The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

I don't know what your beef is with EvE but I can't see any other viable direction for ED, unless they suddenly go back on the whole Always Online thing and create a single player campaign. As long as it's a persistent MP game it will need some way for players to affect the universe around them. Otherwise it's just a sandbox without the sand.

Are you goon?

This is Elite, not Eve, two entirely different types of game.

Landing - i don't mind much but fighting in planet's atmospheres, where eagles & sidewinders (any small ships) could become a huge advantage - I'll become a brainless fanboy. It could Invert the balance, change the gameplay considering planet's gravity, temperature, etc. It would be awesome.

Two games about spaceships with a persistent universe. Totally different, yep.

The only real difference right now is that EvE has more lore and more stuff to do that's actually worthwhile. Hence why an EvE-lite approach would be good for ED. I never mentioned Goonswarm/0sec shenanigans.

Well, if we could do it in Frontier : Elite II and No Mans Sky and a bunch of other games I'm pretty sure we will manage here to.

Might take a little while but since the game IS instanced it's merely about instancing a large landing area or that the game creates a new zone whenever a player leaves another zone.

Planetary Landings coming June 2016: exclusive to Playstation 4 for the first six months.

calm down and stop insulting people with a different outlook than your own. Ie, grow up.

Stop being a weed, as in the tiresome type who thinks entire arguments are rendered nullified because one uses profanity and or offense. I am not ONLY using insults here.

That is the only thing they have in common.

Conflict Freespace 1 & 2, Wing Commander, X-wing Alliance, Tie Fighter, X Series and Homeworld are all spaceships in space, but every single one is completely different in their own right.

The last thing this game needs is to be anything like EVE... This game is about you and your ship verse the galaxy, not the utter puke EVE is.

i watched no man´s sky E3 presentation and I must say that I found it dissapointing. There was absolutely nothing new to be seen, but for some awkward destroy beacon mechanic. I felt sorry for the dev. I like him, but he didn´t even seem to trust his own thing. I hope I´m wrong

Watching the No Man's Sky E3 has really made me yearn for planetary landings in Elite.

No Man's Sky looks interesting, but I'm not so keen on the fantasy visuals-- but it does give some excellent indication as to what can be don e with procedural generation as far as planetary surfaces are concerned.

We need this feature so badly - and with Elite's more realistic and 'scientific' visual aesthetic.

Agreed. The kid inside me starting going oohhh, and all excited seeing the potential it could bring. For one, it would definitely tear me away from PP and back into exploration.

This...i said the same stuff some page back, and i want to agree with this stuff...it could make the Eagle and Sidewinders very dangerous in atmospheres, i can only imagine a war near some station inside a gas giant...flying trough clouds and having systems and shields pretty much fraked because a thunderstorm...or ''feeling'' the wind in my ship as it happens for flight sims...very different pitch and roll dynamics based on the shape and trusters. It Could give a total different ''layer'' to Elite, making that game the definitive space sims of all time.

Almost everybody is looking forward to Planetary landings, although there a re a few heretics :).
Unfortunately it is such a huge expansion that FD needs a lot of time to get it ready for release.
This is something that cannot be rushed.

The only reason I have not done any true exploration is because I feel it needs the ability to access and experience planets.

Planetary landings, fps combat, ship boarding, multiplayer ships, walking around ships and stations, AI crew and AI wingmen are just some of the features that have been on the cards for addition to this game since both since the kickstarter went live and the developers started introducing design ideas in the design discussion forum, (which you can still find archived here in the forums). In the absence of information from the developers to the contrary, it is safe to assume they are all still planned for inclusion through future dlc. Yes, paid dlc have always been planned too, and one of the reasons that earlier backers have a dlc pass granting them access to all the dlc without additional charge.

That so many folks around here do not seem to know what they bought into is mind boggling, it also renders most of the discussion in this thread moot.

Directly from the original kickstarter campaign page:
"The initial release of Elite: Dangerous doesn't mark the end of development. We intend to continue expanding the game both with new content and new features. A good example of this is planetary landings. We have an ambitious goal for landings to include new gameplay and a rich variety of worlds to explore. To achieve our goal we want the planets to come to life. We also want to add leaving the ships so you can explore space stations or board enemy vessels or even just to look around your own."

I'm the opposite - I've discovered quite a few earth-likes which I'll be going to visit once planetary landings becomes a Thing ;)

David Braben confirms Planetary Landings & First Person mode.

both timed exclusive to PC ;) Other information in the link here.

We then took the opportunity to hit David up with our entire list of questions about what’s coming next for Elite: Dangerous, and first on that list was whether there would be more free updates, or if next up are paid updates like the much-discussed planetary landings.

“There is more free stuff to come, but I don’t want to pre-announce what they are!” laughed Braben. “But, yes, there are paid things to come as well. I’m very, very excited about where we are.” Braben was unfortunately cagey on actual upcoming features we might see, but he did re-confirm that both the planetary landings and third-person walk-around-the-ship mode were coming—and, importantly, that those features would come to PC first.

Speaking of anticipated features: we asked Braben where the rest of the promised ships were, since there are still multiple announced-but-unreleased ships like the Panther Clipper and the Federal Corvette. “There are more to come,” Braben said slowly, “and we haven’t announced when those will be, but they are in plan.”

“Are there any ships that haven’t been announced that are still coming?” I asked.

Braben smiled, then nodded and said, “There’s more.”
