Ships The Keelback Club

I can't remember when I have modded my powerplant... But I often use a projectile (MC, Cannon, missile) setup so very power efficient weapons etc....

I spent nearly a week with a Python before selling it and using the money to pimp out a couple of other ships for different roles instead. It's undeniably okay at every role, but it's so boring to fly and has no character at all. Been scavenging about in my Keelback this morning and I'm a happy spess commander once more.

I've just joined the "sold my new Python and am considering repurchasing a Keelback" club myself! I like ships that make you tinker and strategize to make them work for you :D

I enjoy both but I find the Python fairly boring thus far, both have moderate engineering work done to them. I'm constantly looking to jump back into my Keelback for any reason.

Well, I'd like to join this fine club because after trying out all kinds of ships the Keelback somehow just feels perfect for everything I do around elite. Mine is fitted a bit as a "jack of all trades" with the main focus beeing survivability, without a fighterbay but with some engineered modules thrown into the mix (I'm still working on unlocking all the level 4 and 5 mods). I named her "ARS MAGNA"(thats latin and can roughly be translated as "The great art") and I simply love how she feels to fly. Here is the base fitting I'm using for her: https://eddp.co/u/vigoFtd7

With my current engineeringmodules(mostly level 2 or 3) she has a max jumprange of 23.17 LY, max boost speed of 394, normal topspeed of 262 and even when flying as close to the sun as possibly while scooping she heats up to a max of 65%. Shieldstrength is at 328, with everything deployed I'm only at 95% powerconsumption and her engineerd thrusters really help in making her handle quite nicely.

+1 for not only relying on the fighter to make the Keelback just feel right!

I'll soon be selling my second Vulture, because as crazy as it sounds, I do better at bounty hunting in my trusty old Keelback (or my Viper III for that matter).

My current configuration is an armored tank with engineered size 2 MC turrets and vanilla size 1 railguns. I personally find this one of my best ships for using railguns because its sluggishness actually makes it easier for me to do precision aiming with charge-n-fire weapons. The turrets make up for lack of maneuverability, as does my fighter.

I've been training up my fighter pilot from mostly harmless (she's now competent), which I think is part of the fun of SLF. I've got the fighter with beams, so I send her out to "tag" more distant targets and strip their shields while I catch up with my big guns. It makes for very different gameplay, because it's more tactical than just flying around and shooting stuff. I actually feel like a "commander" when flying the Keelback :D

The one thing I have learned is not to fly in a wing with other players in this ship unless I know and trust them. I've lost more ships in Mobius to wingmates who shoot at things they ought not shoot at then I have to griefers in Open, LOL. With this ship it's fight or die, there is no "flight", and there is nothing but "die" when a wingmate hits a cop. I save my engineered Viper III for winging up with strangers.

My current dream ship is the FGS (two ranks to go), but I look at the rebuy on that beast and I wonder if I'll find myself back in the Keelback / Viper III for the average bounty hunting that I do.

May I join the club?

Is there a club for those who are considering selling their vultures and buying a Keelback instead?

Hey all, just finished reading though every single post on this thread, and I'm pretty sure, based on what I read, that I'll really enjoy a KB.

I'm hoping to get some good PvE bounty hunting and "cargo liberation" going on with it. I would add some PvP piracy too but with the 2.4 beta including a global PvP murder bounty it's not looking promising (unless they attack me first somehow).

I like the idea of letting my fighter drop ships shields (fixed beam taipan is what I'm looking at) while the mothership lurks with a really low heat sig to avoid detection. After shields fall, launch a missile barrage or something kinetic for the kill.

Oh, and I'm pretty new so I only have Farseer unlocked so far, no pp as of yet, and I'm leaning alliance (for ideological reasons), though I've not declared any allegiance yet.

Any suggestions as to what I can do with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I sold TWO Vultures. The first had two MCs, which dished out DPS but got boring pretty quick, so I sold it. I later discovered cannons and bought a second Vulture to play around with these (I named it "Boomstick"), and it was fun due to a different kind of play-style, but I found myself staring at expensive rebuy screens a bit too often..

In my humble Keelback I rarely see the (much cheaper) rebuy screen. But more importantly, I have way more fun. I have multiple gameplay styles right at my fingertips. If I'm feeling more strategic and relaxed, I fly the mothership and let the turrets and my SLF do most of the work for me. I also love my two railguns on the Keelback, which I find easier to aim because I don't overcompensate like I do on a fast ship like a Viper.

When I'm in the mood to move and jab like Muhammad Ali, I'll jump in the fighter and have a blast, more than I ever did in the Vulture. While the fighter itself is much weaker than the Vulture, I think the six hardpoints of the Keelback / SLF combo packs more punch and offers much greater versatility than the Vulture's two L3 HPs.

So yes, welcome to the club!!

UPDATE - I just noticed that I said all this just two posts up... Oops! It was so long ago that I forgot! This thread needs more love [heart] [heart] [heart] [heart]

How's the Keelback for scooping cargo on the fly? I'm not sure if it'd be worth it to get collection limpets or not for some LT diamond liberation.

And would it be worth it to go for a cool running build in order to avoid detection and weapons locks? I like the idea of being all sneaky, lurking in the shadows of an asteroid.

Just wondering if this is a viable ship to have without heavy engineering? I got a fairly decent roll on my FSD but looking at some of the time/resource requirements I can't see myself unlocking some of the other engineers anytime soon possibly never (I have the first 3 unlocked with an invite for Selene now). I am a fairly casual Xbox One player so I don't really want to spend my time grinding engineer stuff all the time.

I like this idea of having a ship that does Salvaging missions both in space and planetary and it looks like this ship could fit the bill. But If the only way this ship is really nice is engineering (it's clear some ships really benefit from engineering more than others) then I may have to pass on it.

Does anyone use it more or less as stock? Is it still fun to fly? functional?

The only thing Engineered on my Keelback is the lvl 2 MC turrets, which is nice since turreted weapons are normally quite nerfed compared to gimbaled and fixed. Everything else is stock. I'm a PvE-only player at the moment, FYI.
