VR is going to be like 3DTV, it's basically a gimmick, a cool gimmick at that, and one that can provide an interesting diversion, but ultimately it is too expensive (to buy and make games for) for the average gamer and will fade into obscurity over the next 5 years or so, as a mainstream gaming thing.
NMS has lots of issues (less than when it started overall, but a few new ones have arrived since then), but lack of VR is not one of them, imho.
There got the VR bug-bear of my back
Here are the biggest issues NMS has, off the top of my head (speaking as a fan of the game):
1.
Communication from the Devs. Just missed the target and was responsible for most of the backlash against the game. 'Radio Silence' has not helped since those days of media interest. Are they still enthused by the game, are they still working on it? It is nearly impossible to say without a reasonable level of communication from the Devs themselves. IF they are not still enthused by the game, why should i be? IF they are still into the game, then it would help me to know to fuel my own desire to keep playing, as new stuff and fixing stuff is on the way.
Knowing what the development path is ahead is good for players, and the devs!
2.
Price. At £59 most of the year, this is now too expensive. Sure you can wait for a sale, but the 'slightly curious' crowd are often not that patient, have plenty of CoD on hand, and this long after release a full reduction in price might help gain more players, so a 50% new full price. Those of us that paid the full whack have had a bunch of free updates (and probably more to come?) and will not feel bad about it.
3.
Game Design. Like with ED, half the time it feels as if the devs do not always fully understand the changes they make, and often go back and forth between various tweaks with each new update. With NMS it is perhaps more understandable, as they are a 'younger' team with less years in the field. But it is very frustrating from a player (and mod maker) perspective when you see a 'two steps forward, one step back' approach to game design.
I would love to see a 'stronger' game design hand from the NMS team (and for ED also!).

Those are my main areas of concern for NMS. If they can nail these issues down, there is still a very good chance than NMS can become one of those all time classic games that most people will want to own and play.
