Absolutely. FWIW you seem to be addressing me as if I'm one of those exclusive open players... I'm not. I choose my play mode based on my mood when I fire up the game. I'm a mobius group member, along with three other private groups. I spend time in solo, group and open, it varies but in any given snapshot of my play you'll see no more than half my time spent in one over the other two.
No DaveB I was not addressing you as an exclusive open player, I just used your statement there to expand a point that some other players seem to think their group play (Open) is the largest group of players in the game. I would think if we were to be able to log the figures of all the smaller private groups and larger groups added to the solo players we would probably be surprised at the demographics of exactly which group of players comprised the games majority. It is just open is not as fragmented as the numerous PVE centric groups that play. Sorry if I gave you a wrong impression.

Personally, I would be very surprised if most of the players aren't in Solo.

Really?

With "Co-op", "Multiplay" and "MMO" - there is definitely a strong sense of playing with others if you buy from the Steam Store.
It's the main FD site that reads in a very vague way now.

I'd expect a good split between open / solo and those who jump between the two.
There is a lack of information about group play, what it is and how to make effective use of it.

A good split with everyone playing nice.. would be good ^,^

I still don't get why this is even a topic. Frontier have kindly gave every group an opportunity to play the way they want to play. Open for those that want to interact with others regardless of who they are. Private groups for those that wish to play with like minded people and solo for those that like to go it alone with npc's like other "offline" games. Everyone has somewhere they can play. I never saw any issues with this.

Diablo 3 was designed as a multiplayer game, advertised as one, the devs made sure the game played with others was more rewarding in a loot and gold sense — and about 80% of the players just wouldn't bother playing with others. Blizzard had to make multiplayer into easy mode and increase its rewards even more, to the point playing in multiplayer with a bunch of pure leechers is still better than playing solo, to change that.

And that was not the first game I've seen that issue crop on. Even traditional MMOs are not immune, often having far more solo players that the devs wanted. Bioware even did a GDC presentation on the many different kinds of loner players that exist in MMOs, and how getting them to actually play with other players is a challenge, a few years ago.

Plus, the cherry on top, loners are also far less prone to join forums or similar venues, so they are far more likely to end in the silent majority than more gregarious players.

So, yeah. I expect ED to have more players in Solo than in the other modes added together.

And they are welcome to play that way and enjoy the game in the way it seems best to them. Just like the rest of us are in the way that works best for us.

I still don't get why this is even a topic.

Because a certain faction of Open players insist that:

1. Solo or Group mode is "easy mode."
2. Open mode should have moar/higher rewards because "it's harder."
3. "Open is a wasteland"
4. FD should get rid of Solo mode.
5. Solo/Group mode is "cheating"
6. Because the wolves' targets are "escaping" into Solo or Group mode.
7. You shouldn't be able to take ships/credits earned in Solo/Group mode into Open.
8. There's really no more danger in Open than in Solo/Group mode.

et cetera ad infinitum. That's about the gist of the main complaints.

You may notice that several of these points appear to conflict with others. This is true; it doesn't seem to stop anyone from bringing up the same disgruntled points over and over through 3 (going on 4) iterations of this thread.

*Remember that I said "a faction." I don't believe that the larger set of Open mode players agree with those points. Most of them, like most of the Solo/Group players, are happy with FD's implementation of the choice of the three modes. It is just a loud & vocal minority who appear to not be able to separate their emotions from the game (in that they are somehow upset that there are many players they can't get to/fight with/blockade/pewpewpew).

MMOs games bring much higher profit and attract more investors. In a couple of years single player games will be a thing of the past. Blizzard profiteers most out of multiplayer. So tell us more how single player games have more people.

Sadly they also turned MMOs into those F2P monstrosities where you pay for everything you used to earn through progression, fast tracking and rewarding the one with the largest wallet instead of the one with dedication. And while I agree that they bring more profit on the long run, there is a place for single player games still, as those can focus more on things that multiplayer might gloss over in a frenzy to reach the endgame. And then there's very successful and awesome hybrids, like Divinity Original Sin. It is the best way of making a story heavy RPG co-op and having all co-op members actually take part.

Hmm.. *Looks at the list of best selling Games in 2015* ... please tells us more about how single player games are fading..

I mean seriously.. Your statement I feel is just like those made that said guns will be obsolete in aircraft when jets came out so they were not designed into airframes and the travesty that was..., how the Army felt Aircraft would be obsolete because of missiles and almost got the Air Force disbanded, , the claims when laptops came out that desktops would be obsolete, and the more recent consol claim that PC building will be a thing of the past... and that console market will overpower PC's.. I mean I know Best Buys is getting rid of their components selection, but that is because they cannot compete with other retailers and online suppliers not because no one builds PC's anymore.

<ers and shakes head, then sighs> Elite stands on it's own in any case. Which of these games could attract such a crowd of 40, 50 and 60 somethings? Mold Breaker! (Glad I spelt that correctly.)

Fallout 4 is an MMO? Who knew? I have read about the death of single player games since the inception of MuDs, Lans and then the internet. Yet in 2015 from what I can gather one of the biggest hyped games and I believe one of the best sellers, was Fallout 4. I really can't see the end of single player games any time soon. I wonder why you would want the end of single player games?

there are 2 pve channels already
solo
group play

open is called open for a reason this thread is pointless

Group play is not a PvE mode - there is no restriction on players attacking / destroying other players.

So, there are two PvP modes and one truly PvE mode.

And there was Witcher 3 last year and probably many, many, others, but as you well know hyperbole takes the place of well researched comment so best not to feed them.:)

Actually "Open" started the thread... and there is only one PVE channel.. Solo... Group play PVP is possible even if undesired. I will agree with you that the thread is pointless, but sadly some still want to push PVP on others or make PVP the only "right" way to play so this thing keeps going on and on and on..

Oh new name Idea for Threadnaught 4.. Energizer 4, keeps going and going, Fallout 4, the wasteland chronicles
