Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

You can get HOTAS (Thrustmaster at least) to work with NMS using x360ce. It works quite well. There are profiles out there already. You MUST rename the xinput DLL that x360ce drops though to xinput9_1_0.dll.

I've heard that you can't bind a roll axis, though? If roll is only possible by holding a button, that's pretty much a killer.

If all the axes can be bound separately, I might be willing to try using a software solution to set it up.

The flight in NMS is so basic that a HOTAS would be completely useless. You can't crash, you can't yaw (only roll into yaw, as the two are connected), the ship auto levels, auto lands and is generally not fun to fly. Which is a shame, I must admit! Would have provided a nice added bit of depth to the game, and made space combat a bit more fun than it is :)

By the way, tip to all, don't go the completionist route like I did and grind out full inventory slots and ships on the first few planets, I'm now a little lost as to what to do :p Making my way towards the galaxy, trying to find a black hole to take a shortcut or two, but stuff is starting to seem a bit "samey" now.

Finally found a snowplanet though, looks nice! :D

Wow, that's even worse than I'd heard.

Oh, well. Too bad. I would have gladly given it a shot if it had good flight mechanics.

But still roll is not an analog axis.

A technical diletant who never flown any flying device or vechicle, in game or real, made a controls in NMS.

Someone at NeoGAF provides some insights into the game files:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1263009

We do know that NMS was a long time in development though which is supported by prototyping materials still in the final release done on PS3, 360 and Orbis (later PS4)

Assets from the E3 2015 demo are still in there and its contents hint at a rather scripted nature of the demo (which makes some sense)

PS: Big surprise, no mentions of Multiplayer could be found so far in any of the files or folders.

I'm glad someone posted the pics showing the upper limits of ship, multitool, and exosuit compartments.

Is there any info regarding synergy by placing upgrades together as discussed? Does it only apply to certain types of things or everything (ie the hyperdrive upgrades work better if placed next to a hyperdrive?

Regarding the compartments - I know for the exosuit it's just a matter of buying them, but does anyone know how you can have a better chance of finding a better crashed ship, for example? Is it 100% random or is it always scaled based on what you currently have? Do I have to basically go up bit by bit if I'm recovering ships? (until my exosuit is full I doubt I'll save enough money to buy a new ship past what I have).

I'm enjoying the game but not as a primary player. Instead my wife is captain and I'm her XO and engineer, advising her on courses of action but leaving gameplay primarily up to her (well, except pirates, she has trouble with those). The fact we kind of roleplay it out (I call her "sir" and talk to her over an imaginary radio ;) ) makes it more fun.

Question regarding pirates: how can you escape them? if I'm using pulse engines they disrupt it, and if I boost away they always seem to be on my tail. How can I go faster and get away (so Gill has that option instead of using me to fight).

With pirates. I sit still and spin around and shoot with the laser. It works well, just move occasionally. They do get harder they say, the more your rating goes up.

Edit: the flight model in NMS is basic, but its quite enjoyable flying around in space (no cargo ;)), just having a look at what hyperdrives in and out.

I think its better to see NMS as a 'walking simulator' game. If you enjoy just seeing the sights in games like Fallout 4, Far Cry etc rather than doing the quests NMS is kinda like that, but more varied and lo-fi. Its not a space-flight game where you happen to be able to land, space is just there to get to a different level.

It isn't even slightly interested in flight mechanics but it's still fun.

Or more likely: they decided that they didnt want analog controls because they would either have no point or be too difficult for the target audience. The idea is that the average person can pick the game up for the first time and instantly be good at it. They aim at 'casuals', and they seem to like it.

Pretty insightful, I will be sure to ask your opinion next time I'm looking at buying a game. Maybe think about starting a YouTube channel?

Yeah, "lol diz so crap rofl!!!!" is considered a quality review by some now.

Jim Sterling on poisonous hype around NMS (but it is damning critique about hype culture in gaming industry in general) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_HEI8ZfDbM

I liked the end where he says he is puzzled how so calm and relaxing game can create such furious fans :D

Worth A Buy Part 2

Whoa there ! Hold Your horses ! Am I hearing right ? Is this guy really praising ED ? The same guy that affirmed that ED was the WORST purchase of his life ?

And only NOW he finds good things in it ? Must not have been such a bad purchase now was it ?

And now I'm starting to believe that the guy reads the forums. He raised all the points that I asked for. Sure must be coincidental, but it feels weird nonetheless.[where is it]

I watched more videos of this guy jsut to make a good opinion of him, and my first impressions were confirmed, this guy must not be taken seriously, otherwise you will end up not buying anything. He literally hates EVERYTHING.

Just an example, ABZU a game that was praised by many critics, this guy founds it boring and lackluster. Dude what the hell ? Is this guy even a gamer ?

This is why I never make purchases based of reviewers. Their job is to review and entertain. And we humans, do like watching people and things getting taken down a notch.

planet creation is still amazing, no matter how many bad reviews it gets.

You can't really call Abzu a game for 'gamers', or even a good game. There's barely any gameplay to speak of. It was a relaxing experience, and styling is pretty good but he didn't say anything that isn't true about it. Also, it's stupendously overpriced.
He likes things, just not many of them :) I don't agree with some of his reviews, but he can be quite entertaining at times.

Nice. The game does provide us with some fantastic landscapes, skies, caves, underwater, space, life, plants... o.k. I'll stop. ;)

Storms are really great, on the frozen world I visited it was snowing when I arrived and then that turned into a full on blizzard. At least I think it was snow, it was white, could have been some alien nasty flakes of some type.
