Riiight, they can retire tomorrow richer than 99.9% of the world having produced a pretty sweet video game that had a rocky launch.
I feel so sorry for them... NOT.
Depends on the marketing budget.

I will guess - they also use compute shaders to do surfaces of planets. As older cards doesn't support this drivers run them on CPUs instead. Welcome to slowdowns and crashes.
All this is public knowledge. Does Hello Games even have QA?
Though of creating a separate topic because CTD posts were lost in FPS stutter and tons of other issues.
Basically if your CPU doesn't support SSE 4.1, the game crashes to desktop. Nothing you do can launch it.
This means All AMD Phenom II CPUs and older Intel CPUs don't support this game.

All older CPUs.
I have AMD Phenom XII 1055T and GTX 1060. I can max out Witcher 3, Doom etc on 1080p. But this game won't even start.
So if you have such CPUs, DON'T BUY THE GAME ON PC till it's fixed.
EDIT:
SSE 4.1 support is the issue confirmed. I tried with SSE 4.1 emulator and game launched.
EDIT 2:
Minimum requirements only said i3. Nothing about SSE 4.1 instructions was mentioned.
AMD Phenom II 1055T beats the crap out of i3 530 in benchmarks:

It doesn't look like it, does it? They're such a tiny team though. For a project this large they really should have either hired more people or outsourced QA to another company.
If the revelations about multiplayer overshadowed the games release on the PS4 these technical issues have, if anything, been even worse for it. Frontier are probably breathing a big sigh of relief.
been playing for the last 2 hours.
It's....
it's...
it's not good guys. It really isn't. I'm gonna plow on in case it gets my interest but it's just....you can't even crash. i repeat, you CANNOT crash your ship. your ship will NOT touch the surface of the planet unless you initiate landing sequence.

For those that have the same crash as me and have a older AMD processor. Its a problem with the game only running on a SSE4.1. You can try using a emulator for it or it will never work unless the developers bring out a legacy build.
I just wait that i can finally refund my game on steam...still waiting on the buy confirmation from steam, in order to be able to.
I bought NMS on PS4 last night and spent a few hours on it today.
I'm not sure what I think of it yet but I suspect I won't be sticking with it for long. I like it, but it isn't a space sim.
AMD processors have SSE 4.1 just since 2011. So that change is pretty recent.I suspect they are using SSE4.1 instructions so I doubt it will get fixed. And in all honesty for someone not to have a CPU that doesn't support they must have pretty archaic hardware. SSE4.1 has been a thing for 10 years now .. Time to upgrade!

Why would you think it was a space sim? The description for it on their own website is:A SCIENCE-FICTION GAME SET IN AN INFINITE PROCEDURALLY GENERATED GALAXY

Yup, my feelings too, so far.
I am having fun, but it's not grabbed me yet. Just bumbling around my first planet was fun and I took my time exploring, the draw distances looked pretty good and some of the views were impressive. The (space) flight felt a bit rubbish compared to ED, so I'll need time to acclimatise... if I can... but in fairness to HG, FDev pretty much nailed ship handling.
Depite the reports on PC issues I have had none (zero, nada, zilch) so far after 3+ hours play, and on a not very powerful rig - FPS is fine, I've set it to 60 synched, and I've adjusted the FoV to 90. I'm not sure if relevant, but I got it from GOG not Steam, so I have no Steam client 'in the way'.
As an aside, on the assumption you can get the game to load, all the settings' changes I've seen suggested can be achieved through the relevant options in-game, no need for editing files.
Get a grip mate. :s
How's view distance comparing to PS4? Can it be changed? Curious.
Can't really say mate - I've not seen it first hand on a PS4, but from the videos I have seen, what I am getting seems better, to my mind at least - will try to post a relevant screeny!
I don't see any options for changing the draw-distance, but I've not looked. I'm finding their slightly wobbly menus a bit off-putting.
Edit: oh and less noticably popping... (so far!)
On the PC - do NOT press and hold multiple keys simultaneously - it kills the input system and suddenly the computer will accept no more keyboard input. I had to hit the actual physical reset button on my PC to get out. I haven't had to do that in a LONG time...
