The Open v Solo v Groups thread

"Well the need for traders to be protected is there"

Getting a group together is hard to do and probably impossible for some, and I believe that the game works against effective merchants and escorts travelling together. IIRC a merchant can be attacked and destroyed a lot of the time before the escorts arrive. If they do arrive, it is easy for the raider to get away. Flying as escort would be a grind and achieve little.

If a group does manage to travel together, the raider can seek weaker prey. Or round up a couple of like minded CMDRs and overwhelm the escorts, or at least enough to kill the merchant.
Yeah, a fun challenge for the players to work through.

A lot of things are PvP and 'exciting' is wholly subjective.

Organic PvP always involves some element of uncertainty, some illusion or pretense of risk. CQC has no element of risk other than perhaps failing to find enough victims to unlock one's permit as rapidly as one might hope. Matches are often devoid of meaningful uncertainty as well, skewed so far in one direction or another as to make the outcome a foregone conclusion. Back when I was playing CQC semi-regularly, I could tell the outcome of almost every match I was in just by pressing tab and noting who was still around fifteen seconds in.

This was not an atypical CQC match:

That video is 41 minutes long and I was excited for a grand total of maybe one minute (mostly around that ten-minute mark) while recording it.

I'm excited the entire time I'm in the presence of potentially hostile CMDRs in Open.

Only when trading...because shields have an uneconomical cargo vs. protection trade off vs. hull-based defenses. I can cram more than 700 tons of cargo into a T-9 with 5k hull integrity, adequate module protection, and solid countermeasures...or I can barely manage 600 tons in one with token shielding that isn't actually any safer.

Well, yes. I suppose if i stalk a player out exploring and then nab an earthlike world that's in their path before they can, its also a form of PvP.

Indeed. Good thing the current state of the game is not the arbiter of how things should be, or balance changes and new content would never be a thing.
While it may not limit how things may develop, it may indicate what Frontier want to offer.

Removing players' ability to affect existing content from two of the three game modes does not qualify as "new content".

The game is fine as it is. FDev seems to think so also. If someone don't like the game as it is perhaps it is time to play something else?
If they adopted this thinking the game would've died years ago. The game is good, but has potential to be better. Fdev obviously agree or they wouldn't keep updating it with new things.

This. It's a great game; I'm completely happy with it except that I'd like more bug fixes and UI improvements. I think we can lose sight of this in long discussions.
Honestly this is probably a major crux of the issue. You're happy with it as is, and while I like it a lot, I want to see it continue to get fleshed out, grow, and become more dynamic.

Also SC is open only, no blocking, no log off timer... Are you saying you would prefer this for ED?
Yes but with the accountability SC offers. Your flagged as a murderer, once your out of Grim hex your fair game to any passing player(s). And you can track em via bounty mission which is linked directly to the offender.
Trust me once your flagged in SC your days are numbered. In fact once your out of grim hex or any other enclave your minute by minute hehe. Course this only really applys to Stanton. PYRO is perhaps a different story.

I like the idea of Open-only Powerplay.

It would lead to awesome interactions like going to Winiama, while pledged to Mahon, to pick up the rewards of participating in the CG, on Mahon's side, and get killed while exiting the station, by a commander pledged to Mahon.

I'll be honest, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to PP, so I don't completely understand the logic behind the whole thing, but it was great, really. Very dynamic.

🤣
