The REAL void

It seems at least plausible to me now that something like Jaques Station or maybe purpose-built fleet carriers could leapfrog out to even Andromeda with the current in-game technology.
I don't know about true intergalactic space, the density gets quite low out there. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if the mean star separation stays below 500 ly well out into the halo, and throughout structures like the Sagittarius Stream. Seems quite plausible that a fleet carrier could eventually navigate to the Magellanic Clouds at least.

Yeah, seems like the "missing matter" might be in the space between galaxies. Makes we wonder if anything is living there.
Not as such, we have a pretty fair handle on the total amount of matter out there in intergalactic space. It's over half of the total baryonic mass in the universe as it is. Probably mostly in the form of hot gas, but how much is in the form of compact objects like stars and black holes is very much an open question.

We exist at the wrong scale to worry about other galaxies.

They seem to be the business of supermassive black holes, not people.

Microbes probably think the same thing about the space between 2 people.
Others can do as they please, but in the game I would go as far as possible, assuming it isn't just an ego contest for the sake of record settings, and if there were no limit, I would keep going.

Of course this isn't something that's going to be implemented anyway, so it's a moot point. I still think it's interesting to speculate though.

Unless we're getting Galactic Hyperspace, chances are we won't be able to travel to other galaxies in the first place. Stars are too far apart from each other out in the void between galaxies for FSD drives to have a chance.

IMO it doesn't apply very well in this case, as ED Milky Way is bound by relatively limited content slowly developed by FDev.

I mean, I'm sure there can be a lot of "interesting" variation of rings, planets and stars for those who manage to find endless joy from such things but in the end it won't cut for the large audience - look at the reddit group and the vast majority of screen shots posted there are ringscapes which as itself tells a lot about variety.

In which case you open new territories (unlikely) or you deepen the puddle so shifting through all those brown dwarves won't be so damn repetitive.

If FD ever gets around to implement all the missing planet types, it will boost immensely the possible amount of interesting things to see and find. When 2.0 launched, I never imagined back then that almost half a decade later we would still be stuck with just airless iceballs and dusty rocks.

first thing FD would have to do is to remove that stupid "noshow" proc they have implemented for Systems which are ingame, but not shown in Galmap. There are plenty of Systems which you can search by Galmap, focus is shifted there and after 0,1 sec its blanked out so you cannot select. Same applies even if you have selected realistic view - rather disappointing as it limits players choice without reason....
