Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

The game's dead, it's official.... :D
Not sure I would agree with finding that funny. I think its more sad than anything.

I think NEXT probably piqued people's interest for a while before they realised there just wasn't enough new content to sustain long-term play. If I could play it with better performance than I currently could I might have spent a week or two on it but there was no reason to do anything. It's not that I dislike sandboxes per se, and I appreciated their efforts to include some kind of mission giver but they were so uninspired and boring as to evoke a coma response in me.

Nice bit of NMS 'emergent gameplay' here. YouTubers CobraTV & SemtexUK have created a PvP arena on a planet and are streaming tournaments.

(Skip through the slightly cheesy intro to see the match) The arena's impressive, built on the flat top of one of those huge rock monolith structures.

I found a paradise planet, haven't had time to look around yet, but first bit looks o.k.

Don't think I'll make it home though.

Edit: just out of interest, I think some of the older planets were more lush and of a paradise setting. (this from 2016)

Steam concurrent players just broke through the floor of 10,000 since Next release: https://steamcharts.com/app/275850

Thing about steam is that it only really represents pc players...it doesnt count console players at all. Point to note that every single one of my friends who were playing elite a couple months ago...all but one are now playing NMS with the other playing Forza. Effectively it means that if I come back to elite, Ill be completely devoid of friends who play...yippee!

Almost a hundred hours in with the hardcore setting and still going strong...started the ironman setting and had 5 deaths before finally getting off the first planet. I dont recommend that setting if ye dont have the patience of a saint...it is not without difficulty as I still cant get to the point where I win my own freighter in ironman mode.

Just one issue thats been bugging me (not a bug)...I bought an A class shuttle last week but I cant get it onto the freighter like my other ships. Storing my fighter and explorer and hauler is straightforward enough but that damned shuttle just wont go where its supposed to go and is currently marooned several systems away. Would like to have it more readliy available as Ive sunk a fair few resources and S class upgrades onto it.

Also the base module that acts as a huge storage unit...how do I use it? Theres close to 10k carbon stored in it but I cant get it out or use it...fairly certain I can put stuff in but not out again...bit like putting yer shiny in a safe then locking it not knowing the combination...vexing.

Apart from that, its improving but yesterdays patch has messed up the lod loading times when entering planet atmosphere...doesnt look worse just causes some clipping where it was fairly smooth before.

Still dont have a save in creative mode...I find I appreciate my base building efforts more when one has to work fer them as opposed to having all resources and never having to farm or progress...its too easy basically ^

A bit early yet to tell. The dramatic concurrency drop we are seeing is just normal and part of release business. Most releases. A few thousand players concurrency average in Steam long term would be a very decent result, especially given PC is not the only platform. Still too early to tell. It is going to depend on how HG supports the game going forward.

Thing about steam is that it only really represents pc players...it doesnt count console players at all.

Oh fully agree. Steam happens to be the only source of data readily available. The actual total concurrency numbers, accross all platforms, we will not know. But the message the Steam data is showing is that it is also probably safe to say that other platforms are seeing similar drops. These drops, by the way, are perfectly normal and to be expected right after a release. Nothing wrong with that. The key thing to watch is the concurrency once it stabilizes, medium/long term, possibly in a few months from now. If HG releases a new large patch in that time all bets are off obviously.

I think it's completely normal for a Buy2Play game, which got an expansion. Steam (and PC in general) is a F2P and card trading platform first and foremost.

It was an (attempted) joke, by alluding to the number of such threads seen in the main ED forum, where it's imminent demise is 'confirmed' by numbers much lower than 10K.

As a serious aside, I would expect the percentage of owners on consoles to be higher for NMS than ED, but I've nothing other than a hunch to back that up. Whereas Steam probably represents the majority of PC owners for NMS, unlike ED. Again, just a hunch.

Yeah, after following it from start, I can certainly say it has a much larger playerbase on Playstation than pc. Xbox as we know just arrived so that might change things, but PS have all sorts of groups going on.
It is such a shame we can't all enjoy cross platform play, but whereas we might get pc playing cross with xbox, I don't suppose they'll be much chance of tapping into the larger playerbase on PS.
:(

Sorry but that is a total misunderstanding of the position regarding Steam. Some titles can only be purchased (and played) on Steam for PCs - Planet Coaster and JWE are examples of products from Frontier that can only be played via Steam for PC. There are countless (well I am not going to try to count them) other games only available to PC users via Steam. So it is by no stretch of the imagination a card-trading and F2P platform and your inclusion of "and PC in general" with that is just inexplicable.

After the 1.57 patch yesterday I got some clipping in stations, when I'm on the balcony looking over the landingpads a big brown plate appears over the entire landing bay, reloading the game solves it usually.

I've started a Creative save yesterday, it's a bit boring but good for trying things out.
I want to build my first bigger base in Normal but trying some things out first in Creative is quite convenient.

I keep imaginging creative mode to what godmode was like in gta5 back when the money hacks meant ye had billions and access to everything...it just got boring real fast cos it was too easy. Im still fairly old skool in that I mostly choose not to use anything that makes the game easier...Im sorta sick and twisted and enjoy making mistakes and learning the hard way, so I have been sorta avoiding that, even though it would be useful...Im just not built like that.

I gotta laugh now at my first efforts when I thought a big wooden box like mass built underground with odd stuff going on like a mole with adhd was cool...but things have moved on a bit from those heady days when I thought that was cool...Ive really missed base building mechanics and this one is just as complex Im finding.

Ambitions have moved on somewhat...I got the ideal planet, heavy radiation and extreme heat storms...ye ok so Im weird cos I prefer extreme planets and weird things...but watching a heat storm sunset against the backdrop of a huge ringed elw and ye can just make out the outline of the freighter parked up in close orbit...if ye look sorta sideways at the screen anyway.

Oh and 90% of the base is underwater including the extensive farming facility, all non profit of course and serving the finest medicinal (haha ye right whatever)

Im actually not on any NMS forums or pages or whatever...I only know it was updated cos it was a 5.2g download which takes a good ten minutes which was enough time to make a comment on another thread here.

With my mouth? Probably a good thing when I think about it ^

People buying these B2P games on Steam are a minority. The vast majority of Steam accounts have less than a dozen games registered on them with most of them being free to play.

Only 1 percent the audience spends a substantial amount of money on B2P games. The majority of Valve's revenue is due to card trading and F2P micro-transactions.

We were discussing concurrent players and by player numbers it is a F2P platform. B2P is a niche on Steam, there is no doubt about this.

Well of course I am happy to be corrected since I only speak from a user's point of view. I would be amazed if as you say the "majority of Valve's revenue is due to card trading and F2P micro-transactions" and would be happy to read where that is shown. The article you link to is not at all supportive of your assertion, it basically says that a games developer using Steam is "fighting for the attention of 1.3 million gamers that are actually buying lots of games". So if you want to show your evidence, by all means do, but to be honest it doesn't bother me that much.

Looked at a few mods, not many, but this one struck me as being quite good.

'Metal Spaceships by Redmas'

Second video shows the old look.

Case of decide for yourself. I quite like it. [smile]

So, Space... [yesnod]

Black Space mod by Lo2k to be exact.

In this video, he has 3 types of space:
1; Darker Space
2; Darker Space with Nebula
3; Black Space.

Read the description too, I've put something about my, not so great recording abilities, explains a little. ;)

Black Space mod by Lo2k..

Black space reminds me of the way I play Space Engineers a lot, with no skybox, looks more realistic without stars for me, just plenty of asteroids and dust and what have you..
Just wish we were further away from the planets when we jump into a system, instead of on top of them. Would like them to be just specs, in the distance. Much more realistic, I think.

credits received:

'No Man’s Sky raked in $24 million last month':

https://www.onmsft.com/news/no-mans...onth-and-fortnite-may-finally-be-slowing-down

Not too shabby for a small dev!

I hope that has given HG even more enthusiasm to continue.

I see data mined info on 'Food' has been found too. I wonder if that will come sometime. That would really round the survival aspect off. ;)

Just got to get those planets further away from us when we jump into a system. Then we are talking more 'space' sim style, not just the emphasis on planets. That would be great.
But I dare say a mod might appear that will enable that, at least for pc players.

Edit: Last for now.. Mod 'Distance large Asteroid' by 'tinfoilhathead'

Just makes the large asteroids spawn in much further away from your ship. This gives the space, more depth, I feel anyway. I also change the background to 'Darker Space with Nebula' later into the video. Then they're bloody hard to find....
Not sure if there are small asteroids or fields, didn't find any, but wasn't in long.
Good mod.

I'm still playing this. It's starting to die down to a more normal level, though, lol. I've got a lot of cash now, and plenty of resources. All my frigates have leveled up to A class. My farm is bigger. I've passed the struggling stage, a while ago. Now it's time to decide what to do next, I guess :)

Here's my base now -- you can see the expanded farm in the back now.

My smallest ship. It has more room inside than outside, I think :)

Just a pretty pic:

I named this planet "Jumanji". Might make an additional base here.

I'd even have my own private swimming hole:

Not sure about the neighbors, though:

PS the Nomad is really fun to drive!
