I would say that the Scots are still a little on the rebellious side :)

Although I would add that crushing is not the done thing anymore. I think that bit was written around 1750, so different times and different people.

Sun? Bright? In England? When?

One of the most torturous things about living in LA was the huge nuclear fireball frying the land every day. Now that I've moved back East, I thoroughly enjoy a nice English/Irish day - gray & drizzling.

Solo-multiplayer is something like sweet vegetables. It just doesn't fit together.

I must object to this categorization - Hawai'ian vegetables (with pineapple) are delicious!

It did improve and there are still coming patches adding new content from time to time - in fact many games of the X-series had to be polished by patches after release. And Egosoft has always been adding content to their games for many years after the initial release. Another big asset to the X-series is the vast modding community (a big asset for many offline games offering mod support).

Still Rebirth is somehow a step back from the older games (expecially X3 and its addons) - at least to me and I think many others in the X-community.

I don't know why, but in Rebirth the devs decided to have the player stuck to a single, upgradeable ship. Well, the player can purchase other ships, but can't directly control them.

It's not a bad game (now after the many fixes), nor a bad design per see, but when one of the main features of a series is allowing the players to pilot dozens of different ships that change is indeed a very bad idea. It would be akin to Frontier trying to pass a 3-lives bullet hell shooter as the true successor of Elite; even if it was the best game of its genre, it would still rile up fans.

I have to admit, that I did not like the drop of the offline Solo mode at first - I was just about to back ED on KS, when I read about the cancellation of Offline Solo and subsequently decided not to back.
After the release I decided to give ED and its Solo online mode a chance, and haven't regretted it since.

I heartedly agree with this post. I almost did the same, but then I researched the game, kept up on the news and decided (on the basis of solo/online) to purchase.

Being a Pict myself, all you fluffy poms get the raspberry :p

Er, can we get back on topic please?

See, it's been too long between mergers - a good merger always brings us back on topic once we've wondered off.
Currently everyone here has said their bit... nothing to talk about until new folks turn up with "new ideas", that have been talked about for 3 years ;)

And it's a holiday, it's all hallows eve. where we tell our children to forget all those safety talks and actually go and talk to strangers, ask for sweeties from them and see how they get on.
So grab a Twix, Mars or Marathon (Snickers can kiss my ...), turn up that national anthem and laugh at how ridiculous it is it :D

Happy Holiday :)

I highly assume this questions, why do solo/private influence certain things, remains unanswered and will stay unanswered for quite a while.
The two answers that matter, IMHO, are:

- Because Frontier wants Solo players to influence those things.
- Because, since they promised it from the start, removing the ability of Solo players to influence those things would cause issues with players that bought the game based on those promises.
(See, for example, the Dev Diary Video #2, at the 4:10 mark. Which is linked from Jockey79's Wall of Information.)

The rest is speculation on our part about what motivated Frontier. Both designs have positive and negative points, though they do attract different kinds of player; allowing Solo players to influence all aspects of the game makes it more apt to attract both Solo players and those that value their independence, while restricting it to Open makes the game better at attracting the players that either want others to be forced to play with them or that value interdependence. This, in turn, makes it specially troublesome to change the design after sale has started, as it would make the game inadequate for the player base it has already attracted.

Before someoen asks why MP influences solo: Don't know, in my opinion, open should only influence exclusively MP stuff like PP and CGs. Imagine a SP game with PP.
Games that have "a SP game with PP" are fairly common, actually. Plenty of solo games out there where you can join a faction and strengthen it, or work against a specific faction to weaken it, while being given a choice of multiple factions to work for or against.

Besides, if Open players can influence what I see when I'm Solo, I should be able to equally influence what they see in Open through Solo gameplay.

Yes it is "play the way you want", but playing like "I want to influence someone else's world without encountering the targeted player/group" is the most arbitrary weird design I have ever seen in online games.
Not anything special, really. It's basically a popularity contest where you can only vote by playing, which is the common design when you want the community to dictate the direction of the game without having to fit all those players in a single instance. And, if the game allows PvP but isn't PvP-focused, when you want the whole of the player base to influence it instead of restricting the choice to just the PvPers.

Nahh, singleplayer should only affect a single player. The BGS could be saved locally so we would have an offline mode as well! Would appreciate that because sometime I have connection issues :O
That would be the offline, DRM-free mode Frontier discarded roughly a month before launch.

I would love it, mind; it's what I actually purchased the game for. But, as long as I can't have my own little galaxy no one else is allowed to influence, as long as I'm forced to share the same galaxy with everyone else, then I want to be able to fully influence said galaxy without ever needing to meet anyone.

I really should steer clear of you, you make me think & post bad things (sometimes) ;)

I mean intergalactic blackmail, where did that come from, I never even played that other game, I surprise myself sometimes.

Anyway OT, maybe we should start another thread to keep this one tidy and the mods happy, you mentioned a support group for the quiet times, maybe a better idea would be to call it "The Lecturers rest room". Most of the regulars in here have to repeat the same info month after month to new students arrivals to this thread. And yes I did have to use google on the earlier posts and learned something, every day is a school day.

Hey, don't blame me because you have no will power :p

The depths of my psyche are optional, a free DLC if you like - I didn't force you to partake, just because we have sweeties, naked bodies and beer - you don't have to join in :p

This is not a bad idea.....

While part of me wants to name an "off topic" thread for this one: S.O.G Support Group, I do have other names knocking about the depths of my mind.
Be afraid, very very afraid :p

This whole thread is like a bad copy of Frankenstein.

Someone always comes up with a reason to cut somebody else out of the game. I say we should take all the parts that have been cut off and make a new monster.

Open should be ditched! Everyone should be forced to pick a group to play in, agreeing to the terms of that group. Then the community can arbitrarily enforce behaviour. And once that person has alienated him or herself from every group by being selfishly obnoxious, they can go play solo.

HEY!

I pushed that idea for ages in mega 2.... How dare you support me, without telling me you are supporting me. You should support me by quoting my posts in order to show you are in fact supporting me.

;)
