #660. Could be worth adding to the summary in the first post:

All the of Galnet articles about Lady Kahina were written by me. She has been on a series of exploration trips in the last nine months or so, but they may come to an end before long, so keep an eye out for her return. That may provide further insight.

In terms of the Rift itself, do bear in mind that this story was finalised in the gamma phase of the game. As I mentioned before, it does not require Horizons and you do not need to have read my book to take part (Though reading the story may help with the immersion, the clues from the book are all available on-line in these forums now).

From what I can see though, some basic assumptions about the characters involved have been made, which you may wish to reconsider. Remember I am primarily a 'character' writer, I like twists and misdirection.

Right on, Commanders.

Drew.

So far, we haven't really taken into account the red part of the hint yet. Maybe the woman in the holofac isn't telling the (whole) truth or something like that?

Untitled.jpg

We need to take what the old woman said (or what some other character did) with a grain of salt. Maybe she wants to protect what is out there / or protect us from it by steering us in a wrong direction? I don't know the book so I can't say if that makes any sense.

I just wanted to put a quick seed of a thought. Didn't the lore speak of a "dark planet"? has anyone considered looking at Dwarf Star systems? These systems in my opinion would fit the bill of a "dark planet". The dwarfs would still produce a very high level of radiation that could potentially create an Earth-like with a close enough orbit, thick enough atmosphere and a strong magnetic field (not tidally locked?). The dwarf star would provide the heat to provide life to a planet but would not provide light to the planet, hence a "dark planet". Also these are some of the LEAST explored stars in the solar system. Easily overlooked for the fact that they typically do not have anything interesting in them but in the latest exploration video from FD they stated that an Earth-like can appear in any system despite the unlikeliness of it. It may be unlikely but not impossible.

Seems to fit the bill in my opinion.

One last thought..is it not supposed to be "beyond the rift"? thats a lot of brown dwarfs to potentially look through....which will easily be dismissed by a large group.

_____________edit__________

it would also be a good way for FD to get players to explore areas that usually don't get explored

If you want "dark planets" then I suggest you look for systems that have no suns, but rather black holes as the main "star"

They are reasonably easy to find, as they weirdly produce the same soft glow on the galmap as type O stars. Though they are very rare. They won't appear on the star class map, but rather as black dots on the realistic map.

All planets in one of these systems will be utterly black. And be careful in these systems. It is very easy to run into the wrong thing... There might be a black hole between you and a planet. You won't have any visual reference.

Switch lights on, and pay careful attention to the surface scanner when landing.

Good luck!

Wow - this thing is really gaining some momentum now!
It makes me want to go and pull my Asp out of its garage and head out to the rift... again! :D

Is there a reasonably well known example of a system name?

Salomé and Kahina are most definitely the same person this has been confirmed in the Children of Raxxla story by Alessia Verdi.

You don't need 3rd party stories for this confirmation:

*SPOILER WARNING*

Salome is the name given to Kahina by one of Reclamation's other major characters, Hassan after she suffers a partial memory loss and does not remember her own name. It is the name of his sisters cat.

She didn't say a lot in the book. It was basically that something scary was out there, that the authorities had erased her memory when she got back from the trip, and the coordinates (which we don't have). Even if she gave us the "right" direction the rift is sufficiently large that it's like trying to find a particular sand grain on a beach, ie. pretty much hopeless without further guidance :)

I travel first to Rho Cassiopeia

You will do well to get to Rho Cassiopeia. I doubt it will have been visited as yet. I'm not convinced you could get there even with jump range boosts. And if you can get there with them, you will of course need as many again to get back again.

As an aside I am listening to Reclamation again. Probing for clues.

The more time I spend out here, the more I realize we have no chance to find "IT" by merely good luck or brute force... The area to search is huge, spanning thousands of light years in several directions. Also, the more I think about it, the more I believe that the RR-line is just a pointer to the general area, and not something to take literal. Also, what we are looking for is probably behind the rift and not in it, although this point is of course up for discussion.

What I'm certain is that we are following mostly blind leads, and we need to concentrate only on those that we have received from the game. Leads from the book and other places can help to understand the ones in game though...

The leads we have from game are Salomé/Kahina, and the etymology of the names. We also have her trip. We have as well the Seven Veils. We should concentrate on these...

We have already good background information on the names, although we might have to review them just as Vihear's post says. But the Seven Veils... What could be understood as veils, gates, or pieces of clothing in the map? Nebulas? Dark regions? POI's???

By the way, a post of mine got repped by Drew a week or so as well. I did not give it too much importance as I thought it might just be for the political take on the story, but I'll post it here in case someone can make a connection:

Althoug I really loved the book, it certainly didn't give me any respect for the Loren family or the Empire in general. In the case of ED, I'd say it was Kahina's dynasty that invaded the Berbers, and not the other way around. In this case, I'd see the Berbers as the ones trying to free their land from the oppressing Loren dynasty.

Interesting connection nevertheless. I do wonder if the Hasan from the Berbers does indeed have anything to do with Hassan from Reclamation, as they were enemies in the north African stories, but allies in Reclamation.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading these threads with interest and I'm going to turn my ship around and join in the search. The discussion has recently turned toward misdirection. Has anyone considered that while the Formidine rift might be where we think it is, perhaps the mystery is in the opposite direction i.e reverse the line, watch our sixes?

\tinfoil mode on
What about applying the "watch your six" phrase to the directional pointer "RR line"? Pretty sure this has been touched upon in the original thread, but not sure what the outcome was. What if we follow the RR line in the other direction, where does that take us? (Am not going to be online for another couple of days, Easter / family duties), but maybe someone else is and can quickly check. Surely this will not lead corewards (as in "CORE of the problem")?

\tinfoil mode off

Any dice?

Edit: Ha! Ninja'd by Snake Plissken. How appropriate!

Interesting that you had the same thought exactly at the same time!!!

But seriously, it would be really mean if that were the case...

On the matter of the location of the Formidine Rift, though: I think the location has been confirmed.

I do not think it is IN the rift either the story says crosses the rift,no?

The old woman says that she "got as far as" the rift and that "nobody has been to the other side" and came back alive. To me this suggests within the rift, not across it. But that could be a mistaken assumption

Death by Ken Bruce!

Well this is embarrassing!

Just made it out to the start of the rift after several nights of flying. Great :D got a bank holiday weekend to spend searching the place. Not got any jumponium though so maybe I should land and do some scouting.

First planet no dice - just standard stuff and some chromium. So I'm heading to the next landable when pop master comes on the radio. Ironically Curiosity Killed The Cat's song Straight Back Down To Earth is playing and I'm sat smugly congratulating myself as the Conda heads down to land because I knew the answer.

But the surface is coming up fast, too fast and as I desperately thrust up I realise this planet is way bigger than the last one. Too late, too late, shields offline and I'm back at the re-buy screen.

So now I'm sat at Diaguandri contemplating the relative insurance cost of Anaconda vs Asp.

What a massive idiot.

I'm really sorry for your loss, of time, credits, light years, and frustration. +rep though for a post that made me laugh despite the seriousness of the situation, and for taking your loss with a lot of decency!

And no need to be embarrassed. Has happened to most of us...
