Would be nice to have some more data for the shields. Using the compare function, I can't see any difference between them both. To be honest, for the amount they cost, there is precious little difference between a Rank C and a Rank A but a Rank A is several hundred credits while a Rank C or even Rank B is less than a quarter of the price. An output power rating would be nice along with the recharge rate so we can see which is better. I would presume the recharge rate of a higher Rank shield would be far superior to a low Rank as well. Otherwise I can't really see the point in buying a Rank A when a Rank B is that much cheaper with only a very marginal loss in output that wouldn't even stand one burst from an enemy guns.

Honestly, the shields in this game are way too weak. I have class D shields now and two volleys from even a weak enemy can take them out completely, then they take forever to recharge. Taking someone out in a dogfight should take more than 3 volleys.

Asp with a lower Shield Generator?

Iv thought about replacing my type 5 Shield Generator with a type 5 cargo rack, to get a second 64 ton cargo rack in my Asp. As there is no type 4 internal compartment for the Asp, i would remove the type 3 cargo rack & put in a type 3 Shield Generator, would probably need an A3.
How much weaker would my ship integrity be, I dont want it bursting into flames if someone fires a BB gun at it.
Has anyone done this to their Asp?

I've done that to my Asp. I've nixed the weapons as well and I'm doing great trading in it with 120 cargo, but I have to tell you I've not had anyone shoot at me yet, so I can't tell how the class 3 shields will hold up under fire, however they do prevent all the scrapes and dings from daily use

I ran my Asp with A3 shields and 120T cargo for a while before I bought my T7 outright, I still have my Asp but am now gearing it up for combat.

Just be careful with those class 3 shields, they protect with minor bumps and scraps but are not good for bigger impacts at all, as you'd expect. I managed to destroy my Asp twice, once when boosting out of a station, trying to beat a python through the slot and again when trying to sneak in with dodgy goods and overshooting...I can be real stupid sometimes :) It makes a perfectly adequate trading vessel with class 3 shields though, I'd do it all again if I was looking at trading efficiently in an Asp, just be careful...

Keep the type 3 cargo rack and rap your ASP in bubblewrap!

To answer your question without my need to sarcasm in the morning: what's the main reason to keep your shield? If you need it to protect you in a dogfight I would not recommend the A3 since it will go down very, very fast.
If you just need it to have a layer of protection for docking: with 4 pips in shields, and keeping your speed in check, it might work.

Overall: I 'd advise against it since the tonnage of your ASP is going to exceed the max T of your A3 shield.

thanks for the input guys...i do like to cut up ships going out of the stations & have bounced off a couple of biggies once or twice, maybe i'll stick to my type 5

This is my current setup I've been running for the last month or so - It makes a decent low tonnage hauler with a constantly available boost speed touching on 400 you can out run threats on demand when you need to protect your cargo at the expense of your pride. (or is that just me) Can't say the A3 shields have been put to the test but they covered me well enough with the occasional collisions with Lakon npc drivers and docking stations not looking where there going. Helps survivability if you slow down earlier than you think you need too (pop the landing gear) their a heavy ship & need a little more time to slow. I'm getting close to buying a Python now which will replace it with more than double the cargo space. I'll be tooling up the Asp to offensive rather than a defensive trader, I hope the Python will prove to be just as versatile and tough as the Asp has proven to be. I would say go for it, do it and enjoy the ride, its no Viper but it's still very agile for it's size & weight.
Sorry I don't know how to put this image into a spoiler.

I ran mine with a D3 shield (kept the paint nice and crisp even if scraping the slot) for 104t cargo capacity until I could afford both an A5 shield for it _and_ rebuy a T6 for hauling cargo. Now my Asp can only carry 68t, but that is fine as it is no longer intended to be a heavily armed white van :)

I run my Asp like this for the majority of it's life:
http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=10g,,2-3I8S7_6u6u8S8I,06e05e03e7Pc03e02e02e

Now that it has been replaced by a Clipper (best looking truck in town), It's now armed to the teeth with all A modules as I use it as a combat ship.

Yep, that's a good trader setup too, bit more jump range than mine so plenty of options for the op to choose from, the Asp makes a good mid range haulier when configured for that role & makes an even better fighter when you want a change.

Im configured for 104t cargo with A3 shields.
Up until yesterday, I forgot I had made the switch out, but it seems NPCs are getting a little harder to kill.

I was interdicted by a viper yesterday, and as normal, I turned to face it, expecting an easy kill. We exchanged fire, and it's shields didn't go down with a full 10 seconds of fire from my 2D gimballed beams. this is not normal!
Long story short, it took about twice as long as normal to kill, and in the process, my A3 shields dropped, and I took 31% hull damage dropping me to 69%.
The hull damage cost me 68k in repars and a further 4k in wear and tear. I received an 8k bounty reward for killing the viper.

I should have run. With class 5 shields I'd have been OK.

Lesson is, fit class 3 shields for cargo space, and you are now flying a trader, not an all rounder... you run from combat, or face big repair bills, and if it all goes Pete Tong possible death at the hands of the new breed of tougher NPCs.

I understand class and rank, but it would be useful to know how many charges are in class and rank BEFORE I install.
Last night was doing test runs to find this out, needed to know BEFORE i have to use it :)

Shield Cell Banks: Use only one and not all?

Hey folks, I currently have 3 Shield Cell Banks fitted and when I use them, it seems to use one from each bank.
Is this a setting I'm missing or is it pointless to have more than 1 Shield Cell Bank fitted?

The key binding triggers all cell banks, if you want to run with multiple banks you need to switch one off until you want to start using it. I think some larger ships need multiple cells to fully replenish their shields.

You can either appoint them to different fire groups, or manually disable them in "modules", but the standard hotkey will fire all at once.
Plus side, your shield will be

Heh, and that's the important part.
But it's just excessive use and required more frequent rearms :)

I've just disabled all but one and will switch it around when one bank is empty.

I decided to keep my class 5 shields and run with 72t which is plenty for rare runs. Releasing the 5 slot gives you 32 not 64...

I only had to rebuy cause I smashed into walls though....if you can stop short of that in stations you'll be alright :)

My 120T trading config before I bought my T7: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=30g,0...4yH4yH,2-8S8S8S6u6Q8S8I,0AA08c7Pc05U05U03w03w

My current (still progressing) explorer/combat config: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=30g,3...4yH4yH,2-7_7_886u6Q8S8I,0AA7Su05U4zM7fO2US2jw

Jury is still out for me as to whether I go for a class 6 shield gen or not.....
