Sorry Darren, can you point us to the announcement, or is it in the DDF?

thanks

Ab

It's in the Private Backers Forum.

I know there's been some discussion about the machine specs needed for the alpha test, as we're approaching the first build delivery I can share some of the development specs of where we are at the moment. Optimisation and performance are obviously ongoing tasks and as more features are added through the alpha and beta periods we'll need to keep revisiting it.

To play the first build released in December we're currently looking at the following:

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System Ram (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU, 1GB video RAM(my reasonably low end machine has a GTX 285 with 2GB)

As I say we're looking to try and reduce the spec if possible through detail options and optimisations, so the final min spec for the game should be lower than that stated above, but for the initial alpha tests you'll need to be in that range.

Edit: Minimum video ram spec updated to 1GB.

Okay, I've been doing some research and I've come to the conclusion that the following is the best mid-range price/performance option at the moment:

Radeon HD 7790, 1GB DDR5, benchmark 3,006
£88 from Amazon

There is nothing below this at good value that I can find - everything is either not that much cheaper or just far far less powerful. If you want to go above this you have to spend at least £150 (though that may be worth it if you want 2GB DDR5 - the Radeon 7870 and R9 270X are both good choices). And beyond that for more power you'll want to spend £190 on a GTX 760.

You think Ebay sellers and Ebay itself are any better? :-/

But yeah, not my favourite retailer either. I'd normally go with Ebuyer for computer stuff.

Ebay perhaps not, but the sellers yes.

hehe.. kinda running out of places to buy stuff from if I want to keep it ethical. That 2gb is > 1gb surely..

make sure you check the specs etc.. I just had a quick look for you, so might have missed some fine details.

The one on Ebuyer is the Black Edition from XFX. Presumably coming O/C and with extra years of support. So perhaps a premium - but tbh I have never found Ebuyer to be cheap - notwithstanding Amazons prices.

New Graphics card? Compare it to your old one.

Just found this nice doodaa, from Anandtech. It lets you compare graphics cards (admittedly not a lot, but..) you'll see power, heat, noise, benchmarks etc. May not be of any use to you, but you never know..

Just pick what cards you'd like to compare on the right hand side and click 'view comparison' .

Unfortunately the Anandtech one doesn't currently have the latest AMD cards like the HD290/290x.

I'm deciding whether to upgrade from a HD7970 to the HD 290x as I play on a 30" (2560x1600) monitor, however will probably wait for Oculus Rift as so far ED is ok with the 7970.

The Toms Hardware Graphics Card comparison chart is updated monthly:

I've looked at that before, and while it's good for comparing where your card sits in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't tell you much else(unless it's my browser thats not showing anything of course). I like the detail of information in the Anandtech tool, but it lacks the number of cards, unlike the hwcompare tool. A combination of both would be ideal. Of course it depends on what information you want/need etc, but you can never have too much information when picking hardware methinks.

On the face of it i agree, but also there is what is the best value gfx card for your particular price range now, actually probably the more useful bit:
