Thargoids? I don't think this has anything to do with them. The old woman says (and I paraphrase) what is out there is far worse than the Thargoids, so I don't think it would be them. And if 'someone else' is out there, it is us going to them, not vice versa. If anything 'they' might see us as invaders. Especially if we employ the same strategy we have with the UAs and Barnacles: Destroying them.

Think carefully about who might be perceived as the instigators and aggressors. You are in danger of adopting a very 'Federation' line in your thinking.

Perceived digs at real world counties are entirely of your own making. I have no idea who and where you are in RL. But ED powers are well modelled on real world human behaviours and my own RP is likewise modelled is a similar fashion. Hudson is clearly written to be that very right wing gung ho type. You own post also fit into that same conservative, defensive style.

As for screaming for the Feds for protection? From the Thargoids? During Frontier First Encounters INRA, a joint creation of the Federation and Empire, got into a war with the Thargoids. The created the Mycoid virus that attacked Thargoids drives. This not only effectively won the war, but threatened the whole species. It was the Alliance that stole the cure and delivered in to the Thargoids to save them, thus leading to a peace treaty and non-aggression pact between the Thargoids and the Alliance.

If you Feds want to go throwing stones around at others, you go ahead. We won't come running. We will break out the pop-corn.

Yeah thats one of the hurdles for me - in game or meta-game? and if meta-game do I need to be a computer expert to join in? like the UA thing I could have NEVER have even begun to figure out as i know nothing about coputer code ASCII or whatever it was. Why would an alien ship even use that to draw a line diagram? Dont thargoids have compound eyes anyway?

yeah you are probably right tbh. Its just for me RR line is directional, so there must be something to point to the specific. and that part in the book hints at coordinates that then never appear - which is either just a dramatic effect for writing purposes or a clue.

but i think youre right that looking at galnet articles and figuring out what was implied in those articles is the smartest approach to the next clue

That bugged me too at first, why would aliens communicate in morse? Then re-thought and it's perfectly reasonable. It's mirroring or parroting. It's the first step in communication negotiation. You raise your right hand and say howdy, I raise my right hand and say howdy. UA shows up in a system and hears morse and then re-transmits it" I hear you", the line draw of your ships "I see you too".
Cross species communication is difficult. If we're so damn smart its up to us to figure out what those lesser critters are saying and not expect it the other way around. As we're pretty bad at doing that says we're not as smart as we like to think we are. ie Parrots don't parrot, we do.

Based on how long you were out, and your previous exploration trips, did that seem high? I kind of wonder if the "secret" of the Rift and beyond is simply something like "It's already been colonized, but now it's mysteriously abandoned." We've found no evidence of dangers. Nothing worse than Thargoids. No terrors in the deep black.

What if we're flying over the ruins of a major interstellar civilization? Our tales of terror may have come from human explorers unknowningly witnessing the final days of a species, driven to extinction by something worse than Thargoids. That threat may have wiped them out and then moved on, so we go there now and see nothing but an unusual spike in terraformed worlds.

I hate throwing in just another new(?) theory but this one gave me this certain twitch up my neck: What if the 7 Veils are a sequence of systems, preferably M-stars, that are all "stripped" off their planets?

I'm currently in a region were 4 systems in a row with otherwise healthy looking M-stars looked suspiciously naked (no planets at all). But the sequence stopped after 4. Maybe I should try an alternate route... It would be an incredible incidence though if I just stumbled across the key sentence somewhere in the middle of the Rift - no I don't think so.

Basicly the 7 veils are like chevrons? Hopefully Drew wont decided to add another chevron just to add more plot

And I apologise for any offence caused. I do see Hudson in that sort of light but I can see how drawing a bit heavily on RL terms and ideas could easily be taken the wrong away.
