The FSS should only have been used for signal sources.

I agree I Hate this stupid new mini game they have force changed on the game i paid to play rather than this one.

All we needed for exploration were things to find and a way to find them (planet scanning for the poi's) not a change to the mechanics.

All I wanted was to go into a system, honk to see a map of what is there and select places to go and map (yes I dont care we can map without moving, thats not exploration thats a dumb mini game that takes you out of the entertainment of flying a ship).

Why cant we keep the old honk and travel to map for those who prefer it, much the same way as the old mining is still there alongside the new - yes it was suggested a lot in beta by a lot of players and totally ignored as usual.

I play exclusively in solo, why would me playing he game i bought harm anyone, why should the game i paid for now not be playable, the gains from this patch are more than overshadowed by the loss because of the forced playing of a stupid mini game i have no interest in. May be the last straw for me.

That isnt even how the game works... If something is reported there, it means others have scanned it, which means the system map is filled in already. You're making up negative points that dont exist. In your example the new system is even faster as you dont even need to honk.

I was unaware of that admittedly. However I still stand by my dislike of the new system entirely and thus will not be partaking in anymore exploration should I choose to log in. My focus will become solely on Thargoid combat and story.

Aside from playing in Solo (lol take a chance man! see people for once!), Well said, have a rep

How the FSS ever come into being i can't imagine. Yes, it would be perfect for signal sources in system... and if it was placed as a new thing just for USS's it too sounds like it would be perfect. Forcing the FSS on exploration has achieved a double negative and wounds EVERYONE:

- It simply trolls and shuts down traveler exploration (i say this lightly because i personally hate traveling exploration and would never do it.. im sure its serious to those effected).
- It creates a gut sinking easy god mode for discovery that didn't use to be there.. robbing the basis from any further exploration in the system.

All it achieves is takes the legs out of two major exploration styles... i still don't get it.

Yeah, it's ironic how unrewarding it feels even as it deposits more money in my bank than any number of Ceos/Sothis runs could have back in the day.

I dont mind the shooting at the planets so much. It’s kinda fun in its own silly way but FSS is not new gameplay its just more convoluted. And you have to change from cockpit view to use it. I mean, what?

Jump into system
Honk
Open FSS (instead of system map)
Waves will indicate presence of ELW/WW etc
Choose to investigate further or move on

Literally takes the same number of button presses as before with the added bonus you can get equivalent of a DSS scan without having to travel at all

Thing is, most of those who have an issue with it are not looking for ELWs or WWs, the kind of things the FSS lets you scan individually for, we're looking for stuff like orbital relations, proximities, etc. that only shows up after scanning everything in the system.

Just making the initial scan populate the navpanel in newly visited systems with unknowns like it does in previously scanned systems would go a long way to giving us data we can make educated guesses based on, and decide if we want to stick around and fly out to look at stuff, or move on and leave any ELWs or whatever in the system for anyone else to find.

I mean, like Mass Effect 2, it was at least good for this one joke.

Yeah, it really needs to be a semi-transparent overlay in the cockpit like the rest of the UI. So I feel like I'm sitting looking at it on a screen aboard my ship. Not on my phone.

I agree that the game should "know what it is" for the core mechanics at least. That is, being a first person sci-fi spaceship piloting game (IMO) with optional extra stuff on the side, which is fine.

Parking in supercruise and mucking around with maps isn't really how I get my kicks exploring and playing the game. Might be nice enough for fleshing some stuff out though.

I've done 7+ hours gold rushing with the new exploration system, both feet in all the way. Thoughout that experience it somehow made so much sense.. im completely baffled why the new exploration didn't turn out like this:

- Honk as usual.
- Probe mapping replacing detailed surface scanning + discovery claims.
- Buffed rewards as current.

This experience is what you do for the gold rush.. and it makes perfect sense. It feels organic to elite, its an upgrade from what we had before and is satisfying and interesting.

Oh, its you qgain.

For the record (and FWIW), it is done (for now) to make it work in VR. With your overlay, things wouldn't be readable in VR.

We have been doing this for 4 years with...

*drum rolls*

The System Map and the Galaxy Map, and no one cared a rats behind about it. :p

No way, the old system was a complete joke and was a core reason why many couldn’t take Exploration seriously.

The new system by contrast is actually pretty awesome, makes mapping systems feel more engaging than just honk, jump, honk. That it also can probe for special encounters is amazing too.

We need more improvements that actually involve the player playing the game and not just phoning it in while watching Netflix in the background. This exploration update is a step in the right direction.

Strange, because exploration for me previously with an infinite range honk discovery scanner was absolutely devoid of any degree of interactivity besides pressing the button once.

Here comes the new system that actually involves a very easy and straightforward but somewhat engaging means of seeing what you can find, and it actually takes a lot less time than flying to and from each body, which is a big bonus for any systems with bodies 100k ls apart etc.

What's with a post here also talking about having to go through all the garbage before finding the good stuff you want to? That's why there's a filter bar to tune into the frequencies you do wish to find. Notice the arrows when you do this direct you towards the objects you set the filter for?

For me this is a positive change since I cared little for exploration before when honking was just so one button and see all. My only complaint is the FSS giving you the "Too Close" crap when dropping into a system and being forced to fly away from the star before the FSS will accept a reading on it.

As for another post here reiterating that this update is FREE, sorry, but that rubbish needs buried as this is paid for content through Horizons.

When you use reddit or other forums where you can see a measure of popularity of opinions, you'll see you are in the overwhelmingly vast majority. There is a small group of people who dont like it, and some, like the OP, have made topic after topic after topic after topic about how they dont like it. While it sucks for them, a very small minority had their way for four years. Now the overwhelming majority of people will have some fun.

Had you read any of the previous comments explaining this, you'd know that the things you can filter for in the scan are what many explorers consider "garbage".
Nobody cares about the umpteenth WW or ELW sitting in a system somewhere. They're just more standard same old objects out there that you can see in a million systems.
What we look for are the interesting curiosities stellar forge throws up, things which require data on a system that you used to have available in the sysmap but now only get after fully scanning every single body in the system. With the old black body system that was tested but not implemented some time back in conjunction with the new systems, then you lot who only care about tagging everything and maximising your credit payout get what you want, and those of us who want to be able find breathtaking sights we can fly out to and see up close, get what we want. With the bonus that you get the first discovered tags on all those planets we ignore because they're not part of something interesting.

IT WAS NEVER A ZERO SUM GAME THOUGH.
BOTH CAN EXIST IN PARALLEL.
THEY ADDED ALL THE NEW MINING TOOLS WITHOUT REMOVING SURFACE LASER MINING.

Let me reiterate what I said during beta. I will continue to advocate for minor QoL improvements to the FSS mechanic (like more situational awareness whilst in the UI, more flexibility in acceleration/deceleration whilst in the UI, more preview info after you honk & hqving the "tuning needle" remain where you last left it), but I believe the mechanic overall is very fun & engaging as is.
