The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Cool - I've been playing around with the math spreadsheets that tachyondecay kindly created towards the back end of the last thread - #767

BTW - what would be considered to be close or a deviation from the RR line? Whilst touring Prism, Sol, Avalon & Achenar, I happened to notice that they line up pretty well on the galaxy map. I threw their co-ordinates into the spreadsheet linked above and was amazed to see they are fairly close to the RR line in the opposite direction. (Approx 15-40ly deviation, Avalon being the closest.)

Not sure if it means anything but I've learned to follow coincidences...

I was also curious about the naming of the planets in Prism. They are all named after the family of Odysseus from Greek mythology.

Daedalion - was a son of Hesperos, or Lucifer, and the brother of Ceyx. Ceyx describes his brother Daedalion as a great warrior, full of courage and vigour but acknowledged that he could also be harsh, relishing the cruelty of war

Chione - Daedalion's daughter was said to be so beautiful that she was the object of a thousand men's desire. As it transpired Chione's admirers were not limited to mortal men. Whilst returning from visits to earth both Apollo and Hermes caught sight of Chione and were filled with a burning lust. By Hermes she gave birth to Autolycus who grew into a notorious thief and charlatan.

Amphithea - wife of Autolycus and mother of Anticlea, the mother of Odysseus.

Anticlea - (literally "without fame") was the daughter of Autolycus and Amphithea, and mother of Odysseus.

Eurycleia (spelt wrong in system) - the wet-nurse of Odysseus. As a girl she was bought by Laertes, Odysseus' father. He treated her as his wife, but she was never his consummated lover so as not to dishonor his real wife, Anticleia. Eurycleia's name means "broad fame," while Anticleia means "without fame."

Neaera - a daughter of Pereus, mother of Auge, Cepheus, and Lycurgus by Aleus. In one version she married Autolycus.

Mestra - was a daughter of Erysichthon of Thessaly. She had the ability to change her shape at will, a gift of her lover Poseidon according to Ovid. According to Ovid, Mestra married the thief Autolycus.

Common thread: Autolycus - I thought I might be onto something, but his name doesn’t appear to exist anywhere in the game!

I had a look at through this prism and I realised that I saw more patterns. 7 names for example.

Then I had a go at an anagram from the first letters of those planetary bodies.

D C A A E N M = Cadmean.

Cadmean meaning:

Wikipedia said:
A Cadmean victory (Greek: Kadmeia nike) is a reference to a victory involving one's own ruin,[1] from Cadmus (Greek: Kadmos), the legendary founder of Thebes in Boeotia and the mythic bringer of script to Greece.[2] On seeking to establish the city, Cadmus required water from a spring guarded by a water-dragon similar to the Lernaean Hydra. He sent his companions to slay the dragon, but they all perished. Although Cadmus eventually proved victorious, the victory cost the lives of those who were to benefit from the new settlement.[3]

The phrase "Cadmean victory" has been largely displaced in popular use by the somewhat similar expression "to win a battle but lose the war".

Cadmus , the bringer of the 1st alphabet to the ancient Greeks.

Also a slayer of monsters and all round action hero.

Founder of Thebes in Boeotia.

New Thebes and Boeotia are a couple of twin earthlikes in Aganippe, which ain't far off the R-R line.

Mythologically, Aganippe was also nymph who's spring granted inspiration.

The commodities market at Julian Market sells a Aganippe Rush, a rare good used by scholars to think clearly.

A neurological stimulant only available in Aganippe. Often used to temporarily increase the user's memory retention and awareness, it is a favourite among students and scholars. Recent reports have revealed that excessive use and abuse of the compound has been linked with psychotic episodes and hallucinations.

I've loaded some into my hold.

While it makes more sense that she immediately left for the Rift after the Galnet stories, the direction Frontier went with Power Play out a wrench into his planned continuing story.

Kahina's trip to the rift was shelved and she was recycled into being the leader of CoR as a means to keep the character present within the galaxy.

If this is how it went down then it is almost hilariously poetic. To me Elite is about this sense of wonder and excitement brought on by a vast open galaxy which is full of mysteries to be explored. Powerplay always seemed like a silly and frivolous addition when there are presumably things in the galaxy like lost worlds and sentient races to be found. Just open the galaxy map, turn on the Powerplay view, and then zoom all the way out. The bubble seems so insignificant when you do that. Who could care about the power struggles of petty bureaucrats and royalty when you look at the galaxy from that perspective?

The story of Salome even embodied that idea long before Powerplay was a thing. And then the story of Salome gets pushed out by Powerplay which has nothing but shallow power-hungry characters harming the masses out of their own greed... poetic indeed.

I think this just extended the time I stay out of the bubble lol. It's only 2k ly to the next nebula anyway...

I'm banking on quite a few official articles being blatant lies, as a matter of fact...

Considering that the Federation, Empire and Galcop tried to keep info on the Formidine Rift hidden away ... maybe as we get closer there should be news releases from the powers trying to steer people away from the Rift? It would be odd for them to just sit quiet, wouldn't it?

i think explorers both from sirius inc and cannon should continue to search in that area, and if people want to know more about our efforts our group forums link is in my sig

'I got as far as the Formidine Rift, not many folks can say that! No one has gone past it and lived to tell the tale.'
‘Edge of the galactic arm. Take a line from Reorte to Riedquat to the edge of the arm and … keep going.’ The woman grimaced. ‘Stars thin out, you can see the whole galaxy just hanging there.

A few comments and observations about the Prism system, Delaney and Patreus.

Just because the Prism system sits within Patreus's jurisdiction does not mean he controls the system. PP is not much more than an overlay. Mahon's economic area his well into Federation space, but he does not control those systems.

And the Prism system going independent was down to players not Delaney and a story line. Whilst there might have to be an explanation in story terms it is always going to have to fit around the actions of players not visa versa. If, for example some an imperial minor faction got expanded into Sol, and then pushed till they became the dominant power, and turned Sol blue on the map, it would be a bit pants if FDEV's narrative ignored this.

I don't think he found anything. He just likes to ad a bit of spice to his stories.[cool]

Really, I recall seeing it first in the old UA thread.

Something to go with Jaques Biowaste wine then?

Ya the powers all seem like ol'time mafia.

Nice system ya got here, hate to see anything bad happen to it.

Aye, a beautiful, delicious irony. And such an aptly human one too.

I may be wrong but i *believe* the thing that Erimus found was the non-procedurally generated system of Rho Cassiopeiae. Now that it has been visited I believe that line of inquiry has reached it's end.

Because those things are not there. The rest of the galaxy is a pretty desert with no risk, unless you like Astronomy. Which is awesome.

Also, the bubble's power structures are the things that gives you the stuff that lets you go exploring.

at least for the time being, if more commanders go deeper we may see Fdev change their tune in future content expansions

Nothing to do with 2.1 (I can always suicide back to civilized space for Beta) but I'll probably be heading back myself. I'd like to trade the redundant AFMU for an extra fuel tank. And get an A-rated fuel scoop.

Almost precisely the reason I went back too! Though I compromised and got the 6B Fuel scoop. Also threw on an SRV as I was missing going down on planets.
