Cheers Andy - will be ditching the old card (well giving it to a local school). I've seen some stuff on the web saying that alot of these PSU guides over-egg the amount of power that is ever actually used; is this true?

I'd say that's probably true, the simple fact they dont list hard drives by type on the config page suggests they've given themselves a bit of headroom to account for minor variations, not that the 4w difference between SSD's and platter drives would make much difference to a psu selection. (SSD's use an adverage of 2 watts while platter drives use 6 watts)

that said it is a 6 year old PSU your talking about so maybe not a good idea to have it running on the ragged edge of it's performance envelope.

if the config says 'close enough' i'd give it a try, should the system suddenly become unstable at least you will know where to look.

Moved thread to Hardware section.

Still have a Nvidia 6800GTX at the moment, will wait to see how it performs befre deciding if I should upgrade.

Thanks for all the advice folks.

I've done some digging about and picked up the following card from a guy here in Ireland: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclocked w/ACX Cooler. I've also plumbed for a new 750W power supply from Cosair given my existing one is 6 years old now! Got the lot for €315 here so I think thats ok.

I'm hoping that the above card should be grand for a good couple of years and it will nice to run some games at full pelt now while I wait for E D! ;)

Yeah I've just ordered a 4GB EVGA GTX 770. I've fitted a new Corsair 800W PSU just to make sure! Can't wait to try it out! Bought all this simply for ED!

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
A Titan would be sweet, but I'll stick with my dual 680s in SLI. That better be sufficient! :)

I think my setup will work. Dual ati 5870's. Until Star Citizen comes out. Then I building a new computer. But this topic should be in hardware section.

Indeed, unless you're running at ludicrous resolutions, on multiple screens, GTX 680 SLI should chew anything up.

I don't think I've run anything in the last 6 months (I've got the same cards in my rig) where my cards haven't been effectively telling me: "Ok, bored now...NEXT!" ;)

The price is still around $ 1,000. So not very affordable for a graphics card. Unless you are a millionaire or really passionate, I think need to be crazy to put so much money into a graphics card

Wouldn't worry too much if you have a gfx card from the last 2 years. Most of them can run all modern games at 1920 by 1080 on ultra. You don't even have to spend that much. I got a AMD 7950 3 Gb card off Amazon for £214. It can run Bioshock Infinite on ultra at 1920 by 1080 with out breaking a sweat, it's not even over clocked at the minute.

I have an Ati Raedon 6990. It runs all new games fluently on high to ultra performence. But I am going to upgrade soon. Need a new Pc.

I think GPU requirements are going to shoot up a bit soon.
I've a 7970 OC'd to 1GHZ and even it struggles with some recently released games such as ARMA 3 and Rome 2 at max settings. The issues could be software/driver based though.

With the next gen consoles coming out soon I see cross platform gaming on the PC to require better hardware than that has been required over the last couple of years.

These are the recommended specs for the upcoming Battlefield 4
OS -Windows 8 64-Bit
Processor -AMD Six-core CPU or Intel quad-core CPU
Memory - 8 GB
Graphics Card - AMD Radeon HD 7870 or NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660
Graphics Memory 3 GB
Hard Drive 30 GB

If you are buying now or in the future I'd recommend getting at least the above. If you've already got a decent machine though you should still be OK but you'll slowly have to keep lowering your settings till you eventually can't meet the minimum specs (a good few years though).

Moved to Hardware section, and merged with other graphics card queries. :D

I've never quite understood those who are turned off about the cost of having a reasonable gaming PC. It offers way more functionality than a console, many of the components can be reused in new systems, sold on ebay, etc..

Im currently using a 5 year old processor (OC), DDR2, and what would be considered an entry level graphics card (6790). I can play most games at 1080p on high detail. Its definitely coming towards the end of its useful life for my gaming needs, its going to struggle with the next gen of games, but what a rig its been.

Its probably one of the most compatible setups for doing a hachintosh install of Mac OSX with a genuine retail copy.

What holds it back the most is the motherboard, CPU and memory.
All fixed for about £300 - which would bring it up to date. I've checked on ebay and my current motherboard, cpu and memory would go for about £100. Lets say the GPU, £50.

So I've spent 150 quid. If I buy a decent graphic card now for £150. Thats £300 to completely update my system. an additional £50 and I can have a GTX 760. A PC gaming rig has never been so affordable, wait till next year and even better deals will be available.

The Radeon R9 290X looks interesting and with an October release the timing is quite good for anyone looking to upgrade for alpha/beta.

Might even force some price cuts from Nvidia.

Of course not, Elte Dangerous should be accessible to everyone. Everyone is not extreme gamer and do not have the money to buy the equipment, very upscale
