Much like what was recently done for Operation Flashpoint. Instead of calling it Operation Flashpoint 2 it's called Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, and it's largely because the original was so long ago a lot of people won't remember it.

I'm pretty sure Operation Flashpoint dropped the number '2' because although Codemasters had the rights to the name, they didn't have the rights to make the sequel. (It's a great game by the way, I'm really enjoying it at the moment).

But I agree with you, dropping the numbers is a good thing. Star Wars (original trilogy), Indiana Jones, James Bond, all good examples.

...and of course "The Madness of King George III" had to be renamed in case people thought they had missed the first two insalments!
But I agree Elite IV was never more than a working title (just as it's predecessors were FE2 and FFE). Maybe Elite: A New Millennium??

Well initially yes, as in Second Life, but is it possible to imagine a time when one could get a job managing a virtual spacestation? A bit like one can get a job managing servers for a large company. It would depend how complex (maybe how 'open' to peoples ideas) a virtual spacestation could be. Maybe if it was linked to facebook - or even ebay each one could become incredibly complex if allowed to develop 'free-form'. A bit like evolution at work.

I could really see games of elite's ilk going in that direction... less a game, but a truely immersive environment where you can live an alternate existence to the extent where real money can be earned. Though, what happens to the economy if everyone wants to be a pirate? arr?;)

Not everyone would want to be. In fact, if done properly more people would probably want to be pilots in the military or police as they can shoot things up without risking prosecution!

In the more anarchic regions of course pirate gangs, guerrilla armies etc may become THE LAW so to speak - until the federation/empire/hive world hegemony decides to take over - or forge an alliance.

Too Much?

I get the feeling people want too much crammed into the game.
When I play a game, I want it to be fun. Not burdened down
with overly complicated game play. Remember KISS.

So far DB has indicated there may be two parts to this game.
A Single player game, And Multi player. You would still want
some sort of consistency between the two.
Making the multi player too big may break that.

......yes
though I guess I was hoping this millennium not the next!
[note to self: add to "things that would prevent you buying E4", by then my age-related macular degeneration that would stop me seeing the screen (or by then, holo-plasma)]

No ocular problem that the EyeTron 9000 implant can't solve!

Of course :D

Is there a discount if I pre-order them with the HepaMagic 400 ("washes away those cirrhosis blues") and the EziFit "Intel inside" NeoCortex?

Though I might pass on the skin stretcher from Star Trek Insurrection...

is that true?! thats the greatest thing i've heard in the whole of today! :D

I would recommend that the game starts off as quite a simple affair, with the ability for it to expand over time. I don't think it should necessarily be designed in a complex way, rather that peoples interactions should allow complexity to emerge.

Absolutely. I think this would also be a good way to implement anti-piracy without horrific concepts like DRMs too.

Example:
If a small monthly fee is paid ($5?) then the user is able to download monthly updates which could include new missions, new factions, new universal events, new technologies etc.

In that way, people who always pirate games will still do so, but will be so bowled by the game's awesomeness that they will want to pay to recieve the updates.

Not entirely sure to be honest. I know when I was there it was "Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising" for a long long time, then when they came to re-design the logo they dropped the 2 (there were so many debates about it). Seems a little silly to have rights to the game, but not the sequel!
