2) the folks quoting dev statements to them that it's not going to happen.

that's the mix with a few minor impurities thrown in here and there.

Also, I've decided to have a look in the Guilds thread, and shock horror, wouldn't you know it - pro forced open also seem to be pro guild as well.

So it seems, they want everyone out in the open so they can chase people down like a pack of dogs after a fox.
Glad the Devs have stated it's a no. Though for how long they'll stick to that is another question.

An example would be Sony and the dreaded SWG NGE.... 2 weeks after an expansion came out and with little to no warning, until a leak broke the news to the players, Sony completely altered the core of the game. The firestorms erupted on the forums and elsewhere. Ratings tanked and Sony got in hot water with the BBB and other agencies. Sony finally started issuing refunds, mainly on the expansion and the # of players who played SWG took a nose dive.. the numbers did come up later but never to Pre-NGE levels and game finally went under. Still hoping SWGEMU gets original back up and running good.

Just registered for SW Battlefront Alpha. Looks like Starwars meets Bungies Destiny.

Why does it feel that if that is the case they are trying to make EvE with a joystick?

I find it just amusing when folk simply fail to understand why Mobius is a working group which has proven itself to create the harmony that players actually want from the group. I'm a relatively new member to their private group, and yes there are times when i accidentally click solo (out of old habit), and sometimes the same goes for open (i'm exploring, chance of meeting a player in the part of space where i am right now is prob. less than 0.0000000001%) Either way, if i don't click mobius lately, its either misclick or simply that i accepted that i would a) not see other mobius members (in solo) or b) i would have to be on my guard for any hollow marks on my radar map as they all are potentially hostile or with unknown intent.

Things that have put me off open :

The idiot who shot explorers down at Sagittarius A*: tbh, lately this has sealed my decision that open is not the place i'll spend my exploration time.. sure i am unlikely to see anyone but i figured with 2 months of exploration data on board, why would i take the risk.. not for someone to get cheap thrills and wet undercrackers out of shooting an explorer for fits and giggles. No, i value the time i've spent exploring and those types of pilot can just do one.

Large pirate groups: The odd pirate here or there operating alone or with a friend or two sure.. but massive groups coordinated on ts or forum.. no thanks. I fly alone.. mostly.. i am perfectly sociable, but i play elite dangerous the way i used to play elite. I have also witnessed countless times the absolute appalling attitude these people have on a facebook group i'm a member of. Prior to these groups showing their ugly faces, the group i was in was helpful, fun and great all the time.. these days, you can't go a day or two without reading a verbal war between their members and other players who just happen to disagree with them. Don't get me wrong i applaud the roleplaying that some of the groups do, but the reality for me is they are in a group much larger than me (alone) so no way would i survive when most likely they already have wingmates on their way in case they could not take me (or you one-to-one). So in private group or solo i don't see these people.. i'm happy they are doing their thing in open, they can do i there to their hearts content, but not in the game mode i prefer to play on, and that being my choice, i'm happy with, and no amount of goading, taunting, back-lipping or otherwise will ever make me seethe like they are hoping and i won't click open just to please them.

The experienced pilots who shoot new players: Yep, they get the best ship they can, A-Spec it out, know all the tricks in the book, then proceed to go out to the parts of space where new players are most likely to be, then blow them up for no reason and just for laughs and not just once or twice.. multiple times. Calling the new player all sorts too? really big.. i've seen posts from such new players, and this kind of gaming does nothing to encourage people to enjoy the game at all, it just leaves them thinking what on earth have they got themself into.. and its the new-game experience like that which drives the players mostly to solo. You'll have a tougher time enticing them back to open than the decision path which led them to leave open to go to solo.

The simple fact that multi-player is not the deciding factor that makes me enjoy elite dangerous.. it might be for some folk, but the elite i remember and enjoyed playing so much was not mp.. so I don't feel like i'm losing much if anything by playing in group or solo.. the amount of players doesn't worry me, its the interactions that do.. the unpredictable nature of folk is not something i look for when i'm carrying so much exploration data.

The general attitude from people in open to people who like private groups or playing in solo: Call us carebears as much as you like, i find that laughable only in that it doesn't make me feel at all bad. I just think that you folk can't stand to see people not dancing in front of your crosshairs to provide you with your pvp pleasure. We are not crash test dummies, we are not here to serve your gamestyle.. most of us have limited playtime, we don't play all day every day (well at least i don't!), so when i play, i play the game the way i want to play it.

Will i play open though? do i hate it that much? I will play open if i have a ship i don't mind losing and one that packs a fair punch enough to fight back. I won't be in open in a trade ship, i won't be in open in my exploration ship (or at least not if i suspect i'm in a high traffic area).. if and when you see me in open, it will not be in my asp explorer, i'll likely have returned to regular space and have a decent ship and have practiced with loadouts already. When you see me in open, i'll have accepted the risk when clicking it.. but if i find open to be just a chaotic mess, then well, at least i'll have give it another go, but its up to the pilots already playing open to help create that play experience, but just shooting for no reason or using exploits (which i know exist!), the my time in open will be short.. very short.

hope you enjoy it, I tinker with SWTOR or SWGEMU if I need my Star Wars fix... though I am tempted to get X-wing and Tie-Fighter from GOG to see how they do with voice attack and a H.O.T.A.S. when it gets here ^,^

Maybe I will repeat myself, but to all "Open only" fans:

1. The ED soon will be available to XBox players. This is the fact number one.
2. The XBox version will have the same "play as you want, all things in game are for all players" idea/motto/ethos. This is a fact number two.
3. The Xbox version will be available in Solo only for the owners of Silver account (default and free) and Solo/Open/Group for the owners of Gold (premium, extra paid) account. This is a fact number three.

If you, "Open only" advocates do the math from points 1-3 you can clearly see, that there will never exist any "Open only" mode. Simply because the XBox player base with Silver account cannot play "Open only" and thus cannot play as mentioned in point 2. - "play as you want, all things in game are for all players".

Personally, I do not know, why the debat about something so simple can take days, week, months...

Extremly well said and agree fully. Plus I am proud when they call me a Carebear.. though it should be a Caremouse :p

Things that have put me off open :/snip/ very short.

Isn't it wonderful when you play the game the way it was designed! You learned to make the proper choice at the proper time to enjoy your game to the fullest...congratulations. Can you help others see the light...and explain your choices and reasons to them? Playing lone wolf is a role. You do not like stranger danger! So you properly avoid it. Again, congrats.

Ha ha , love it.

This is the impression I get. They're worse than the WoW crowd - it's like they want every space game to be the very game they're leaving... which makes no sense to me.

I can't comment; so please don't think I commented.

because despite eves MANY MANY flaws it does one thing absolutely spot on.. it gives control of a big portion of their game universe (null sec) to the players, this in turn generates wars for sovereignty/content/emergent gameplay/dynamic gameplay/consequences/social interaction(noone is forced ito this)/ the ability for players to have a worthwhile impact on the universe

Because they are?

It's not even just with space sims. I've seen the same thing with other kinds of MMOs in Alpha/Beta, where players mainly interested in guild territorial control will keep asking for this to be implemented, usually complete with ways for the guild that currently controls a territory to prevent other players from entering without fighting their way through and/or ways to impose penalties/levies/taxes on everyone within the territory they control.

What they seem to forget is that this kind of gameplay needs to be a core element of any game in which it appears — and to be clearly advertised as such — because it has the potential to ruin the game for everyone that is not into this kind of inter-guild competition. Adding it after the fact to a game that has already shipped tends to be a very bad idea.

You speak as if that was enjoyed by everyone. It isn't. Many of the backers and players, in fact, react badly to suggestions of bringing EVE systems into ED.

BTW, PvP in EVE is non-consensual, so — contrary to what you said — social interaction is by definition forced, with no recourse to those that don't want it except to just not play. That alone makes it worthless as entertainment for me, even without taking into account that I certainly don't want to play as a piece in a huge Galactic Risk game.

In Elite, which is the game we are playing here - Players don't own space. They don't own anything apart from ships, and they can only fly one at a time. This is a good thing. Sovereignty is held by Powers. Players can choose to align themselves with Powers, or can choose to entirely ignore them. Content is produced by people called Developers. This is a good thing. Emergent/Dynamic gameplay is a direct result of Consequence from both Developer action and Player action/inactions. This is a good thing. Peeps can play for their Powers, they can play by themselves, they can play in groups with each other - everyone's actions affect the Background Simulation that ALL players share.

Social interaction is up to the individual player, wether they choose to befriend people, join groups, play in Solo, pootle around in Open on their own, or forge a large guild to completely pwn every instance they can get their UDP packets into. It's up to every other individual as to what level they want to share in that interaction.

Everyone's impact on the universe is worthwhile, but I truly believe that those most wanting to impact the universe are those missing out on enjoying said universe the most.

Isn't it great? I am an early backer of ED and SC, here I can play solo and co-op, in SC I can turn off pvp players. Life is good. But I'm all for them making an open play game for all in both games. Dayum I'm selfish. :(
