Got one and its good. However, everything went a bit strange and I couldnt start the game one I'd deleted the Nvidia drivers. I had to go back to a restore point to get everything working again. I have no idea why, and the ticket is still under investigation.

Sorry if this has been asked :)

Hi

I'm currently running the alpha on a MacBook Pro i7, 16GB DDR3, GT 650M 1GB and I'm getting about 20-30ish FPS on the 1440 x 900 display.

I would like to build a hackintosh so I can replace my ageing MacPro (2008) and would like to run my ultra wide monitor just for E:D maxed out at 2560 x 1080. I'm currently looking at a i5, 8GB, EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 Superclocked ACX 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card.

Does anyone know if this will be up to the job, on max settings at 60fps? I'm a little worried that I might be disappointed when I finally build it.

Thanks in advance

Richard

Well if that was a windows box with those components, I think you'd be OK (i5 > 3 GHz) but future expansions (planetary landings etc) may require more oomph. Seems like a fairly good spec to me though.

Since I last posted this I have been looking around for a better deal and I came across a R9 270x with 4gb ram compared to a R9 280x with just 2gb and the 280x was £40 more expensive so I think I'll be going for the cheaper card.

Finally made a choice and decided to go with an Nvidia GTX760 and not one of the AMD cards mainly because of the issues that the alpha has with AMD cards. I ordered the card from amazon & it was between £25-40 cheaper than the equivelant card I would have got at most of the other places I would normally shop like Scan, Overclockers & Ebuyer so I went for it and the card should be here Thursday.

OK, from what I can figure out, the "best" slot I have available for a gfx card is a PCI express x 8. Is this right?

Now, what "current" cards (GeForce 750 ish) card would fit this thing?

Thanks,

The number of people running more than 4 cores AND playing Elite will be tiny. It's just not worth Frontiers time to try and make that setup more effective than a 4770.

I'm one of those people.. my gaming laptop is a:

Digital Storm x17D Laptop (Model: 9570)
Intel Core i7-3970X (Six Core) (15MB Cache), 2x SLI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M 4GB each, 32GB memory and a raid0-900GB SSD boot drive, win7 pro 64bit, with Thrustmaster HOTAS warthog and dual Cougar MFDs.

and ED runs very nicely tyvm.

The point on the rumors for the GTX 880 ( Ti) in Maxwell

Some new information, concerning the future chips Maxwell high end, and especially NVIDIA GTX 880 and 880 Ti. These two cards will be more efficient than the current 780 and 780 Ti but more surprising: they would be sold cheaper than the current high-end, to better compete with AMD.

what is the cheapest GPU to buy ?

I wonder what it could be, CPU and ram apart, the
cheapest graphic card you can buy to play elite in a ''decent''* way.

any idea ?

*decent way it means= no lag, minimum settings, minimum res, no crashes.

Honestly Geforce 760

I've played with a few lower cards but I really don't suggest playing with less than a Geforce 760 based card with 2Gb at least. Cheaper and older cards will play but will slow to an absolute crawl under load ( funny thing though is when they do its really nostalgic .. So like C64 Elite its not funny. )

I cant say as to how this relates to elite.

"The Best Budget Graphics Cards"

'Integrated graphics like AMD's Radeon HD and Intel's HD Graphics series that are built into their respective processors are good enough to play 3D games, but only if you count older titles like the Far Cry 1-3 series, or those that have lower 3D requirements, like Diablo III. Newer games require a little more power, particularly if your desktop PC is using a lower-priced processor like an AMD A4, Intel Core i3, or Pentium dual core. That's where a discrete graphics card comes in.

We've tested many budget graphics cards, and the current crop is good enough to play AAA titles at 1080p HD resolution with eye candy like anti-aliasing and high detail levels turned on. Upgrading your graphics card doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg, though. There are new models available for less than $250 that will be able to handle the level of gameplay you're looking for. It's also a good idea to check out previous years' models, as many will have fallen in price since they launched.

Besides a low price, one of the benefits of using a budget card is that you won't likely need to upgrade your desktop's power supply. Many brand-new budget cards don't need extra leads from your power supply, saving you from that frustrating moment when you open the case to install your new card only to find your power supply unit can't handle it.

If you're looking for a graphics boost, but you're on a budget, the list below is a good place to start.'
