Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

I'm still loving it, but what's driving me mad is the framerate tanking after playing for a couple of hours. This time it happened, I've ended up back in Elite...

I usually get the first 30 minutes at 24-30fps then it goes to 6fps on ship, 9-12fps on foot. Instead of going back to Elite, I'm considering getting a new computer. My wallet is already very afraid.

- All the plants and rocks pretty much look the same TRUE/FALSE?
- The Alien bases with yeloow aliens, repeating themselves (as evidenced i nthe video) TRUE/FALSE?
- The animals all look like they're stuck together from 100 different parts TRUE/FALSE?
- It's just constant mining to get stuff to go to another planet to get stuff to go to another planets to get stuff.... TRUE/FALSE?

- Mostly true, part of why my starting experience almost drove me away. But those 1 in 10 planets that look good, really do look good. That point is as they advertised, 1/10 planets awesome.
- This is true, but also true of a lot of other games of a similar type. All the NPC's in many games (assassins creed, even i Elite Dangerous) look similar and repeat.
- This is true if you look for it, but many of the animals look awesome, see: https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/4xrjtd/i_seen_this_majestic_creature_and_had_to/
- It's not constant mining, I've only mined what's needed, I've destroyed sentinels, scanned animals and bought a lot of needed materials from the market (quicker than finding many of the materials). They say it's constant mining because that's how you start, you have nothing and have to mine so I can see why you would get trapped in that cycle.

I suggest you wait. The PC port is a mess, there are memory leaks, poor shader caching, there's hardly any optimization at all. I suspect FPS will increase markedly in the coming weeks. Or else they wont get my money, there is no way the game should run so poorly for what you get in return.

Worth is relative. For me £40 is a Friday night out with the gang in the UK.

- Have I played NMS more than 6 hours ?
- Did I enjoy them 6 hours ?

Being as that's a yes to both then from my point of view anything over is a bargain. (Currently at 28 hours)

I use the age old measure - pint of beer and a tank of fuel - to gauge the relative cost of things large and small.

Viking, swap over the Recoil Stabiliser next to your scanners with the "Analysis Visor", that visor also counts towards your scanner bonus.

Thanks! Was hoping to find more bonuses on the suit, but the Jetpack is locked away in the corner, and the shield boosters and stamina enhancements don't actually stack with anything. Flying around on a nice planet now searching for manufacturing fascilities and operation centers, gaining recipes and hoping for an Atlas Pass v2 or v3!

He says it straight, with his own slant to it .. yes :)

(I find him funny to listen to even when he's talking .. though the overuse of that bell was quite annoying)

I thought the bell was spot on lol.

The game looks quite poor and shallow in my humble opinion. One thing I am impressed by is how lying and misleading folks with endless marketing campaigns creates for a sheep like following in the gaming community, where folks get thoroughly rinsed by unscrupulous duplicitous people like Murray and then start defending their behaviour.

There's likely some cool term for this but I prefer speak in language everyone can understand. Its a con. :D

Could be that playing Ark : Survival Evolved for a long while has given me a fairly high tolerance for poorly optimised games, but I reckon NMS runs pretty nicely :) Admittedly I just got a new PC, so anything else would be a little poor... so far no glitches or issues in 25 hours of play, everything from menus to gameplay elements to ship flight and walking around seems surprisingly polished for a game that has just been released!

Edit: I see that could be read as me saying ship flight is good - it isn't, it is far too simplistic for my taste, and although it does get a bit more fun in a Star Fox'y kinda way once your ship gets upgraded. However, for all its simplicity it works, there are no glitches and with an XBox controller it is very responsive (within its limitations).

So you're saying, in effect, that myself defending the game - because I enjoy it - means I am .. brainwashed ?

Managed to get it running myself with the xperimental patch and and an SSSE3 emulator, and this is pretty much my experience as well. A bizarrely poor port, most 'gameplay' being very poor, but as a trippy walking simulator its kinda fun (at least for now, +-3 hours in). I'd say it looks a bit like a 20-30 USD indie early access steam title, but am not sure if Subnautica isn't simply better at this point.

I started playing Subnautica again after I got the itch from seeing NMS out there. I hadn't played it for quite some time, wanting to get a good bunch of new content before diving back in. For one thing, they have made the game significantly harder for Survival mode. There are so many more thing trying to kill me...just last night as I was doing my best Michael Phelps out of the kelp forest, something must have bit my leg with poison because it nearly killed me...as I turned to look a shark came barreling in from my side and had a healthy lunch.

It is also much harder to build your seamoth...I used to get it going within an hour of starting...I'm now 5 hours into a new game, have collected the blueprints but still don't have a blueprint for the construction platform. Resources are more intelligently placed and it looks like there are now bigger rocks that can be mined (gonna need that exosuit!). Fish repopulate now, which is good. The game is looking great and should line up well to their Q4 release.

The survival mechanics are more in depth (than NMS) and have varied buffs and consequences. Subnautica also hits that sense of panic really well when you go deeper. Hard to say if the game is better wither having played NMS myself. From what I've seen, though, your activities and motivations are a lot more varied than in NMS. I'll head out on a mission to find some Magnesium and will get totally side-tracked by a found wreck, then chased out by a pack of piranha and then find myself hiding in a cave from a leviathan, hoping my air can last until it goes away.

No, if you have enjoyed it good for you..

Though this one is worth watching (some swearing in this vid):

Ah I see - you're having a pop at the fanbois (gleaned from watching the 2nd video).

Well, enjoy your popcorn ... there's plenty of them to keep you entertained.

EDIT:
To be fair the original comment you made that I quoted you on, if you were referring to fanbois, happens in all games - Take a look at our beloved ED .. there's some people here that if you so much as say a bad thing about it they're all over you. Same on the Blizzard forums that I frequent for Diablo 3 .. etc etc.

They . Are . Everywhere !

True but NMS has taken it to a whole new level that was previously thought not to exist :D

Not sure if posted here, yet.

Ars has a review

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/08/no-mans-sky-review-total-eclipse-of-the-galaxys-heart/#p3

[h=2]The good:[/h]
  • Procedural galaxy tech really does deliver a lot of beautiful, bustling sci-fi wonderlands
[h=2]The bad:[/h]
  • Weak combat and weaker upgrade paths hamper any hopes for fun action
  • Hints of a deep plot, but text is ultimately a bunch of ho-hum, one-dimensional poems
  • Crafting, dialogue, building-generation, and exploration systems suffer from redundancy and lack of payoff
  • Visual engine can't keep up with pace of flight, resulting in unsightly pop-in—even on high-end PCs
[h=2]The ugly:[/h]
  • A game so broken in its launch state that it even crashes while paused
Bottom line: Don't just wait for a sale; wait for a major overhaul.

Like his ED Horizons review where he claims its the worst expansion he's ever played, how it's copying Star Citizen and Horizons is all about greed.

Or say his Dark Souls one where he spends the entire video writing off the whole game, explaining how it's an awful game solely because the game's intended to be played with a joypad and he doesn't want to.

Actually I take it back, Steam reviews tend to be better quality.

Funny as I'm listening to that review and what you claim is entirely wrong. Horizons is a crap product.

As for DS - I thought his main gripe with the game was the constant roll out the way and attack then walk to the next boss - yeah, crap gameplay again.

How come you're making stuff up - perhaps you shoudl pay more attention and stop misrepresenting him?

Thanks :0

I'm going to keep an eye on it for now and wait until they sort out the frame rate issues and bug fixes and see what it's like in a month. reptitive game play is ok if it's fun game play though I have to say, the mining looks satisfying lol

One thing I've also noticed...there are no mirrors in the NMS universe!
