Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Edit: I'm curious. Have you spent much time in VR?

Not long, but long enough (on a buddies PS4, and at an expo event) to not really 'get it'. If i want to make myself feel slightly nauseous or strain my eyes i can do that much more cheaply! 'Immersion' might mean something different to me though?

VR is going to be like 3DTV, it's basically a gimmick, a cool gimmick at that, and one that can provide an interesting diversion, but ultimately it is too expensive (to buy and make games for) for the average gamer and will fade into obscurity over the next 5 years or so, as a mainstream gaming thing.

LOL.

High-end VR can currently be had for $200 occassion, $399 new. When the next generation is released, you can cut that in three. Video cards able to play VR will be under $100 within two years. Make of note of your post and come back to it in a few years for a good laugh. :p

NMS has lots of issues (less than when it started overall, but a few new ones have arrived since then), but lack of VR is not one of them, imho.

There got the VR bug-bear of my back ;)

Here are the biggest issues NMS has, off the top of my head (speaking as a fan of the game):

1. Communication from the Devs. Just missed the target and was responsible for most of the backlash against the game. 'Radio Silence' has not helped since those days of media interest. Are they still enthused by the game, are they still working on it? It is nearly impossible to say without a reasonable level of communication from the Devs themselves. IF they are not still enthused by the game, why should i be? IF they are still into the game, then it would help me to know to fuel my own desire to keep playing, as new stuff and fixing stuff is on the way.

Knowing what the development path is ahead is good for players, and the devs!

2. Price. At £59 most of the year, this is now too expensive. Sure you can wait for a sale, but the 'slightly curious' crowd are often not that patient, have plenty of CoD on hand, and this long after release a full reduction in price might help gain more players, so a 50% new full price. Those of us that paid the full whack have had a bunch of free updates (and probably more to come?) and will not feel bad about it.

3. Game Design. Like with ED, half the time it feels as if the devs do not always fully understand the changes they make, and often go back and forth between various tweaks with each new update. With NMS it is perhaps more understandable, as they are a 'younger' team with less years in the field. But it is very frustrating from a player (and mod maker) perspective when you see a 'two steps forward, one step back' approach to game design.

I would love to see a 'stronger' game design hand from the NMS team (and for ED also!).

---------

Those are my main areas of concern for NMS. If they can nail these issues down, there is still a very good chance than NMS can become one of those all time classic games that most people will want to own and play.

Seems like you have never used VR. Comparing it to 3D tv is laughable. I do not play any other types of game due to VR because it is that good.

I actually said VR might have saved NMS, I didn't say that lack of it in the game was an issue.

Given the graphic design and game mechanic(s) VR, in my opinion, could have sold the game out of the commercial and entertainment abyss it fell into almost immediately after launch.

As for the longevity of VR generally? I am withholding judgment on that....

Please hold me to account. I gave it 5 years as a general number, could be less, could be a bit more depending on how much investment is poured into it (which spins out to marketing and game dev etc). Nothing about VR would improve the underlying flaws in NMS (or any game).

So, is there any news (or hints) on what might be coming next from the lovely people in HG?

Pretty please let it be a decent flight model allowing for a meaningful HOTAS set-up.

...and engineers........ :x

The HOTAS situation is complicated by the PS4 compatibility issue (i think......although ED manages to do it fine on controller for Xbox etc?), and to be honest it just needs decent regular mouse and keyboard flight controls/feedback/feel first.

As for news, you have to be joking right? This is NMS and Hello Games, the last expansion was hinted at first by a month long weird alternate reality game, rather than a regular information dump. So er....don't hold your breath!

Picked up NMS again after a few months break and can't put it down. Having a great time in survival-mode! I'm actually a bit sad knowing many players won't come back to it after the disasterous launch.

Having tried VR on a Rift and got over some initial feelings of nausea, I haven't played ED since without the Rift. I agree graphically its not perfect, but the experience is amazing for games that utilise it properly. I cannot see it being a passing fad. What I think will happen is that eventually it will be more like wearing glasses.

I think we would have still had the backlash, or a large part of it, as most people complained about features and the look of the game not being what they were expecting. And following on from all that, i doubt we would have got the 3 main free updates so far, most likely they would have needed to be paid, and the back-lash would have increased. In short i think IF they had released it as a £15 game NMS would have died.

It is fine if you feel that is what it is worth to yourself off course :) I'm happy with what it cost, and even if i stopped playing for about the last 6-7 months, i'm kind of happy it made them enough money they could make it what it is today.

One of the big reasons for my taking a break was that even after the Foundation Update my gaming machine was struggling with the game, my GTX 750 Ti was just not powerful enough, especially as i ran with numerous mods.

So Santa got me a 1050 Ti and now i'm seeing a near 100% improvement in fps (from 20-40 upto 40-60 (i cap it at 60)fps) with High details etc.

I'm just waiting for the mythical 1.4 update before i start again, or maybe i'll just get back with 1.3 as i did not really give it a decent try.

What's 1.4 supposed to bring?

It's £15.99 in the Steam sale which is about what it should have cost when it was released.

In my opinion the Steam Summer Sale price is still too high (at least for me).

I've had a chance to play NMS on a friend's PS4 and, quite frankly, as nice as the game looks I woldn't get a copy for the PC unless it was 75% discounted (which probably isn't going to happen in the current sale).

I don't get that kind of reasoning. It's either worth playing, or it's not.

I was back in NMS the other day. Still a great joy to explore and wander.
But now, I feel I have to do survival again for a while. Last time I tried, I did o.k. but it didn't last long until a got too low on something or other and died. Think I'll have to try again soon.
Survival is pretty 'full on' in NMS. ;)
Overall great game.

We're talking about NMS, so no-one outside of Sean Murray's mind knows ;) They used to communicate a lot, but well that did not end well (for all manner of reasons), so now they don't talk, they just do. Kinda yoda like :)

I spoke to SM, he said "Coming soon or ever 1.4 is to you not known. Content, hmmm, ahead of yourself do you get."

Honest.
