The biggest problem I see is that there is a lack of incentive to play in Open. All you get for your choice is risk: piracy and docking queues, for example.

I think there needs to be incentives to lure in the carebear. They are going to lose ships, so the rewards need to be higher to keep bringing them in.

Some people managed to derail the Open PvE thread.
The main thread became locked, so the people talking about it continued the conversation here.

Because a PVE mode breaks from marketings "Blaze your own trail", with way to many caveats of what you can and cannot do to others while Blazing!

You already have

Open
Private
Solo

Why? Why would you even care where anyone else played? You can hang with those that share your interests, while others pursue theirs.

The excitement and the player created content is what makes Open the only mode of note!

But becareful of using the word Carebear, it is offensive to the PVE community.

Open is not the only mode in which player created content can exist - unless you mean PvP (and even that can, as you know, occur in Private Groups).

Indeed - please do not use the word "carebear" when relating to players who simply do not enjoy PvP.

Blaze your own trail has nothing to do with the modes, people can and do "blaze" in Solo and in private groups (I play in Mobius or a friends).
A PvE Mode would allow those who want to "blaze" in an MMO under co-op gameplay with other people to enjoy the game with others.

"excitement" is what each person finds exciting to them. YOUR excitement, is not everyones.

There is also the point to consider that CQC will be a more level playing field and will rely on even number contests and player skill.
-
Some pvpers will be very happy about this... some may not?
-
If a player's idea of fun is overpowering a weaker opponent through force of numbers rather than skill, CQC may be the last thing they want to do, especially if it retains your CMDR name on any leader boards...-
-
"Fearless gank squadder CMDR Ruinzy0rg4m3" sitting with a 0-10 record is not going to help his ego :p (sweeping generalisation I know)

And, this pushes my point, again. The PvP players looking for 'proper' PvP will play in CQC...minimal wait times, more controls against cheating, more competitive, and you receive payment for your efforts...the rest will remain in Open...creating an even worse experience for everyone in Open. If a PvE mode is created...the only reason to go into Open is to see how long it takes to have someone gank you....just do away with it.

You make it sound like;

Which is funny, as that is how some describe it now.

Hmmm, I'd like to know where all these gankers are in the open world because I'm certainly not coming across them. Hang on, you must mean those players that interdict you once in a blue moon (instancing allowing) in groups of three or four and try to kill you, but they can't because you bothered to work out how to beat them. And regarding Care Bears, I have a pink fluffy one that sits next to me in my ship with the sole job of making me lattes and shouting "lets get 'im boys!" when it sees Maginvash in system :D

If you claim that a PVE mode breaks from marketing's "Blaze your own trail" then the same is fully true with OPEN.

Look around these forums, and this thread. There are enough that many players feel the attery of Open is not worth being there. Ask around, I'll let those folks speak for themselves. When the dedicated PvP players go to CQC...all that will be left is attery. Glad to know you aren't one of those that is playing that type of character...you are providing educational opportunities with your chums and care bear, right?

Just think about Open with a higher percentage of droogs doing the interdiction..and you will see the problem. If you hate player interdictions now...wait until after CQC releases...

You may enjoy things like blockades and restrictions on travel. Other people may find them boring. What works for you will be dull and tedious to others.

I've seen the original Star Wars, and like playing at being Han Solo, going where I like, trading what I like.

If you've seen the Phantom Menace, and want to be the Trade Federation, that's fine, but don't expect me to play along with you.

Diversity exists in real life, and the current design of Elite reflects that.

Cheers,

Phos.

The PvP players looking for 'proper' PvP will play in CQC

From my perspective "proper PvP" is completely incompatible with staged bouts and deliberately 'fair' fights.

I will dabble in CQC, but I highly doubt I'll prefer it to standard Open play, for precisely the same reason that someone who wants to play a tactical shooters or RTS wargame would probably be dissatisfied with a FIFA title or a boxing game. The former simulate or abstract warfare, the later simulate the sanitized, euphemistic, abstractions of warfare we call sports.

Basically, I want to participate in space warfare, space skirmishes, space raiding, space blockade running, space self-defense, and occasionally even space running for my life...not space boxing, football, or capture the flag.

We keep trying to explain that to em.. but it doesn't sink in.

This always confounds me. To have a blockade, you need to have an opposing set of players happy to try and run the blockade. If nobody wants to do that, you aren't blockading, you are flying around in SC chatting on TS... This is the beauty of ED in that you can organise any meta game you choose, so long as you have people willing to participate. BUT they have the choice and the means to not participate, if that is their choice :)

What if you declared a war.... and nobody came?
