I wonder. If all of this stereotyping and backslapping were given the boot, would this derisive thread just fall off the front page and be forgotten? I just wonder....

would be nice, WOUld be nice as well if people could enjoy a game without trying to drastically alter it

You know I like your posts; I rep you enough for them. But... most of the "stereotyping" falls into two categories:

1. Open/only/don't-know-what-they're-called stereotypes all solo/group players as [fill in names from Cody's List)

2. Solo & group players calling "pirates" PKers.

The semantic confusion of #1 is players trying to beat around some imaginary bush so as not to come right out and say "The only way to play is pew-pew everyone." So "true piracy" gets lumped in with antisocial PKing. However, that is mostly the fault of the players themselves muddying the description of their activities, or standing up for obviously-nasty players because "hey they R pirats we shud helps dem!"

The "evidence" for "cowardly" "hiding" and other nasty, pin-pricky posts by #1 is non-existent. Most every poster in this thread advocating solo is saying, "the game mechanics work just fine" and responding to calls for modifying open to be "betterer" by taking away things from the solo/group side. They aren't hiding; most of them, like me, prefer a slower, longer playstyle or have technical network reasons for playing solo.

#1 gets extremely nasty with their mouths. It is an old game. A player will pick-pick-pick-pick-pick at you with verbal slights, provocations and jabs until a normal player has had enough and pokes back. Then the bully says, "see? you're just like me inside!"

What they will never admit is that the other, "normal player" doesn't come out of the gate like that. The bully does. Taking only so much abuse without fighting back is what a normal person does, in real life or the forums or the game. It is the orientation that differs.

Stereotypes exist because they can often be true.

For what it's worth, it would be lovely if we'd all just stop posting and go hang out in the respective Wolf and Bacon threads. We'll cool ourselves down and unwind and generally have a happy old time, but I've very little doubt that someone (that isn't content with the status quo) will do something to make this thread of terpitude and misery rise again.

Come on kids, let's all go get an orange soda. Please?

Nope Grape Nehi

Okay then! How should we make Open PvE without lasers that can't magically not hit other player ships? Would it be explained as programming of the targeting system - by being member of the Pilots Federation one automatically accepts a script that stops weapons from firing if another PF ship wanders into the sights?

Sorted!

What about ramming then?

:D S

PS: I'm sure this has been suggested before. But this thread is soooooo loooooooong...

There have been suggestions of a system that would allow no damage Weapons/Ramming between players. My suggestion has always been the honor system, until you break it, then the offender looses access. It is a simple system that would require no rewriting, just some management. That management could be done by player volunteers mush like how these forums are moderated.

Accidental hits can happen, they can happen in Mobius as well. If people are doing it on purpose then they get punished, if it is accidental.. they have to deal with the wanted tag and fine?

This works too

Actually I was thinking of this exchange from Babylon 5 Season 2.

SHERIDAN
I do think there are some things we don't understand. If we'd be back in time a thousand years, trying to explain this place to people, they could only accept it in terms of magic.

ELRIC
Then perhaps it is magic; the magic of the human heart, focused and made manifest by technology. Every day you here create greater miracles than the burning bush.

SHERIDAN
Maybe . . . but God was there first and he didn't need solar batteries and a fusion reactor to do it.

ELRIC
Perhaps. Perhaps not. And it is within that ambiguity that my brothers and I exist. We are dreamers, shapers, singers, makers. We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, crystal and scanner, the way our fore-runners studied grimoires and spells. Holographic demons and invocations of equations, those are the tools we employ. And we know many things.

Might not even need much management, if there is an in-game system to spot players from NPCs (we already have pretty hollow radar blips): You hit a player, find yourself disconnecting next time you enter hyperspace or supercriuse and "PvE Open" will be greyed out when you log in again. And it will forever be so unless you can convince the moderators and player you shot at that it was an accident.

It would be a "Gentlemans Ironman" mode I guess.

Anything like that would be fine. I just believe there should be an option out there for the players seeking that kind of environment, but are not aware of it with the current system.

I suggest strongly that you read the statements from the developers themselves regarding the game modes and the fact that all players, in all game modes and on all platforms affect the single shared galaxy state:

I love how we cant criticize the holy game design in its holy land (the forums)

Seriously, this thread is about open vs solo. If we cant discuss the merits of how solo detracts from open, what is the point? - you keep coming in here saying "LOL NOPE SOLO IS GGGGG"

Just because it's in the game or they want it too be - does not mean it's GOOD or not bad. Seriously

There are + and - for both sides.

We certainly can discuss the relationship between the modes. That quote is just one defense of the status quo, but by far, not the only one. Solo doesn't detract from open. It just offers another style of play for those that want that kind of experience. Nothing more.

Indeed. Solo does not detract from Open. Groups do not detract from Open. Open does not detract from itself. The only thing detracting from Open, are unpleasant people who either ridicule weaker players (hide back in Solo u n00b!) or antagonize everyone (DIZ MI GILD SISTEM GO AWAI!). Players in Open who don't engage in such things are not detracting from it.
