The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Many people have went searching for this mystery, yet none have found an answer. This is a continuation of the previous thread found HERE . Most of this information has been found by a number of other people and I take no credit for their genius :)

What is the Formidine Rift?
From what we know, it is an area of space located between the Outer Perseus Arm and the New Galactic Arm. This general area has not been confirmed, but is accepted as the general location.
Thanks to Erimus, we have a couple of lovely pictures :) Hope you don't mind, but I linked to your images. Galactic Maps by Erimus

Drew Wagar created this area of space and entered it into Elite Lore with his Book, Elite: Reclamation. In the book, the Protagonist, Salomè/Kahina meets an Old Lady who, for a lack of better words, seems a bit luny. This old lady tells her;

"Don't tell no one, but I got as far as the Formidine Rift, not many folks can say that! No one has gone past it and lived to tell the tale."

"Edge of the Galactic Arm. Take a line from Reorte to Riedquat to the edge of the arm and ... keep going. 'Stars thin out, you can see the whole galaxy just hanging there."
"Let's just say there was some serious sh** out there, stuff you wouldn't believe. No really - no one believed me, said it was all a fabrication. I had no proof you see and they edited my memory afterwards. Ah, it'll all come back to bite them one day, it's all there in the imperial databanks somewhere - and they thought the Thargoids were trouble ..."

Later in the book, we are told more about this so called Rift.
The video played.
"If you're listening to this it means your smart enough to have bypassed Galcop, Federation, and Imperial security." The woman on the video smiled. "Not bad, but it's nothing compared to what's coming. I'm guessing you'll be pressed for time so I'll be quick. You'll find the co-ordinates at the end of this message. You'll need a tough ship and a good pilot. It's a long way, so make sure you're prepped, no one will be around to help you out. Once you reach the rift you're going to have to plot a way across. There are no stars for dozens of light years and the dark systems haven't been mapped, so take your time, watch your six." The woman leaned in closer to the recording device. "What's there? Wish I could tell you, but they edited my memory pretty good, took me long enough to stitch this lot back together. Whatever it is, it's something that Galcop, the Imps and the Feds don't want us to see. Good luck, and ... right on, Commander." The holofac faded, leaving them with just the text.

John Harper, author of And Here The Wheel, wrote in a Kickstarter comment(Discovered by Acaelus Thorn. I have yet to read And Here The Wheel);
"You don't know what I've seen. I've sailed beyond the Formidine Rift, seen the fleets of Octagonal ships blocking out the stars. I've stood on lost worlds, sterilised clean by the Thargoids and erased from humanity's maps. I've seen the graves from the Thargoid wars, countless headstones stretching beyond the curvature of the horizon, little spots of reflected light dottering the abandoned continent ..."

At first glance, most would think "Oh, it's just an area of space." However, Drew has confirmed that there is something there to be found in game, we just don't know what. Hence, the mystery and the continued search.
Comments from Drew on Twitter;
3/3/16:#FormidineRift. 1: Yes, it's in #Elitedangerous to be found. 2. You do not need Horizons. 3. Whether it's found depends on who goes looking. (We know that it is not rank locked as well, so his meaning of "Depends on who goes looking" could mean many things.)
3/7/16: @SystemSoundTM Well, the secret of the Formidine Rift is out there to be found, more about it may be revealed this year, if all goes well...

The Clues We Have

The Reorte to Riedquat line from Reclamation. It may not point to anything directly, but this is our reference point.

Riedquat

"Formidine" has been translated as "fear/dread", Drew confirms and says a clue. He also tells us to look into the Etymology of Kahina. The meaning of the name Kahina is derived from Arabic;
الكاهِنة (al-Kahinah) meaning "the diviner, the fortuneteller". This was a title applied to the 7th-century Berber queen Dihya, who resisted the Arab expansion into North Africa.

Drew tells us "CMDRs may wish to consider the, ahem, core of the problem."- Here

The mystery of the Formidine Rift as described by the clues in my story, Elite: Reclamation :

1. It is there to be found in game in ED.
2. You do not need 'Horizons' to find it as it was finalised long before 'Horizons'.
3. Whether it is found or not depends entirely on who goes looking.

#186
The Engineers expansion may make it easier, but it's been possible since launch back in 2014.

#192
It's not locked to a rank. All you need is wanderlust, patience and an ability to read between the lines.

As for the ship at the end of Elite: Reclamation it was actually an Imperial Clipper, though it's called a Courier in the story. You can find out why on my FAQ page > http://www.drewwagar.com/elite-dange...e-reclamation/

#660 - (Thanks for pointing this out, Vihear)All the of Galnet articles about Lady Kahina were written by me. She has been on a series of exploration trips in the last nine months or so, but they may come to an end before long, so keep an eye out for her return. That may provide further insight.

In terms of the Rift itself, do bear in mind that this story was finalised in the gamma phase of the game. As I mentioned before, it does not require Horizons and you do not need to have read my book to take part (Though reading the story may help with the immersion, the clues from the book are all available on-line in these forums now).

From what I can see though, some basic assumptions about the characters involved have been made, which you may wish to reconsider. Remember I am primarily a 'character' writer, I like twists and misdirection.

Right on, Commanders.

Drew.

This is indeed correct though the group (Children of Raxxla) is genuinely in game as minor faction. Sorry, I hadn't spotted that comment about the logo. Kahina's story was halted last year due to 'issues' with the way Galnet was being edited and sequenced. Those have since been resolved and thus the story continues. Clues as to the Rift itself are in-game and in-book, along with all the other ED storylines. There might be hints on social media/forum/reddit etc, but you should focus resources on Galnet, In game and In book as 'canon' to the story. If it hasn't happened there, I would say it hasn't happened. Fan-fiction, regardless of quality, is not canon, and that includes my own stories prior to ED.

My website articles should be treated as 'summaries' of the canon for convenience, there are no direct 'clues' continued therein. These articles were written to make us much background lore available as possible within the restrictions of my NDA. Thus any info there is already available somewhere else - hopefully I've just made it more accessible.

Great summary, thanks CMDR! I've been heading there for a few evenings, I'm planning to stop by the Bubble nebula for funsies and then powering across the bridge to see what's out there. Interesting stuff, possibly the most interesting bit of Elite lore I've read actually, I hope someone finds something creepy as      out there!

Thanks, it's a work in progress :)

And hopefully will help keep the clues and reference material easy to find.

Good job Acheron. Can't rep you any more, so get some virtual one!

Agreed good job and thanks for compiling Acheron, I will be re-joining you out there shortly.

Just trying to help a bit :) I believe I have an old wordpress account and since I was late on reserving a comment, if it is needed.. I will setup a page offsite to handle the material. I will try to find some more time in a bit to add to it, but duty calls. Well, er, housework calls.

The key thing for me, from the quotes from the old woman in the hospital, is that whatever there is to find, is on the far side of the rift, near the end of the new outer arm, as opposed to being in the rift.

In complete agreement with you, that is exactly where I'll be headed to next.

This was my take on it as well. However, she does say to "plot a way across".. That doesn't necessarily mean to completely cross it, so I'm unsure. However, I'm near the far side and will be checking it out some :)

Nice job!
Oxford dictionaries definition of " Etymology" : The study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history. So how has the meaning of "Kahina" changed?

Edit: Just a thought, but I suspect Drew (in particular) is very precise about his phrasing; it may be a good idea to second check the exact wording of each of each of the clues, and putting in the url to the original instance.

Good catch, that might be an error on my part. I couldn't find Drew's original post, most likely it was "meaning" of Kahina. I'll do a quick scan and locate it, well try to.

I've been following this thread for quite a while but never contributed anything. I keep thinking of heading out but (and I know this sounds stupid) I keep thinking that if I found something it would really suck.

It's like some poor old prospector spending his life digging and searching around Sutter's Mill and then some jackass wanders up, bends over and says "Hey cool Gold" and then 1 million people descend on it and bye bye solitude.

But now that this thread's been posted maybe I'll wander out there. If I find something then my sincerest apologies to all the folks that did such hard work getting this far :).

Nope, I was right :). Here is a quote of his post.

"You may want to review the etymology of the name 'Kahina' too.

Cheers,

Drew."

Might be on to something with that. And thank you, you helped me find a piece of info I was looking for :)

Don't worry; it's the problem-solving process that gives the fun! I suspect when actually found the solution might be a let-down. I think Drew got a bit of flack when some people objected to the ROT13 clues he gave in some posts a while ago- but he was actually stimulating a lot of interesting problem-solving & got people thinking.
