Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

I really do believe Sony looked at Elite on the Xbox and said we NEED a space exploration style game and picked up on NMS and bought it out. If it wasn't for that I'm certain it would have been released as an Indie game at a more reasonable price point. People would still have complained about the missing features, but I think the price added to the hate considerably. (then again HG may have actually got some of those missing features out 1st time without the added pressure of fitting it in a PS4).

I can't see how that is the case. Sony got involved with HG sometime after VGX (Dec 2013) and demoed it at E3 (Jun 2014). Elite didn't release on PC until Dec 2014 and the Xbox preview version wasn't shown until E3 2015.

Did Sony buy them out? From what I've read they offered to provide development funding but HG only took financial assistance for marketing and publication.

Fair enough I didn't know the details of when Sony came onboard, that particular conspiracy theory of mine will be laid to rest. :)

There was a recent steam sale that had it down at "£23" I considered it to be worth a try at that point. It's still not great, but i'm not disappointed with the price I paid for it.

That was my original plan, I hardly ever buy a game full price nowadays due to circumstances. But once I realised NMS was primarily a SP planetary exploration game with a bit of crafting, survival and mining thrown in I went for it. Worth every penny in enjoyment for me.

I have well over 200hrs of pure enjoyment so far. I can see thousands more hrs over the coming years.
So HG, get the coffee in and settle in for the future. Well, that is what I'll be doing.. :p

I`m really not interested in survival mode but wow - the procedural generation looks so much better now, its almost like a different game. Also building bases if surprisingly polished for something made in a few weeks under a pressure hehe. Did we really get some wrong build at first? :S[big grin]

Question. If I want to move my home base to a new planet, do I have to destroy my current one first before I can find a new abandoned base?

Have there been changes to the PG?

Sony is the publisher of NMS on PlayStation, thats it.

The variation on the planets, and placement of resources, and the shapes of the resources pockets/pillars is massively improved, the vegetation looks way better - overall it looks less like a PG vomited all over the place and more like a believable environment :)

In fact, there was a lot of improvement in the game about it. Many other little things have changed for the better. It's another game. Beautiful and interesting.

I played a few hours in survival. It's very good for those who like it, but progress is much slower. Yesterday I decided to play my previous save in normal mode. It was the first time with the base building and its options. Surprisingly good !.

Hi there. Haven't played the game yet. Just seen a lot of game play videos. This might have been said before or even might sound silly but, doesn't the new base building system look like an exact copy-paste from Subnautica? I mean, Ive spotted strong similarities even from day one of release, but now with base building it looks like the same developer released two games using the same assets, one about space and one about sea.

It is indeed copy from Subnautica but this is a good thing IMO - they copy system that works and is fun, simple to use.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think I read you can easily de construct the old base for materials...god knows what the actual mechanic is though

Yup I wish the building in Fallout 4 was as easy as this, FO4s is a bit clunky IMO.

I probably go back playing some NMS too, never had any bad blood with it I enjoyed my time. Base Building and survivle mode don't interesst me much tough, well maybe basebuilding inside a Freighter but not on planets. Sure as hell wouldn't enjoyed my time with NMS sticking to just one planet :D

But I hear more updates are coming, so I probably wait a bit longer till even more got added and polished. It won't run away.

Cool, I had a run in with some doity stinky pirates and some Korvax fighters came and helped me out. :) Little touches are coming in. I can't help but think a delayed release with what we have now and a lot of angst would have been averted (not all of course).

My normal mode base is on a freighter, some of the text refers to a planetary base though...bit sloppy, but it technically works really good.

I just had my first go of NMS since Foundation dropped and wow... it's like a whole new game. I spent about 45 minutes continuing with my old standard save, then about 15 minutes in the Creative mode, and both are fantastic. The whole thing seems smoother, faster, less cluttered yet more informative, and the complexity of the landscapes has taken a huge leap forward. The fauna still falls far short of the pre-release demos -- more South Park than Jurassic Park -- but the overall aesthetic is great.

If the goal was to capture that Chris Foss-esque 1970s novel cover feeling, it's a definite win as far as I'm concerned. Version 1.0 had already achieved it to a certain degree, but Foundation is a massive improvement. Let's hope this isn't just a one-off based on existing code that wasn't ready for launch, but is indicative of the sort of incremental improvements that we can hope to see at regular intervals should NMS maintain a sufficient following. The community may never fully forgive SM for rolling with the excessive pre-release hype, but if HG can continue to push out updates of this quality perhaps the community can begin to put the past behind them and embrace what may turn out -- multiplayer notwithstanding -- to be something quite special in a very niche market.

I really loving the new resource placement and how it effects the mining. Its made it much more worthwhile now. Scanning, finding a seam of resources and then following that seam, is very rewarding.
Exploring and mining delivered really well, in NMS now.

very interesting, does that mean i will no longer need the 'Resources Underground' mod? Before in the default game pretty much 80% of the time the resources were in huge easy to get to towers, and the mod placed a large number of those into or under the ground so you would need to blow up the rock to get to them (or find them in the caves etc). Have they maybe looked to incorporate that mod into the base Foundation game now?

I seem to be spending more time looking around sinse the update, which is good. Resources on the planet I'm on are pretty hard to find, you know the tower type ones, not the usual plutonium etc, although they're also harder to find.
I go into caves more and scan, could do this on the surface, but its safer in caves, although there are more critters down in caves now. I scan and then look for seams of what I need or want. Its much better than before where everything seemed very easy to get hold of.

The exploring and mining got a lot more worthwhile, in-fact I'd say its excellent now, very rewarding.

Oh and yes, I don't see towers much on this planet, they seem to be more in-line with normal mining.

I playing in normal mode(now), I confess that I loved the missions given by NPC's to find materials. One more good reason to reinforce exploration. Very well done. I foresee the possibilities in this for the future of the game in terms of gameplay.
