The hunt STARTED on the 28th...apparently!

I wouldn't go so far as calling the event that played out today as a total screw up, but it did illustrate in a very good way the pro's and con's of Open, the gamemaster- and communication talents of FD, and just how much PR that can be harvested by simply blowing one well picked ship up. As always, I think it was another great learning opportunity for FD.

Personally I set 0 pips to expectations when dealing with FD. Easier that way, and much, much better for my piece of mind.

Still, can't wait to see the 'incredible, The truth.'

I had no idea there was something like a hunt going on. I read the announcement at the time and forgot it immediately. I don't care about it this kind of Open multiplayer stuff to be honest.
I just want aliens in the game. So I will wait patiently for it to happen and let others 'hunt' for what will be revealed eventually anyway.

Well I learnt a big lesson today. I learnt that if I hadn't bothered reading the forums and watched FD videos, I too would have had ZERO knowledge about the aforementioned "hunt", and would have simply carried on playing as per norm.

And therefore lies the crux of a lot of Elite Dangerous "gameplay" and it's reliant on using outside formats to find relevant information i.e Forums, reddit, youtube etc.

FD essentially locked the WHOLE OF AUSTRALIA out of this.

Their instancing system is so bad and so broken that we cannot connect outside our region, and others cannot connect to us. This issue is exclusive to Elite.

They then had the bloody nerve to make this open only, and only for people who can see them - UK players - in the wild. And there's only really one to see at a time, so one person gets some fun and everyone else gets to read about it.

This is the absolute worst way I can imagine doing anything like this. It is just inconceivably, impossibly stupid and poorly done. I cannot believe I am witnessing something this poor unfold.

I feel saddened when I hear about the troubles my few Australian friends have to put up with regards their internet connections :( I can only hope things improve for you and pick up real soon WreckWren. Here's hoping ;)

I'm certainly hoping so, moBo - we haven't had reasonably good internet available here for all that long, and it's just demotivating when all your games work except for one that's stuck in the 90s connection wise

Technical limitations and its the only fair mode for this to happen, I don't know why you were expecting something else when you were going to have to interact with FD acting as NPCs. They cant be in thousands of peoples solo mode game all at once.
He just wanted a heads up. A simple "you need to be in open to participate" was all he was asking for. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

It was chaos at 10am for the 1st clue , open was filled with heat meta ships cooking commanders left and right .. i eventually gave up and sat in station catching all the events on streams and forums , participating would have boiled down to being interdicted again and again by some overly aggresive players who were only interested in killing than taking part in the adventure. Not for me to tell someone how to play but i was more keen on finding out more about this mystery august 28th post.

This is the heart of the whole problem right there. How many people go to participate in the unfolding events as they happened in the game? Was it just 1 guy? All the rest of us got to experience the game on the forums, trying to make sense of the mess of everything that happened IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT in north america. Some of us sleep, Frontier. Not everybody lives in the UK you know. Even if the Aussie's didn't have instance issues it was still something like 3am Monday morning when it all went down.

Elite is starting to turn into Eve. It's more fun reading about the game than playing. But even now there's so much chaos on the forums I'm not even going to try following it. I'm looking forward to Obsidian Ant's video on this, maybe he'll make some sense of it for me.

Think I'll just play some Star Citizen today.

Being grumpy and not aimed at anyone in particular .. Why do people think they are entitled to be the special snowflake who gets given the message, finds the wreckage or even makes first contact?

So long as someone does and passes it on for others to do(which the canon thread clearly demonstrates they do) then others and take up the mantle to work out the rest

People who didn't see the message or meet the FDEV are not being excluded from the content. They can use their brains regardless of if they see it or not. In fact they have the advantage of having more pieces of the puzzle than the first guy who sees it.

What about using the timezones as an advantage, so players can be working on the problem 24 hours a day rather than limiting to European times?

This set of content is about crowdsourcing information and problem solving, not about being 'the one'

Because one of those things you said sounds like a fun game to play. The other one sounds like a fun game to read about but not play.

And again I say to you, had I just continued to play in solo, I would have had no idea said content was NOT available. Also, I want/would like content I can play and discover on my own WITHOUT having to search for out of game on the various forums etc.

Some of the most rewarding times I have had in gaming is when i'm not actually in front of the screen playing. It's when I've been thinking of tactics, builds, reading guides, working out how something can work, what lies beyond X Y or Z when I've been doing other stuff.

You don't need to be playing the game to play the game if you see what I mean. It's a way of adding content and enjoyment that lasts way beyond our time in front of our PC's

It's a very courageous decision by FD to go this way as it would be much easier to make everyone special and generate content just for them but (and this might just be me) I want my games to be daring and not conventional.

I see it like playing Tomb Raider - getting stuck on a puzzle - and watching a YouTube Video on how to solve it ...... cheating ... (that's a bit extreme I know. :) )

No, more like progression raiding where you encounter a boss and you and your raid group spend the next week talking and discussing tactics on how to beat it

And I am seriously very happy for you that Elite Dangerous fills YOUR needs :) For me, that is not my preference. I have many other pastimes, reading a book, watching a movie, to name a few, that I prefer to do when away from my pc. Switch off from the game ;)

if I spent a week talking about how to kill a boss in a computer with my friends, I think I'd have to check myself into the mental home for a while :)

Except in WoW, you discuss while your not playing. Making plans and strats. That's not what happening. I'm playing a completely different game waiting for this to play out and hope it adds something good.

Bottom line is they are adding more and more 'open only' or 'more benefits when done in open' stuff, and people just need to get used to it.

No they don’t, the game offers solo, group, and open play all in the same galaxy. You do not go and drag players in with that sales pitch, then start limiting content to one group over another, not if you want to retain as many customers as possible.

While I play in open most of the time, I understand why others may not want to, and I support their right to play in alternative instances as the game supposedly supports them. People who choose to play in open paid no more for the game than those who do not, and they do not have any greater influence on the outcome of events in the game. Nor should they, while playing in open is tougher than solo or a pve group, it is a players choice to play in open rather than the others, and they should not expect any greater rewards for having done so.

The bottom line is that FDEV dropped the ball with this event; they did not have to meet players in person, they could have scripted an npc to send messages to players and pass on the next clue based on any number of triggers, they could if they had bothered, even offer a basic conversation with said npc, with yes no, or multiple choice responses; other games have been doing so for years.
