Using Kinect doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have a controller, something like this may work well:

steel-battalion-controller-2.jpg

Note this is a personal wish, not an official statement from the company :)

Michael

Although, funnily enough there is a new version of that game coming out on Kinect that is controller free! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGh7LBjcnsE&has_verified=1

But I agree, I'd like to see Kinect enhance the way we play, not change it completely. Somebody mentioned physically pointing to a target - that's a great idea. Kinect has facial recognition too, so maybe, if you've annoyed a merchant but need to go back to him, you could literally go in disguise, or get a friend to go buy stuff from him.

If they were going to go down the Steel Battalion route then its going to have to be the fanboy special, special edition of the game. (price no option):D
If they can get interface right on Steel Battalion,it could be the killer game for Kinect as I think Kinect tracks the players whole body movement?

Back to Elite
Having voice command on the consoles would do away with the need to have the joypad button used for multiple commands and free the joypad for control of the ship and control of the player avatar if you can get out of the cockpit.

Boy that facial recognition could have some intresting possibilities, spend too much time being a pirate and you could be recognised maybe even see your own face on wanted poster within the game.

Wenn I think of space game I think of piloting a bit my self. And espacialy in a space fighter I think there is nothing better then a quality joystick.

Perspective correctness by head tracking is nice but only works for one viewer or gamer. Make only sense if you and your joystick and trothle are serounded by multimonitors in place where the fighter canopy is.

Mouse Keyboard would work if your not the Pilot but have a Tom Paris kind of NPC on your bridge on your corvette and deligate actions to NPC.
Your monitor represent bridge windows. And or Main and secondairy sensor screens.

This can be done with PC but console doesn't support multimon and HID support is restricted by MS or Sony or [N]. On PC it's open.
Also you could use beside Mouse keyb Joystick trothle. A Tablet miniPC as a HID. As a pure interface client and many more PC working as terminals showing as observer a specific window or sensor screen.

I can't imagine what kinect would be of use with this space game genre..

Forza 3 running on console, on 3 screens - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX1k_BzizIQ

(you need 3 XBoxes to do it, but that's still cheaper than a decent PC).

Plus, you'll also see from that video that peripherals aren't a problem for consoles either.

With Forza 4 having Kinect support, you can still have all of the above, and head tracking and voice command and facial recognition.

To say something 'can't be done' or 'wouldn't be any use' is a bit defeatist and pessimistic in my opinion.

Having a good team of designers and technical staff - which Frontier have plenty of - encourages me to think they'll do a great job harnessing this new freedom Kinect opens up. I'm not suggesting Elite IV only work on Kinect, I think they can use all the technology available to enhance aspects of the game. For instance - some people might think Joysticks are a waste of time, but you wouldn't want Frontier to drop support for it.

Can't be done with a consoles. One that is. That it can with a lot of them is something else.

We got 4 PS3 but no room for such setup.

maybe not this gen but if the technology take off then the next gen of console will all have it and it will be interesting to see what Nintendo will do, I think a Mario game using a kinect interface would work very well.

I don't think so. Defauld use of a console is a TV. The stand mostly alone.
Offering a Graphics backend with two output's means making it a tad more expensive for a small niche market.
Might be that the chip get it. But on the mobo it would not put to use.

Like PC G-card there are 6 head versions and 3 head and 2 head versions.

I think such complex games like Elite and X-series do well with multimon.

ciao Geraldine, I don't know you.. but why your avatar does kill me with nostalgia everytime i look upon it? :)

My opinion on the topic of this tread.

I do believe Frontier is working hard on outsider. But so far as I know it's a different kind of game then Elite, a other genre. It's just one of the many other games that got much more priority over Elite wich is abadoned for decade. That very long in game bussness.
As other pump out Fps sequels around 1 or 3 years.

So what frontier axual did is left us fans of Elite and it's genre in the cold for very long, doing other stuff.

And a promis that they will pick up Elite 4 while we could have had Elite 7 already if the stoud behind the franchise 100%. Games can get canned far into production. And a promise doesn't mean they would deliver. And because the doing other stuff before it. The have to do the full development cycle so if go for it begin 2011 if they rush it it might be 2013 or if they take there time to make something good and that need time and lot more investment money 2013+ would be realistic. And a promise means nothing like press releases about nothing there. The time to make something public would be if they had something in alfa stage. With a full production team behind it.
And it's time they go for feature feedback to the community to make it some richer. around that time it make sense to offer screen shot and give soem publicity.

I do mind that they abbandond the genre and I favor studio's who didn't do that like Egosoft.
Like i do also mind that derek smart abandoned his capitalship genre.

I wonder Why? Is this genre bad bussnes to invest in? Is the FPS crowed so much larger. Is it percived as lot risky. As a niche genre. Frontier isn't the only one that abandoned this genre. But the only just made a promise they pick it up again. Wich doesn't mean much in the bussness. Until they reach feature freeze then I get excited. But if it got to be MMO I'am out.

It's not clear what egosoft are upto.

Well I comfort my mind with this. Altho it take many years before we might see Elite4. But the upside is mainstream hardware will be yet again a whole lotta powerfull then now.
And there might be nextgen console out there and it could be one of the second wave games.
Altho due to crisis a lot of games got canned or put in the freezer. But there are still a whole lot of FPS games released. While space flight genre is crawlin.

I't just sad.

patience friends, patience
i guess, after all, if i would stand behind such a project, well i would take my time to.
i'm thinking about especially what everybody likes to see in a E4.
if i would like to put this all into a game, truely i would wait a little while to.
since i'm working on pioneers models, a lot of suggestions have been made what could be implemented to it.
once i answered simply, it would exceed the limits of pioneer, further it would exceed the limits of our machines, or at least of a lot of players, not everybody owns the latest crap that is available on the market (me, i.e.).
further it is to think about a additional release on a console, but which and it has to be capeable of the same as the PC. a wii won't fit since big N using hardware sounds and textures still and a reason why their games look just like some updated Super Nintendo, games that made out of the box, their hasn't changed much, just as a example (i took Metroid as reference).
usually consoles allow more powerful games, but do there is one fitting elite4,
is it spread widely enough to catch a anyway small community?

elite4 won't be the top seller i guess, even when it will be outstanding.

the answer to wait until some level of technology is achieved, seemed first suspicious to me. but after wise thinking, ok, it doesn't mean the top level, more what is standart, what is the intermediate user using for a machine, or even OS (windows is NOT the only one).

if i look at the community here or at SSC what machines they are using it ranges from 10years old to top level newest.
but since, like i stated before, there is a not so wide range of gamers that would buy the game after all, a fact that has to be respected, don't you think so?

so let's have really a little patience until a certain level is standart, then a E4 in a shape like we all like to see it, comes in range of getting released.

i'm not a MMO player, but that wouldn't mean i'm out if E4 became one.
you see, choices are extremely different when it comes to that.

i guess, folks, you have to take this as a real opportunity.

well, if i think what i have dreamed of before i ever knew there was a elite at all
it was MMO (completely out of range of possibilities then, but i said, dreamed of)

how did it came to this dream?

ok, i was roundabout 16 then, owning my "crappy" inty, and i loved any space related game.
but something i also liked much was games that you can play with a friend (or more), a reason why sports games and strategy was allways on the list to.
further i had a book, in which was lined up what we have to expect from future (back in mid 80's), web and MMO games, all was roughly drawed then allready or to imagine at least.
the rest was dreaming...

god, i wished people (family, friends or foes?) would have encouraged me then instead of telling me that i'm to late (lol, now) or wouldn't have the right graduation (maths wasn't my best, but it took me years to find out that to understand math and 1x1 is not the same. i can freely say now, all of my classmates beeing considered as good in math because of 1x1, wouldn't understand half of what i'm now, or what i'm able to. school is .....(any rude expression) in some sort when it comes to that).

i know i should have be more convinced about my strengths, hey i could fascinate my teacher with my explanations to physics, he could stand there for a hour listening and not interrupting my once. but there was allways this... "if you don't get better in 1x1 then..." stupid in my opinion.

you have to know, where i grew up sports and 1x1 was the most important (and it's stupidly still), if you was good in both you could have anything, if not...

in other words, a stupid functioning robot has much more chances rather a constructive minded one.
we have alot of wonderful toys today, but somewhat still live in stoneage, mainly because of such.
people here run after sombody that can earn a lot of money only because of the fact that he earns a lot...
isn't that stupid? does that mean someones a good leader because he's able to make a lot of money?
kids blowing up themselfes in front of me, "you will never get far because i'm swiss (having this and that name) and you're not". first i was getting allways very angry, later i just resignate.

ha, i would like to see one of them, writing such in english, never have been teached one word in school!
