If you are in debt here in the UAE and you can't pay then under Sharia Law you are imprisoned until such time that you pay off your debts. All perfectly reasonable to the local people here but preposterous to Western thinking.

How do you make money in prison? Or is that why it seems preposterous?

Exactly .. that's why to us it seems ridiculous to Westerners - how can you pay your debts if you're locked up and can't work ?

(The answer lies in your friends and family .. which here they revere and in the West we dump into OAP homes )

I think we are talking about the choices made by the fictional characters in a fictional universe 1200 years in the future.

SERIOUS BUSINESS! :)

Acutally, I just read the story that OP posted last night. I thought it was a good read, and really it's about how I expected slavery to work in at least some parts of the Elite universe. We're talking a lot about voluntary servitude in the Empire but naturally there are going to be cases (like in the OP story) where slaves are treated like, well....slaves. The Elite universe is vast and if something is illegal in the system you're in all you have to do is travel a few systems over and you'll find yourself in a totally different moral/legal framework. Travel even further out into unexplored space and you truly are your own master. Do we really think that a universe like this, in which slavery is tolerated and even embraced by selected pockets of civilization, would not have things like that going on? Of course it would. Human nature won't change that drastically by 3300.

But of course this is all fiction.

It's been fun watching the twists and turns of this thread, the pro vs anti slavery debate, the Imperial propaganda and the political debate.

Since my main character is with the Federation, that puts me in the No camp.

From a personal point of view, I'm fine with the solitude. Even if I created alternate characters with different allegiances and points of view, I might still say No on pragmatic grounds. With most professions in the game, you won't be too far from a station most of the time, and I'm sure they'll have establishments to 'service' your needs. The only profession that you'll be gone from human contact for a long time is explorer, and isn't the point of heading off into the void to get away from people?

As for all the 'mighty Imperial Bounty Hunters' with all their big talk, bring it on. I look forward to meeting you in game and sneaking a ship load of contraband past you whilst you're getting busy with your slave;)

We're a skilled bunch. Who says we can't multi-task? :D

.

that is how it was in england, a century or so back......

That's the point, it all works out the same in the end... no side is presented as the good guys, they just screw over the have nots in slightly different ways.

That's why people earnestly fighting the corner of one or the other are being unintentionally hilarious. They're arguing over technicalities.

It could be that those of us arguing the corner of some faction are simple minded morons unable to grasp how 'unintentionally hilarious' we are to those vastly superior smirking intellectuals out there.

OR, we could be passing the time adding some depth to some evolving fiction and engaging escapism and while making the point that exactly how we do things in modern day western opinion does not necessarily have to be last word on morality.

Perhaps when the superior types have finished laughing at us they could let us all know.

It all depends on your viewpoint.

Neither is right or wrong ...

We did the same thing here in the UK up until the beginning of the 19th Century. In fact debt was the only thing you could be imprisoned for, for everything else it was transportation or hanging - or more often than not, never getting caught as we had no police force at the time. Also, if you could recite a certain passage from the Bible you'd get an automatic pardon for any crime. But not debt. They called that law the Benefit of the Clergy.

We stopped that about 40 years after outlawing indentured servitude (the closest thing the Empire's slavery in ED) and a couple of decades or so before outlawing slavery and taking to the seas to stop other countries doing it (as some non-Imperial players are planning on doing here).

(I just failed my Resist Blather On About History roll)

So .. saying "slavery" is wrong is not the full story .. It depends where you are in the galaxy and who the slave is.

And the same goes for saying slavery (or indentured servitude) is right. It's a nice point of conflict in the ED background, and hopefully Frontier will make something of it in mission generation.

Cool but i will be getting it on with Amber after dispatching you :p

Seems to me most people here in the forums will be on the Imperial side? Then even more reason to choose another side for me. No fun when everyone is your friend. :p

I had always got the impression that most people would go Federation. But since it seems to be 20% Empire to 14% Federation I guess most of us are off an age to see through all the that goes with ‘democracy’ and fancied roleplaying something else. Besides there for me were 4 main reasons to go Empire.

1) Slave girls
2) No one on Achenor ever voted for Barry’O or Gormless Clown or iDave.
3) Imperial ranks are eleventy times cooler than Federal ones:
Federation / Empire
None / Outsider
Private / Serf
Corporal / Master
Sergeant / Sir
Sgt-Major / Squire
Major / Lord
Colonel / Baron
Lieutenant / Viscount
Lt. Commander / Count
Captain / Earl
Commodore / Marquis
Rear Admiral / Duke
Admiral / Prince
4) Slave girls

Perhaps the Imps are merely the most vocal?

Na! most will play independently, at least to start with, agree Imps are more vocal but there are a few Feds like Insane, Panthax(gone quiet, and rightly so! :p) and a few others, same with the Alliance( Frank, AP, Susmesta) that like to bleet back, and its all good for that!

Those of us on the whole on the Imperial side welcome a significant increase to the other Faction sides or even pirates like Liqua etc, we want many enemies to make our conquests more significant! :p

*if i got you in the wrong Faction...tough!

I want a slave girl on board my ship, which I share with my fictional wife, then I can recreate scenes from 'ello 'ello, so when I get caught canoodling the girl by my wife I can say to her "you stupid woman!, Can't you see her uncle has just passed away and she's very upset, I am consoling her!."
Then I will be friends with dodgy imperials, and there shall be things like Madonnas with the big boobies, sausages, and lots of stuffing down trousers.
I hope that's in the DDF.
