The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Yes. An they have now said their will be a whole new flight model for the ships for when they are flying around planets. Question and answer session on Twitch, which for the very first time actually worked for me.

Yes unfortunately. Apparently it's another kind of instance like supercruise. At least that's what I took away from David Braben's answer on the stream just now.

Nah. You'll just teleport from upper orbit to the surface. You probably won't even be able to drive the Scarab, just sit in it - I didn't hear anything about "planetary driving," only landing.

Supercruise for traveling around planets makes sense unless they're planning on bumping up the speeds in regular flight mode. 900 mph is fast but not fast enough for a full scale planet.

Heheh so far my OP pretty much nails it :p

I'm really excited to see all this in action. The issue of what happens to your ship once you leave it will surely be a hot one ; I just hope you can't go back to your landing location to see your ship was blown up and you're stranded on the planet, forced to kill yourself to respawn at a station. Once landed and without anyone inside, a ship should be like a piece of scenery, simply invulnerable. Otherwise people will simply be too scared to leave their ships.

I'm also interested in seeing that "obrital cruise" mechanic they talked about during the stream today, and how it will allow us to approach planets. Will we have a transition screen like the FSD shutdown when we approach a station? If so, at what point will it happen?

Another thing I'm wondering about, is wether we will need to approach a planet (or land on it) before we know if there is something interesting on it, or if points of interest will pop up as we fly by the planet in supercruise... Also, I hope the frequency at which we encounter wreckages or pirate bases will be reasonable, it won't be very believable if there are dozens of shipwrecks on every rock. But I'm confident the procedural generation will be well made in regards to this.

Finally, I hope we will have planetside outposts on some moons, basically like the ones in space except the landing platform will be on firm ground.

You didn't pay much attention then, because everything you just said is wrong.

Nope, they definitely spoke of driving it around, they stated they were looking forward to making each and every moment in the surface vehicle fun and engaging, every skid and every bump.

I think Knowles is talking about the effect of gravity.

Hopefully Orbital cruise is just the transition from Super cruise to low orbit around the planet.

The fact that they're doing airless planets first and then atmosphere planets later suggests that it will be seamless. It only makes sense that atmospheric entry takes more work.

I agree, flying down the planet should be possible and is a great way to get a lot of immersion. What I would like to know is how I enter my terrain vehicle? Is it a cutscene or can I walk to it ? :)

Would be as changing the ship right now. Hopefully, when in-ship walk is introduced it will be different :)

A robot carries your space atrophied body to the buggy.

The walking expansion will need to include excercise features so you can get back into shape before being smushed into a pile of human by gravity.

I don't see any connection between these two facts. Atmosphere planets will require a lot more work because it will need at the very least atmospheric lighting, cloud generation, weather conditions, atmospheric flight model... Airless moons simply require basic ground PG as far as environments are concerned.
