The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

This thread popping up again reminded me about a dog-fight I had with an NPC a while ago.

I was interdicted very close to a planet. In the process of evading I somehow managed to get too close to the planet and was pulled out, overheating and spinning and generally not really being on top of things. I spent most of the fight evading, being outgunned but slightly faster than the interdicting NPC (I had just moved up into a Cobra, but had not had funds to upgrade much internals or weapons).

After a while the fight had moved far enough that I hit the Body Exclusion Zone. That's when I thought that if (back then) planetary landings would become part of the game, it'd be fantastic to have situations like that; having fights progress into orbit and perhaps into atmosphere (more or less uncontrolled) and eventually near (or at) the surface.

The final part of the fight, when/if first person perspective is truly implemented, might be the two pilots fighting it out by throwing rocks at each other, spent personal weapons scattered on the ground and burning wrecks of their ships in the background...

I like the idea of things starting in space and ending up on the planet. It would have been so good to be able to do this..and in a seamless way. Unfortunately with the way FD have made the transitions completely un-seamless and clunky makes this impossible. It really is a shame !

Not necessarily! It will just mean we'll have to stay together from instance to instance. Yes, not quite seamless, but I'll learn to live with the compromise.

I hope that planetary Landing will require piloting skills and will be AT LEAST as difficult as docking, but i would prefear to be more difficult.
.
In horizon we will land on atmosphere-less planets so ship shape will not matter, but when eventually we will be able to land on atmosphere planets i do really hope than only few ships will be able to ATMOS-Flight.
.
And specialized equipment is ALAWAYS welcome so it would be nice to have specific Landing thrusters that occupy an internal compartement, and must have a size that makes sense with ship mass, so possibly occupy the best internal compartment of the ships. Something that makes us able to do choices and not have a ship "win win in every situation".

FD, Please can we have this level of fidelity for atmospheric planetary landings.

Makes "One Mans Sky" look like Manic Miner

Nice. But the view distance is 40km. Ok if you walk or drive but drastically low if you're in a spaceship that goes several times the speed of sound.

I work with Military Flight sims and 150km is a good starting point for a view distance.

I think the devs can easily get away with reduced distance for performance on most worlds - Am hoping most planets involve flying through crazy weather as opposed to CAVOK

I'm fine with relatively low fidelity but large view distance while flying, then reducing the view distance and increase the fidelity while in the SRV.

Yeah I know, the approach that FD are using with PG is whole other ball game as well, I don't think Unigine uses PG but I could be wrong. Also keep in mind that some of that stuff is a few years old now and a few years in the graphic engine arms race is a very long time. I just hope that the Cobra engine is going to deliver some awesome environments, with all the volumetric and effects that the Unigine engine has.

I cant wait to land on an uncharted alien planet, getting out into the rain and walking through the grass and other fauna to the shoreline of a lake and looking up at a huge ringed planetrise with all its glorious volumetric action

Yeah sure great. It looks great in a concept engine running on someone elses top end computer so Frontier should be able to have it looking the same on our computers within a network game by next Thursday.

...and make it configurable for da modz and stuff.

next Thursday! don't be ridicules I was expecting Monday at the latest,

concept engine, top end computers, well no actually that demo runs on a standard modern pc with a good GPU and the engine is available to download now
