Nice job!
Oxford dictionaries definition of " Etymology" : The study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history. So how has the meaning of "Kahina" changed?

Edit: Just a thought, but I suspect Drew (in particular) is very precise about his phrasing; it may be a good idea to second check the exact wording of each of each of the clues, and putting in the url to the original instance.

When I get a chance, I'll compile the clues he has posted with his phrasing. That might help clear some things up. Only 65 pages to dig through :)

Excellent summary.

Just one point. If this is to become the current main thread I'd contact a moderator - sure I saw some in the old thread.

This is a bit different to the CG/UA threads as the OP of the first thread wasn't maintaining the first page but it would make sense to get a mod try and contact the OP and make sure it's OK to lock that thread with a pointer to this one. Just stops duplicates all over the place. If you've not already done that.

Good luck :)

EDIT - Although thinking about it they didn't close down the thread when Fennster stopped doing the CG one so they may be OK with some duplication.

Good work on this thread. I'd been following the old one but it needed compiling.

I'm ready to follow. We now need a leader. Or two!

Questions that each of us seeking what's in or beyond the Rift should ask ourselves before we set out: what is it we are really looking for and what will we do if we find it?
.
From what I've read, Salome took a combat/explorer - rigged Clipper on her search: she was prepared for trouble. That does not necessarily mean she was looking to start trouble, only that she felt she might need to defend herself. The Clipper is also a very fast ship - she would have a better chance of escaping, if she needed to, in that ship than in, say, an Asp Explorer or Diamondback Explorer.
.
I think the mention of octagonal ships certainly suggests a Thargoid presence somewhere out there, however what would be the consequences of actually finding them? There may not have been any official contact with them for some time but that does not mean they do not have a more local presence to keep us under surveillance (those who have read Mostly Harmless will know what I mean here). A lone base outside of a permit-locked region would be very difficult for anyone to find by chance and I do not think there are enough clues laid out here to lead us to such a place directly - there must be some other clue in-game, or perhaps a trail of clues that need to be found and followed.
.
For my part, the answer to the question is simply that the human race is at a strategic disadvantage if we do not have any knowledge of the origin of the Thargoids or at least whereabouts they are actively operating in the Milky Way. Finding a base would be an opportunity to re-open contact on more equal terms, even if both civilisations would rather keep their distance for now. There is also the possibility that there might be another civilisation out there waiting to be discovered, something non-Thargoid in origin (either alien, AI, or 'Missing' human outposts), and we won't know unless we look...

Don't worry; it's the problem-solving process that gives the fun! I suspect when actually found the solution might be a let-down. I think Drew got a bit of flack when some people objected to the ROT13 clues he gave in some posts a while ago- but he was actually stimulating a lot of interesting problem-solving & got people thinking.

Heh, well I'll try to pitch in. I've been poking around the margins, mostly false leads.

For instance on the etymology of Al-Kahina (the preistess). The root of the word is Kahin, arabic for priest which is in turn from Kohen, Hebrew for priest. which is where the modern surname Cohen comes from. Interesting, and something I didn't know before but not immediately obvious how that's the least bit useful.

For a bit I decided it was more along the lines of Al-Kahina meant the diviner, and the most famous diviner was the Oracle at Delphi named after Apollo's appearance as a dolphin, so maybe the constellation Delphinus is of interest ... look, look, nope, at least not obviously.

The problem with this sort of clue is it's obvious in retrospect but has a nearly unbounded set of false leads.

Once I scrounge the credits together to pull off a proper exploration run then I'll head out that way. It says a line, so there's something on that axis that's to be found.
Maybe Thargoids are in the game?
Maybe it's a new intelligent species that's even more horrifying?
Or maybe it tens of billions of credits worth of exploration data?
We may never know... (slow fade out)

Exactly. There needs to be steps in between "we don't know what we're looking for" and "we found it". Multiple steps. Not just hints to what we should be looking for, but signs that we're on the right track or not. Signs that ramp up the closer we get.

Grats for the new thread. I've been following the old one cause I want to get involved too, so here are my thoughts :

I've been pondering over the few clues we are given in regard to a humongous area of mostly uncharted territory. Somewhere out there, there's some content that Frontier and Drew Wagar want us to find. Furthermore, Drew's signature - that he explicitly includes in most of his posts -, matches the last line of the video's narration in Elite: Reclamation. If we're supposed to work out some coordinates out of it, the only way to do that is by converting the letters to actual numbers.

Goodluck, and ... right on, Commander

right : 18,9,7,8,20 : sum = 62

on : 15,14 : sum = 29

Commander : 3,15,13,13,1,14,4,4,18 : sum = 85

It doesn't seem much, at least not when using standard math. However, there's another way of doing calculations these days, the common core math approach (I personally stink at it). Maybe breaking apart the digits before doing the addition, gives you the fixed coordinates for the X, Y & Z axis.

Could it be that a mathematical problem solved using core math, is the answer to our big question ?

Do we know how many commanders are heading for the rift, and who are already there? Did you all pack a punch?

I'm out there. Arjin was, but I think he had a mishap. I've met 3 or 4 others who are out there or have been recently. I haven't been on much, just haven't had a lot of time but should be back on regularly in a few days.

I do think a group effort is needed, though. So if anyone adds me in game, I'll accept next time I'm on. The more eyes we have in the Rift, the better :)

Ok. I am considering arming up an Anaconda while keeping some jump distance and head out. Just wondering if you guys brought any weapons at all.

Hi, sorry for my terrible english and sorry if someone already submitted this hypothesis.

I thought initially explore the outer arm, and then I saw this thread (or rather the first). I read everything I could and I've probably forgotten things by reading other, but one thing is going to blow my brain since two days. Prepare your tinfoil.

This:
The video played.
'If you're listening to this it means you're smart enough to have bypassed Galcop, Federation and Imperial security.' The woman on the video smiled. 'Not bad, but it's nothing compared to what's coming. I'm guessing you'll be pressed for time so I'll be quick. You'll find the coordinates at the end of this message. You'll need a tough ship and a good pilot. It's a long way, so make sure you're prepped, no one will be around to help you out. Once you reach the rift you're going to have to plot a way across. There are no stars for dozens of light years and the dark systems haven't been mapped, so take your time, watch your six'. The woman leaned in closer to the recording device. 'What's there? Wish I could tell you, but they edited my memory pretty good, took me long enough to stitch this lot back together. Whatever it is, it's something that Galcop, the Imps and the Feds don't want us to see. Good luck, and ... right on, Commander.'
The holofac faded, leaving them just the text.

Obviously there is no coordinate at the end, but in this thread i learned that Drew used this .,.. ......,. ... cryptic code.
The last sentence is "Good luck, and... right on, commander." I know some people think there is a clue, but i don't know if someone noticed that if we only keep the punctuation we get this: ",...,. "
Using Unary code we get ",3,1" the first number is missing, so it can be 0 or the 6 of "watch your six" or something related to "Good luck".
I unsuccessfully tried to convert 0,3,1 in something else, but i'm clearly not the most competent person for this stuff.

6,3,1 or 31 could possibly be the galactic plane it is located on. That's a decent tin-foil lead right there :)

Ok, going to break this down as simply as I can so other more smart CMDR's can correct any flaws in my logic. There are two major goals for this mystery and for ease of posting and reference they will be known as The System and The It.

The System:
Best case scenario, this is named system either in the Rift, edge of the galactic arm or beyond. If named it will make it a little easier in the search process.
Worst case, The It has been seeded along with a procedural system, lets really hope this is not the case.

The It:
Based on lore and all the warning it is safe to assume it is of alien origin and possibly dangerous.

#1. Find The System, for without The System, The It won't exist.
#2. Find The It.

How do we accomplish these two goals?

1. Isolate the search grid as much as possible by utilizing the clues provided thus far. Keep hammering those clues, pay attention to Galnet etc..
2. Patience and due diligence while searching, otherwise known as smart searching, check for signals, anomalies, anything that may be out of the norm. We can assume that given ED's game mechanics The It will reveal itself via a signal of some sort (because that's how Fdev does things) while cruising around in SC.
3.Communicate correlate and share any and all ideas, potential discoveries.
4. Somebody pay off Drew in large sums of money....JK.

Ok so I have really been hammering the "CMDRS should consider the ahem core of the problem" clue To me this has nothing to do with the core of the galaxy for this specific mystery here's why.

In keeping with the relevant context Drew was replying to one very specific question, and one general musings.

Question, the question is, do you consider the "Edge of the Galactic Arm" to be the Rim of the galaxy? or just the end of that particular spiral... *speculation abound*...
Musing, Yeah, might not be the Nebula(though still worth the trip), could be a particular star.
Could be anything that the needle points to
It could have moved.......
I can see this being what our Cmdrs discuss over some zero g coffee

The question is relevant as it is directly taken from the old lady. So there are two problems, where to look, and what to look for, since we know we have to look for a special system first, we can put aside what to look for in the meantime.

Where to look, Rift area, RR line, edges of the arms, edge of the galactic arm and beyond, there is only one common theme here while exploring all of this, it's jump range as the stars thin out. What is central to exploration next to scanning? FSD jump range, the "core" could mean core of the ship, the FSD, because the problem of exploring the rift or beyond the edge requires good jump ranges and Drew mentioned that the Engineers may make it easier. What else would make it easier? A deep space scanner? probably not Given Fdev's linear approach to things, this can only mean another boost to FSD's as in more jump range making it easier, couple this with jumponium and now were really getting around.

The word core was specifically used to trip up players ,as the author does indeed love twists, turns and clever nebulousness. ;)

I try to keep in mind that without The System there is no instance and nothing to find, and so far everything is found via the various signals, although an a alien ship cruising around will most likely look like the flying mini comets that regular ships do while flying around in SC so I keep an eye on the contacts page in every system as well.
