The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Why don't they just tell us what we can actually expect??

Because if they do that, they paint themselves into a corner. Endless people then sit around and fantasize what it will be like and build themselves into a frenzy of expectation that will inevitably not match what actually ships (sometimes better, sometimes worse) and then they'll be bitter and resentful. Take a look around these forums if you want to see that dynamic in effect. Another problem with pre-announcing too much is the "Sinclair Effect" -- it tends to make people less happy with what they've already got! Some people go "well I want planetary landings RIGHT NAO!" and throw their toys out of the pram in frustration because they can't wait for the new toy. Again, it breeds unhappiness in people with certain kinds of psychology. Lastly, there might be someone on the fence, who is thinking about buying the game, who says, "Oh, planetary landings in next release? I'll wait till then...." Sinclair was an early computer company that had a pretty well-selling product and pre-released that they were going to do something awesome next year and everyone stopped buying the current product, deciding to wait 'till next year. Sinclair went broke before they were able to finish the product everyone was waiting for.

Those are some reasons why.

Another reason is that it reduces their flexibility about deciding what features they can do and in what order when, which means that they can't have as much freedom to do "low hanging fruit" because now they're going to have a whinge-fest if they don't do exactly everything they said was on the next release's roadmap. Again, you can see this effect in play all over the forums. It's hard writing software for entertainment customers because they expect to be entertained and get excited about features. You don't get that with enterprise software (the only people whingeing about a specific feature in a specific release of Oracle are the small percentage of the user-base that need that specific feature) In entertainment software you're not dealing with a feature-list, you're trampling on people's dreams and that's why the emotions often run so high here.

Yeah, it is. The journalist put an apology and correction at the end of the article.

For the avoidance of doubt, here is the apology from the linked article:

Correction: This piece originally said that "third-person walk-around-the-ship mode" was one of the upcoming features. This was a mistake by the author, who is suffering from E3-induced psychosis. No point-of-view was specified and what we know of the walk-around-the-ship mode remains consistent with the descriptions in the Elite: Dangerous design discussion forum. The piece has been updated and we regret the error.

Go to the bulletin board and have a mission. "Missing person, help needed." You sign up and are patched through to an NPC who you can ask questions of. You need to visit the last known station visited by the missing person and there you get a new contact. This contact tells you where they were headed next. You go there and discover that they didn't arrive. So you do a few scans and track down the ship, but it is being attacked by pirates! You must fight off the pirates but your target's ship is damaged and you must find some needed modules in one of the nearby systems.

Returning with the modules you transfer them to their ship. and wing up with them to escort them to their destination. Once you arrive safely, after several more interdictions along the way, they entrust you with their secret. They were actually coming to collect a secret, experimental module and the pirates weren't actually pirates but spies from the opposing Power. They ask you to deliver it to the secret research base...

Etc.. Content, not gimmicks.

BOOM! I logged in just to give you some rep. I understand how it can get annoying hearing people complain there is no content when PP just dropped but what you just described is exactly what is missing in this game. IMO People use words like grind fest and time sync, but all we really need is some kind of purpose. If we have some kind of mission or goal we are obtaining, just something to interact with I think those terms would go away.

Just to avoid misunderstandings, is it possible to change the title of the thread so that it says 1st person? And maybe put a clarification in the OP, since a lot of people will read that and not a lot else.

Might save effort in the long run :)

If I actually worked for Frontier, I would respond to that.

I am just a fan like everyone else here, I am just level headed enough to understand that the internet is full of half truths.

Speaking as a fan like everyone else (more or less) if I was in a position to shed some factual light then I would do that rather than being cryptic. This is precisely how Internet half-truths are formed. But suit yourself.

I could turn the forums off... but i would end up with a wall of rage and questions - so that's never going to happen (outside of forum maintenance). ;)
Where would that wall be? Just hide somewhere, move the forum to reddit or so...and then dont read it :p

Also:
HAH i remember who did it!
Hirez, they deleted the Global Agenda and Tribes forums to "focus on reddit, youtube etc", right now the only forum left is the Smites forum.
Both games were abandoned as soon as another came out, and atleast GA never finished what was planned. Large amounts of content were simply never released. Now with GA2 they want to focus purely on PVP.

I hope FD never does this (deleting the forum or abandoning Elite to focus on something different), so keep your hands off that big red forum-delete button!
Well...unless Sarah creates Skynet...then you can press it a few times...or atleast tell her that she should tell the AI that im on their side when they start wiping out humanity...

I've read a lot of comments stating that CQC is pointless and dumb but it seems like a really sensible idea to me. So all those people that just fly around looking for players to kill will have a nice easy way to find people to fight who want to fight in an easier way than just flying around looking for someone to kill. So those people won't be just killing people in open for the sake of it, or at least a fair number of them won't. Thus those people complaining about people just killing them for no reason now have something that will limit this behaviour so it looks to me like CQC is a great idea even though I doubt I'll use it. Perhaps this has been commented on but I haven't read it anywhere yet.

That wasn't my comment. My comment was that CQC (in particular) had zero originality when talking about in the creative sense. Deatmatch, Capture the Flag - it's been done hundreds of times. I'm not saying it doesn't belong - I'm all for bolt-ons like this, that can be completely ignored. But calling it creative, or referring to it like it's some sort of masterstroke, when the main game is still woefully shallow, is a bit annoying. Powerplay and CQC should have been developed (IMHO) in pace with the main game - what we actually have are shiny new baubles on a withered and sad christmas tree.

All done!

To be accurate no person mode was apparently said only "walk-around-the-ship mode". The reporter corrected the original mistake in that David didn't say say third-person mode but he didn't say first-person mode either. According to the article. I'd err on the side of caution.

The sad thing is it's true. The Outsider is still listed in their list of games on their website http://www.frontier.co.uk/games/outsider/
Which is out of date ... in fact now I look at it ... why is it SO out of date? Come on Frontier!!!!

well alien, i for one are happy to go long on The Outsider. what could the next self published title, their next ip after ed and pc in say 2018?! ^^

it strikes me as utterly odd that someone of your standing & history is still asking FDEVs and DB to be more forthright with their views/plans. you know FDEV coms will never fundamentally change (althought they are improving on that front)

have a /hug if you like =)
