Yeah, i was there. Nothing crackin.

Im parked at Tionisla, spent about 3 hours around Lave tonight.

Didnt see you or Maj or Filos or any of the CODE boys.

Instancing or are you simply not there brah...

I saw these guys at Lucas when I was coming back from my trip to Sag A*. Stopped at George Lucas for the thrill of being totally ignored by all these wanted CMDRs (no bounty, no allegiance, no cargo = no problem, 99% of the time), repaired my FDL and was going to Shinrarta to build my Courier when I saw Maj's Anaconda and some Python he was winged with leaving at the same time. I also saw Nonya docked at the station.

Anyway, I think it's more of an instancing or timing issue than anything. Powerplay has also caused a shift in demographics and taken some of the action away from the old hotspots.

Open is inherently more risky due to the presence, regardless of how rare, of ganking players. Because of this additional risk, without additional reward, more and more people are moving to solo/group play and abandoning Open play. Open play is losing population (the reason to play open) because of this.

It's not Immovable Object vs. Unstoppable Force. It's Cause and Effect.

The risk of Open is the reward of Open.

Honestly... considering that Open Play is 90% griefers, 5% newbies and 5 roleplayers - what do you expect?...
ACTUALLY... considering that Open Play is almost void of griefers - why haven't we seen you there? At any Station or RES there are mostly lots of cops (many in 'Condas) so even IF you are WANTED in another system then for a player to even KWS scan you and pick a fight with you he will get WANTED himself and soon find it hard to get out alive! Get out there and try it. You may find playing alone (not in a Wing) more profitable but Winging up is being friendly.
.
Tonight though 2 of us became WANTED and had to flea ourselves! Unfortunately my Wing lost his ship but its all a learning curve and part of the experience. You won't get adrenaline free like this elsewhere!

Slap a 10% 'hazard bonus' on every trade profit, bounty-voucher, combat voucher and mission reward for those of us doing it in open, and the galaxy would become quite the lively place with plenty of players around. Assuming instancing don't screw you over naturally. Which do happen now and again.

It is.

Peak time UK in the old worlds and there is nobody..

I never go out of open. I just don't hang around the systems where all the newbie hunters hang out. Why should anyone? It just plays into their hands.

Besides, what's the value to you of having other people in open play? Are you a pirate? Are you somehow interfering with other people's play? Because, if not, what do you care whether they are in open or not?

Well, I don't bother with PP, but chasing a random Aisling supporter through 3 different systems before destruction was quite fun. And just happened to stumble upon the player while cruising inside Mahon space, so the meeting was pure luck.

Mind you I wouldn't have bothered outside Mahon space, but the player was obviously full aware of the risks and indeed offered a snarky RP reply after interdiction.

Sucks for the guy I was packing a wake scanner. Solo wouldn't have that for either of us.

Well, the new players probably won't know better, and there is the biggest problem.
Shake up the spawn locations if not already done.
I only started in Open well away from where I started. I may revisit in a "potato" ship soon, just to see what it's like.
I didn't find the general forum vibe encouraging until I had a better idea how to get away, learned how to basically.
A noob won't know even half of what I know, and that's minimal at best but I likes a challenge.
But, if they're trolling new players....can't be good for the game as a whole.
I haven't seen it yet though.

Been playing for six weeks now, exclusively in open (apart from two minutes early on, when I was unable to dock at a station filled with fellow newbies), and I can confirm what others have said about it not actually being this grief-filled nightmare it's reputed to be.

I've had plenty of positive interactions with other CMDRs, and only been interdicted by one twice, in my faction's home system. (Both times I submitted, and while the first encounter led swiftly to the insurance screen and the second saw me escape by the skin of my teeth from an FdL and another ship, neither gave me cause for complaint.) Granted, I haven't gotten round to visiting the Old Worlds yet, but still.

Even if it were much more "dangerous", though, I wouldn't play any other way (I might switch to smaller ships, though, to lessen the pain of rebuys!). Being in an Elite world populated by fellow humans is a gaming dream come true for me. Like many others, I played the original Elite in the 80s (mostly the 64K colour version!), picturing in my mind the sort of images we see for real now. Would 80s me, magically given the chance to play this game, and told he could do so (a) on his own, (b) in a private group, or (c) with the rest of the world, have gone for options (a) or (b)? Would he balls. And neither will I.

I understand why some players have migrated to groups/solo, if they've been unlucky and attacked a lot... but at the same time I (and 80s me) don't understand it.

Nanomam seems to be a happy hunting group for the more PvP focus Cmdrs in my group

This timing or instancing thing, hard to say what is the issue.

I have gone into the system before them, in an unwinged unpledged ship, and seen several cmdrs, but when they jump in they can see me but not the other cmdrs
Does being in a wing change things

On the flip side I often see random Commander passing through systems I am passing through

It is almost like you instance up when not looking for people, but look for them and nope.

Open is not a gankfest as it is reputed to be. There are systems that have a lot of pvp activities (Nanomam, Lave, etc.), which should be avoided by non-pewpew crowd. I have been trading in most of my play time and i have been pirated only once (since gamma).

Instancing is also an issue. Apparently, for some people, if you are in a wing there's a chance that you wont encounter other players due to match making mechanics, which FD is awared of this issue and should be resolved in the future patches.

You can copy and use it if you want or modify it ^,^

Cool I might get my first ever sig (thanks), now who can add a "drunks of sol" part to it, Mmmm Beer & Bacon, that's a balanced diet :p

Edit

Lol, Mobius & the Bacon Cats, sounds like a band, playing live tonight to the drunks of Sol, perfect I am in!

I am happy people are playing in open, and would hope it is not a gankfest, but they are a problem, as numerous posts have pointed out, and it is causing people to leave Open. As I've said before the gankers are small in number, but if Open wants to shake the image they are getting because of those few than those in Open need to work on combating them and the image they are painting.

Calling the other modes "easy" or "exploiting" or other stupid insults and fallacies are not helping either. Nor is the game Open with the group and solo modes a minor number of players.

Well, I dodged a bullet I guess. I am one Banana though.
Wing versus me would be pretty rough though, being a first timer.
You wouldn't want to put me off open, right?

The fact you're trying to break the instancing kinda makes me worried though, by splitting from your group..
Why would you do that?

I honestly think that private servers need to be removed and solo separated entirely from the open universe. Either you play solo or you play open - progress should never overlap. I like MMOs, I like interaction with human beings. I like having a community. I do not like having cowards who think that Open is some kind of gank fest sitting there in their own little universe doing whatever they want and have their characters influencing people in the open universe.

That's like saying that a person in some universe somewhere outside of ours is changing our economy here in this universe. It's not only idiotic but downright pointless. Either you want to live in open and contribute to it as an open player or you want to go hang out with your NPC buddies and contribute to your own universe. You shouldn't be able to have both.

Solo/PG modes definitely have significantly lower risk than Open, which is why many open player call it an easy mode.
The bad reputation came from over-reaction of those few players that got ganked and complaint in the forum. To enjoy open mode you need to accept that your ships will inevitably be destroyed and you have to prepared for it, not getting attached to your ships.

Another thing, new players should avoid PP at all cost if they want to play in open, since some of us often go to some other Powers' space to undermine and try to kill all CMDRs of the opposing faction.

I have only been destroyed by another CMDR in open once (I play open exclusively), and that was accidental - we both got a bit excited in a CZ and boosted into each other, destroying both our ships.

I enjoy open because I play with my friends, working together to achieve our goals. If my friends play open and I want to interact with them, I have to play open.

I accept that I might see another CMDR in open, who might try to engage me, but you basically never have to engage in open mode if you don't want to. For the record, I don't avoid PvP (I did the Bast medical supplies CG in open). I don't seek it out either. The risks in open are overstated. However, if people want to play in solo, let them. I have no problem whatsoever with people playing in solo or private group and taking their profits into open, or vice versa.

There is no more risk in open than in solo or group than in open, the things that can happen in one can happen in another, this has already been proven a fallacy. Now there is a difference in the risk, i will grant you that, in that humans can do it as well as NPC's. There have been many cries of "more risk we need more reward" and each time they have been shot down because it isn't true, especially since in solo you can't wing up, open you can. Some have said this makes solo more risky but I disagree. People that call solo easy, usually do so because they don't view NPC's as really part of the game, but more of an annoyance and that the "real" game is other humans. This is false as well, but some still hold the belief.

I like how you say those who were ganked were over reacting. One person described being in a sidewinder and jumped by 4 players in a wing... yea.. they were overreacting in thinking they didn't want to put up with that . You can accept that your ship will blow up, but someone else who finally gets a new ship and is put in the hole credit wise after taking it out due to another's jolly. I don't view it the same way you do. And that is the point, there are different views so different modes, we can all be happy, except when players of one mode decide they are the "real" players of the game and try to alter the game to their benefit over the others modes.

I'm glad you like interaction, not everyone does, and some want to interact but not with every Tom, , and Harry. That does not make them a coward. You seem to forget that everyone influences the BGS. Yes, someone playing solo slightly effects the universe and you see it in open. You influences the universe and they see it in solo. They are not "hiding" from you, they are playing the game. I'm sorry they don't feel like playing the game the way you do, but they are still allowed to play it and have as much and influence as you do

No, sorry, but there is way less risk in solo. The lack of player interaction of any kind ensures that.

As for me: That's my point. If you don't want that interaction then you should be isolated from it. That means separating the open and solo universes entirely. <snip> Hell, I've only gotten into PVP unwillingly once and it actually was just fine - the guy was honorable, I did what he said and he let me go after a brief chat about the game.

The idea that they're privy to the same amount of influence as me is downright ignorant. They do not take the same risks. They are sheltered and because of that, they are not participating in the open experience and shouldn't be given the same privileges. In fact, open should have lower bounties just to make that lower risk make sense and to keep people from hopping into solo anytime they don't feel like playing with the rest of us.

I call people cowards because of their common excuses for moving into solo, not because they play solo. If you're running away from the slight chance of some PVP then yes, you are a coward... and a bit paranoid too actually given the low amount of PVP that's actually witnessed by the average open player. Hell, I've only gotten into PVP unwillingly once and it actually was just fine - the guy was honorable, I did what he said and he let me go after a brief chat about the game.

Tovarisch, respectfully, I believe you overstate the risks of open mode and the influence that one player, pootling about in solo shooting NPCs in a RES, can have.

There's also a tautology in your post - "they are sheltered and because of that they are not participating in the open experience."

They're "sheltered" because they're not playing open. Because they're not playing open, they're not participating in the open experience.

Neither premise nor the syllogism establishes that open has increased risk. As I stated above, and supported with the evidence of my own experience, the actual risks in open are minimal anyway unless you seek it out. My greatest enemy is myself. To date, I have managed to kill myself an order of magnitude more often than any player, and the only player that has killed me so far did it by accident!
