The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Oh well, looks like my months of solitude will be ended then. Back to space dock I go. :( Might just about make it in time for Horizons to be released.

With the coming Horizons add-on I'm quite looking forward to being able to drop down onto planets and explore some alien worlds.

But, will I need to buy some add-ons for my ship before I can do that? Right now I'm exploring near the rim and out along one of the arms, and I'm along way from a supply base. I'm not really keen on having to head back to buy stuff to head back out again so I can land on planets so far out.

Has FD said anything on if we're going to need to kit our ships out for planetary landings?

Well I'm no help; but I do seem to remember something was said about re 'kitting' your ship...Hey I recall; DB mentioned the need to purchase a rack support to carry your SRV.

I'm so thrilled about being able to land on planets and moons I can hardly contain myself. No really! When I saw the trailer I almost wet myself!
But enough about that...

Like Ayo said in the beginning of the thread, it could turn into one hell of a ride or into a massive disappointment. The game is on. The expectations are astronomically high!

Combat

-Bomb bigger pirate stations with your ship
-Caves with pirate activity
-Headquarters for known pirate organizations
-Pirates with active distress beacon to lure the players
-Leathery eggs? :)
-End game boss encounters - make true use of those A graded Condas and the Wings expansion

Trading

-More rare commodities at stations
-Mining with your ship

Exploration

-Introduce Drilling
Drilling is for SRV to drill for certain conditions a few metres below the planets surface. Drill for minerals, ice, water-ice, water, etc, and then sell the data together with regular scan data of the planet.
-Caves
-Tunnels, big enough to fit a small ship, but too small for medium/big ships. At the end of the tunnel might be some highly valuable minerals like a Painite deposit.

Missions

-Outbreaks on colonies, people need medicines
-Religious fundamentalists need to be shot down
-Slavery?
-Close range surface scanning for seismic activity or gas
-Investigate a colony - survivors, pirates, slaves

...More will come on this post.

One more thing.....
Debug Camera is a must down there, not only for ship but also for the SRV. Some stunning shots could be produced by the community. Let us have it!
Thank you!

YES ! I'm so excited about this.... I always saw the space gig, but now we begin the 'ground work'. The game is beginning to fill out the SciFi book lover dream in me, as a kid. I repped you.

Yup, we'll have to buy stuff to do landings. Most definitely.
Most probably even to go into a closer orbit. Or Orbital Cruise. I think that's what they called it.
And even more modules for storing the SRV. And the SRV itself.

You mean as in FD Zarch, v2000, and Infestation series?

Looking forward to it :)

Edit
A reprint of the description from FD's website on Infestation just incase some didn't bother to click on the link

Infestation is a vehicle-based combat and exploration game with a large emphasis on diverse gameplay. The single player game features a mission-based campaign where the player is able to freely travel between twenty two different worlds, researching new weapons and vehicle modes as they progress.

The multiplayer mode features four completely different game styles, including racing and football.

Features:
Five vehicle modes - switch between a range of vehicles to solve different mission problems
Twenty two worlds - each very different, and with varied puzzles to solve to dispose of the alien infestation
Research alien technology - use your scientists to acquire alien knowledge and devices
Varied devastating weapons - try attaching limpet mines to alien craft as they return to their base
Many multi-player games in one - football, racing, capture the flag, and 'buggy madness'

Horizons planetary bases and vehicle-holdings ships concept art released!

This is an amazing picture an FD artist did for the future of Horizons. In the picture below, a land vehicle is seen driving towards the garage of the base and a shuttle with a large door for vehicles is shown. There is even gases coming out of the building! :)

Maybe it has been asked, but I can't find any answers when searching...

What would happen if a cmdr landed on a slope?

http://i.imgur.com/q3NiPCP.gif

I would imagine as we got closer to the ground something similar to the 'docking pad' HUD display would guide us to an area where best to land on a flat or semi inclined surface, the 'landing pad' display would perhaps have a flashing red warning light on where not to land, but would switch to a flashing green light to where it's best to land safely.

I guess the game would need something like this 'pad' instrument to make it easy for the scarab to be deployed without any problems. Also maybe the game code would stop us from deploying landing gear on awkward steep inclines/slopes/crevices until we got some kind of 'green light' clearance to land our craft properly.

[edit] Without the landing gear down perhaps the ship would stay in some 'hover' mode until a safe spot could be located.

I find that Horizons will offer so much game play if you add these elements:

SEEDING A PLANET WITH LIFE ( TERRAFORMING, PANSPERMIA, EVOLUTION & CIVILIZATION )

teraform.jpg

- First you Terraform a planet, player can buy ultra large and expensive planetary terraforming machines that creates planetary atmospheres overtime
- Once a planet develops the right atmosphere, you bring colonizers to the planet to seed it
- Players should have the ability to collect rare animals and plants from other planets and bring to the terraformed planet
- After some time, you can visit the planets to see the continuous evolution of plants, animal species and the civilization of the colonizers (time based, ex. monthly or weekly progression)
- Civilization should flourish overtime and once the civilization becomes advanced enough, they can join the existing powers and political empires

PLANETARY BATTLES (NUKES, ORBITAL BOMBARDMENT, CHEMICAL WARFARE and MILITARY TAKE OVER)
bombard.jpg
- Planetary battles should allow ships to drop Nukes or chemical warfare to the planet to reduce the number of living population in the planet in preparation for a military take over
- Players can also take part in supplying a planet with weapons, soldiers and utilities for planetary take over
- Planets can have planetary defense systems (military satellites or ground to space missile installations) in place that can shoot down ships if you are hostile to a certain power who has taken over that planet
