Will Elite Dangerous be mouse or joystick driven - I'm thinking particularly about combat?

My 2 cents: Mouse for Freelancer combat control was fun; Mouse for EVE Online is not great.

Unsure what it will be.

If you can control your craft using a mouse that will make me happy - too many FPS's and MMO's to retain this muscle memory I think :(

Xseries did well on fighter combat with mouse no need for joystick. But still I prefere joystick. So I hope X: D supports Joysticks.

Nothing about controls or input devices has been confirmed yet. I think I can say with relative confidence though, that for the PC version you'll be able to use a mouse and keyboard! ;)

No Flight Aids Please For FE2 fans

I think the default will be mouse + keyboard,
with support for joysticks and joypads

+1 from me. That way everyone is happy. For me personally, old skool FE2 flight model with no flight aids using mouse and keyboard or if it does have flight aids please have an option to turn em all off. I loved the way the ships handled in FE2

JJFFE style is ok too (each thruster around the ship's hull mapped to the numeric keypad) but without auto braking thrusters

Agree with all that Alien, would be fun to have one of those massive joysticks with all the buttons, but I know I'd soon be back to the good old Mouse and Keyboard.

I want full joystick support - that means:

Stick movement,
Stick twist,
Throttle,
All buttons configurable.

If the combat shapes up closer to Oolite than Frontier (I haven't played the original Elite), then it will be vital to be able to easily slow down and speed up the craft - the only reliable way to do that is with an analogue throttle control.

If the combat is like Frontier, I'll be very disappointed. For me, Frontier's combat was by far its weakest aspect. Something like Oolite's (and the original Elite presumably) combat would be fine. :)

Yes Space Pirate, a variable throttle would be handy if using a non Newtonian flight model, essential really I would think. For Newtonian flight modes, as I said to Space Pirate in a PM, Pioneer is experimenting with user selectable low power thruster settings. Try it out, perhaps this is something the Elite IV devs might consider.

Same here, the main thing I'd want is to also have support for a large number of axes, and have all of those remappable/invertable. The number of times I've played a game to find out that my Saitek X52 has the throttle permanently mapped to the little slider attached to the (now useless) big throttle lever, and inverted no less... What I would like to see is to be able to use that slider axis as a dynamic sensitivity control, drop it to low for sensitive docking manoeuvres, but able to immediately slap it up to max if someone interupts me guns blazing during that docking.

Offcourse for PC the default interface suport Keyb & Mouse.
Joystick optional.
But in current state of windows OS number 8 and powerfull windows tablet PC or convertable.
The option for touchscreen support is also possible.
And windows Kinect.

If there's a touch interface I will not using it, touch screen technology should stay where it belongs on tablets and phones NOT desktops.

Joysticks

Setting aside the discussion of which type of controls you'd like to see implemented, can I get some advice amongst the joystick users as to their favourite hardware?

I have a knackered old MS Sidewinder that saw many hours of joy in the late 90's but I think its time for a new one should I get my wish of a strong manual control element in Elite:Dangerous.

Thoughts?

Logitech 3D Pro is a great stick for the price. My first actually.

Thrustmaster t 1600m is what I am using right now, another excellent stick for the price.

I prefer reasonably priced sticks, so I can't help you with any expensive reccomendations.
