Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Ok decided to get the game despite my negative impression from all the previews. I must say I am super impressed by the procedural generated terrain. It has some extremely interesting landscape features. They even have cliff overhangs, Wow. I would love to drive a SRV in this kind of terrain, it would be a real challenge, and quite nerve wracking.

The best thing I think is it gives us and probably FD a yardstick when it comes to their implementaion of atmospheric worlds, flora and fauna and walking around. I think they have a big job on their hands but I think they can do it justice in Elite.

My guess is that life in ED is going to be very very different [from NMS]. Knowing FDev they will probably attempt to implement a biodiversity algorithm that is realistic to the elements and conditions of each planet. There will be a majority of planets that are completely devoid of life and dangerous to anything organic. A number of them will have no more than microbial life and some simple flora. It will end up being very rare that there are planets flourishing with life. Further, I doubt they will go the "Spore" route with different assets slapped together. I hope they are able to create something that will procgen the entire creature, not just the configuration of a pool of parts. A super tall order.

FDEV MUST add overhangs, cliffs and pointy mountains sometime in the future... Or planets will never look great. Especially planets with erosion (atmo). I wonder how they did it in NMS...

I saw the IGN review score before. Think they gave it a '6', saying something like 'big universe, but very bland'. Won't stop me from picking it up eventually as most people seem to have mixed opinions.

Bought this despite intending not to just yet.

My overriding feeling... its Subnautica in space, virtually identical styles of game play aside from a few differences. Not a bad thing necessarily but I am getting a very strong feeling that this could get samey very quickly. Love the art style in general and so far its presenting itself reasonably well in all the major ways that new titles should.

Its a slow burner and like Sean says ... its very chill.

I can't speak for anyone else. But I'm rather enjoying this game so far. Its nice to just relax, and hunt down obelisks to learn more words.

Haven't managed to figure out where to claim pre-order rewards just yet, but I'm not that concerned about that. Just relax, jump around, don't      off the minder bot things, and get ready to do a lot of walking. I haven't encountered any predators yet either, so the only combat I've seen are with the floaty minder bots.

Edit: and yes, it is subnautica in space. But thats not necessarily a bad thing. I would be playing Subnautica right now, if I didn't want to loose my progress after every update.

...Elite can certainly take some cues from NMS...

That's my feeling as well. I wouldn't want to see precisely the same type of exploration mechanics in ED, but there are some ideas that FD could adopt and shape to the own purposes. Sadly, I don't see this happening.

Voxels, and that's the issue with ED - the Cobra engine is not a voxel manipulator.

This explains it better than I can: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voxel

Approaching a station perfectly captures that 80s scifi paperback cover look. A few hours later, and I must say that I hope FD borrows liberally from NMS's design for spacelegs and wandering around life-bearing planets. Exploring in ED feels like a complete chore by comparison, even though the core mechanic is the same (point at thing you want to scan and wait for the timer to run out). The difference is that in NMS there is lots of stuff to look at/keep you busy between scans and the scans take about five seconds instead of 30. Also, POIs are a *lot* more common. In ED I can expect to be driving around for twenty minutes before I find an asteroid or outcrop, whereas in NMS even on foot you can find something interesting a minute or two away. That has the effect that in ED, because it takes ages to find an asteroid, the disappointment when it's iron yet again is a lot bigger than finding something useless in NMS, where you know you'll see something else soon so finding stuff you don't care about is a much smaller deal. Also, if you find a POI from the air it doesn't vanish from your scanner the instant you approach the ground. Hint hint FD ;)

Actually, you know, simple things like having the details of the scan slowly appear as the scan is made (materials, atmosphere, mass, gravity etc) would make scans in ED far more bearable. Also, woul dbe nice if "TFC" would pop up once the scan is done, rather than having to go back into the system map to check the data on a planet. No reason this stuff can't just appear on the HUD, surely?

Z...

Cobra handles voxels just fine, based on Planet Coaster. Elite simply isn't using them, and I highly doubt that will change.

The voxels in NMS are HUGE, which is why they can have landscapes full of them without eating up all your memory. It probably wouldn't work too well with Elite's networking and level of detail.

My planet is full of underground caves, too, and nearly invisible holes you can fall through if you're not watching and wind up in some subterranean area. They've got some very cool procedural generation going on in there. After playing for a few hours, I'm liking NMS for what it is, a survival game with space travel. I think I would've enjoyed having more control of the ship, though. You don't really fly a ship in NMS, you ride in it and point it where you want to go. There's no skill involved. It's fun, and serves the purpose of NMS, but heck, I like flying ships!

Anyway, yeah, NMS is good for what it is. It's not an ED competitor, in my mind.

Ten hours into NMS (On PC) and just got to the Atlas. Good game, not great. Expansive, but limited in scope. I'm looking forward to playing again tomorrow. No CTD, no real lag, a few stutters. Quite happy with it so far. PC Specs in sig block.

Found a crashed ship while hunting for resources to fix initial broken ship. Was better than the starter so I jumped into it immediately. Once you get your exosuit storage sorted life gets a lot easier.

Combat is basic, but only M and KB for controls (Yes, I know there is a game pad, I don't use that.) Love the naming system. Have not run into another claimed system yet.

Engine could run smoother, but overall 8 / 10 so far IMHO. I took my time and explored in a very laid back manner.

Biggest and only issues so far is that I can't seem to alt tab from fullscreen without the game bugging out and then not being able to alt tab back in, also playing gog version and can't seem to figure out how to take a screenshots, using print screen and pasting in paint gives me a black image same thing if I use shareX to take a SS.

I just can't get myself to get the game. I love flying in Elite, and get the sense that it's very, very basic in NMS. It's really s first-person-resource-gathering game. Very little combat, and when it's there, it's over quickly. Simply walking around planets looking at weird wildlife and shooting static objects doesn't appeal. Maybe I'll take the plunge out of boredom one day, but I'm not sure. Now, when Elite introduces inhabited planets I can't see myself playing any other game for a very, very long time...

It's a fantasy exploration/chill out game so far for me....and I'm loving it.

Your right, that about sums it up at the moment. Just relax and explore or whatever. I have spent 4.5hrs down in a cave system that was beautiful. Went in with 170,000u came out with a huge amount of Plutonium to sell (good price too 4% above market average, nice earner). Went and found a second cave system, needed less time and got another great haul of plutonium, sold that too. Caves were full of the stuff.

The ship has 20 slots and the suit 21, cut to the bone to carry the Plutonium. The ship is a S66, can't remember the name of it. Nice little ship. Been looking at ships with 22 slots but they're pretty pricey, although I'm a Tycoon now according to the game (1.5mil units). That Plutonium and miles and miles of cave, heaven[praise]. Walked god knows how far. Great fun.

Flying is simplified, but its enough for the game, I think.

The PG is done really well, the planets and indeed, even better, the caves are incredible really.

Just a thought, when I'm in caves I take out those 'carbon' flowers (lights), makes it easier to keep a track of where you've been and not go around in circles. Darker caves have been done.. [yesnod]

17hrs in now. Still in my first system, it has 5 planets, four were great for exploration the 5th was great for units.. ;) Oh and exploration.. :)
I'll still be in this system after another 17hrs I reckon. Should move on, but can't miss out..

Ah, thanks for clarifying that. I've only seen Cobra in the context of ED, so I assumed it was not a voxel engine.

To get back from an ALT-TAB out I just click the game icon again, and it defaults to bringing the game up rather than complaining that it is already running.

Also, F12 is the default screenshot command for me, but this may be a Steam thing rather than a NMS command as it is not documented in the game.

That's a fair enough assessment - if one is looking for a spaceflight game, NMS is not it. I'm told that with better ships and upgrades the experience improves, but there is no HOTAS support. It's essentially focused on the planetary side of things.

Alt tab out.
Use Task Manager to "bring to the front" the application called "Application" (which is NMS) and that should fix your problem.

I'm playing the GOG version too. Good to see another GOG fan around here!

I know galaxy has a screenshot button, but I don't remember what that is off the top of my head. You need to check your settings, Its in there somewhere.

As for alt-tabing out of the game, I had the same problem. I needed to bring up task manager, and manually maximize the game. But once I did, it worked like a charm.

Danger comes in many forms. Fortunately fall damage is mostly a joke. :D
