The FSS should only have been used for signal sources.

I've done 7+ hours gold rushing with the new exploration system, both feet in all the way. Thoughout that experience it somehow made so much sense.. im completely baffled why the new exploration didn't turn out like this:

- Honk as usual.
- Probe mapping replacing detailed surface scanning + discovery claims.
- Buffed rewards as current.

This experience is what you do for the gold rush.. and it makes perfect sense. It feels organic to elite, its an upgrade from what we had before and is satisfying and interesting.

How the FSS ever come into being i can't imagine. Yes, it would be perfect for signal sources in system... and if it was placed as a new thing just for USS's it too sounds like it would be perfect. Forcing the FSS on exploration has achieved a double negative and wounds EVERYONE:

- It simply trolls and shuts down traveler exploration (i say this lightly because i personally hate traveling exploration and would never do it.. im sure its serious to those effected).
- It creates a gut sinking easy god mode for discovery that didn't use to be there.. robbing the basis from any further exploration in the system.

All it achieves is takes the legs out of two major exploration styles... i still don't get it.

This.

+1

I'd not thought of it but reading your post - Yes.

Flying or driving around blindly is hardly exploration.

In the over 1500 hours I've put into the game over different platforms and accounts, all the "exploration" I did (read: jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk jump honk ad nauseum) was to unlock the engineer.

Yesterday was the first time I actually enjoyed exploring, having a purpose to go somewhere, finding the new phenomena. Much better.

was suggested in beta but buried, also in the feedback thread something similar was proposed, alas here we are.

+1 but hey its prob against the grain but i support it.

Easier than pressing a button and then looking at the system map?

Anyway this topic was done to death, reanimated and done to death again during the beta...

Jump into system
Honk
Open FSS (instead of system map)
Waves will indicate presence of ELW/WW etc
Choose to investigate further or move on

Literally takes the same number of button presses as before with the added bonus you can get equivalent of a DSS scan without having to travel at all

I see where you're coming from but don't think it'd really fit in with the big picture. I think it'd still be alright for the discovery gameplay of bodies for those who want it for that.

I think a reasonable compromise workaround would be for having black bodies still after the honk, maybe in conjunction with a signal interpretation computer module, since many of us have an extra freed up slot now anyway.

Mentioned this during the beta as well, of course.

And for when you need something like 50-60 planets in system, and something like C f 7 is needed because <insertplayerhere> discovered <insertgreatalienthargoidorguardiandiscoveryhere> on the planet, you have to first map all the garbage to even figure out which one has the designation you need to head towards instead of instantly knowing from just a honk into system map.

Discovering 50-60 planets takes a few minutes tops once you get used to FSS and I'm unsure how often that would be an issue

Some ppl seem intent on complaining regardless instead of focusing on the MASSIVE positive changes we've all been given for FREE

Not sure I agree. For a start, "traveler exploration" hasn't been shut down. I tried it yesterday - you still get a fair amount of money for just honking, because all the bodies still appear for you, only without a detailed surface scan. So as much as I feared, it didn't really change at all.

The FSS mode, I generally like. It's a fun little distraction that sometimes feels like it takes too long, especially when there are a lot of signal sources and you only look for the planets. But still it's much faster than to fly to every single planet. So overall I like it so far. The probe mapping feels a little redundant/useless for me, but it's probably just me. I'm not really interested in mapping any planets, only at the rare occasion when I look for specific installations or geological features. Other than that, I won't use it much.

My god, how many topics are you going to start that you dont like the FSS? You've been starting topics over and over and over for well over a month now dude. You dont like it, it has been noted. Others do, also noted. It is in the game, and that is how it will remain.

That isnt even how the game works... If something is reported there, it means others have scanned it, which means the system map is filled in already. You're making up negative points that dont exist. In your example the new system is even faster as you dont even need to honk.

I go exploring for the experience of exploring the cosmos in first person as a sci-fi spaceship pilot, not so much for credits in the game, which I actually don't have much use for anymore in the game anyway.

The experience of exploration for me is a rather strange one with these changes to the mechanics.

Wait, so the FSS is only good for people who want the gameplay results from exploration rather than the experience? Ie, the credits and the name tags as quickly as possible? That makes no sense at all you can get an anaconda in less than 1 hour and 20 mins doing passenger missions.. why you jump between countless systems just for the game rewards?

That's even worse than travelling explorers.. see the people who use the honk for visual exploration really aren't doing it for the credits.. its so they can choose if they want to go SEE something.. that's it because otherwise you would be doing the full flight mode.

I think its illogical that quicker is an advantage for exploration.. really there so many better ways to make credits in the game.. consider credits as another pillar in the sandbox and do what it defines..

I've done this for 50+ hours, and the more I use it, the more I appreciate it, and its very thoughtful design. It's extremely slick and makes focused hunting of specific types of gameplay easier to find, stripping away the pure RNG elements of the old ADS.

I'm even starting to enjoy the probe mechanic (which I originally didn't care one way or the other about).
