I'm reading the words.... but they just don't make sense.... Let me put this metaphorically. A child, has candy in front of him at free will. But doesn't want it......*faints*

LOL. Sorry, terrible analogy. Some kids actually don't like candy. And besides, too much of it is very bad for them. ;)

No, this is the open vs solo thread. I don't want to join a club or group or guild, I would just like more of you shadow players to come 'outside'. That is all.

But... But... We don't want to play with you. :(

He can't understand.
He wouldn't even try to understand if you tell him that "open" doesn't resemble "candy" for you but "pure vinegar".
Some people are just that way... you can meet them everyday out on the streets.
Their likings are "oviously" what everyone else should like. If someone doesn't, he has to be insane.

You know and i know... yet some people don't.

True. And it shows that the "foodchain" doesn't work.

True. But higher bounties (and otherwise harder punishment) might drive "pirates" away... and so won't stabilize the environment for (PvP) BH at all.

I really can't think of a working solution.
But to be honest, i don't spend much time on finding one :(

FDev just needs to do away with the idea of PvP....or PvE...until then...there will always be problems. The game is more catered to the PvE side of things so this would make more sense and be easier. No friendly fire between PC pilots.

Ha if people are willing to pirate now, with the low profits, rampant combat logging, and Hit or miss cargo, there's not much that will deter pirates. I mean short of magic, invincible police that make piracy impossible.

Well it would if nothing changed regarding piracy to balance it.

There should be npcs with good cargo that are worth pirating that you could make a living off and the risk would be a higher bounty. Right now there's no point in going for npcs due to the crappy cargo and players are the only "guaranteed" safe bet (as in they carry stuff worth taking).

Right now you can find T9's in SSS being guarded by multiple anacondas. Unfortunately these T9's only carry about 50t of food an medicine . . . If they were laden with something worth stealing then you'd have pirate wings attacking these convoy instead of other players.

I never encountered a game where a mix of PvP/PvE did work out well... not if the rules of what "mode" has the preference were unclear.
But those were mainly "balancing" factors. How to balance "classes", weapons and other equipment for both.
Here it's a bit different.... but nonetheless not less complicated.

I suppose we could always take it as a compliment that he wants to play with us so badly. ;)

Maybe the galaxy really is a cold, desolate empty place. (I'd still check my router / setup though. Most Open and Group people seem to find at least some people to play with.)

I'm with you on this one.
But there are many players in the game (and here in the thread) that wouldn't even bother with NPC piracy.
They want PvP piracy (and like i said before, i can even understand that).
I just wanted to say that this won't work as a profession.

I would like if piracy got some loving.
Just because it's not my gamestyle i don't think it should stay behind in terms of gameplay.

Some have Hafnium, some have Unknown Artefacts. :) But yes, more and better NPCs of all types/roles is something for everyone.

This is exactly correct. Please do take it as a compliment, I do want to play with you nice folk. That's all I'm askin. I hear that you all say you want to play alone(Mobius?) or that you're really REALLY not scared of player-pirates (comes up a lot with soloers.....odd). I also hear you don't like candy, but you love vinegar. You like taking people to the water and hope they drink to koolaid.... I mean.... punch.... er.... (its safe I promise).

So let me sum up my debate, and only my debate. I just want to play nice with you nice folk. I'm the kid outside on the warm summer day, knocking on your door wanting to play at the park, but the park is empty so I came here to 'your house' to see if you wanted to play. That is all. I'll go play in the park by myself. maybe another day(update) we'll play together, at the park, in the sun, nice like....

Sorry LordRed but Steve doesn't want to play out today, he's in his room playing Elite. (Technically right now I'm in my room hiding from his kids because they will need feeding again really soon and I've only just say down from washing up after tea!)

All good ;)

But you just have to accept that some kids just won't respond to your knocking and keep reading their book ;)

It's pointless trying to get die hard solo/group players in to open because they just don't want to be there and that's fine, they're where they want to be and that's why they bought the game.

Regarding foodchain I believe pvp piracy will always be viable, it just won't pay much and there needs to be more viable npc piracy to supliment a pirate's earning and take the heat off of the players.

Pvp bounty hunting on the other side isn't really sustainable under the current game mechanics. There's few real pirates and the ones who do piracy are adept at escaping.

Until the current criminality system is changed that won't change either. Pirates should be getting a lot higher bounties to encourage bounty hunters to put the effort in to get them. No bh will risk a few mil in rebuy to go after a pirate with a couple of 100g bounty.

maybe FD could create NPC convoys?.

4 vultures 2 anaconda's 2 FDL's and a type 9... (or variants)

get stuck into that instead of a wing of 4 going after 1 ship

I'm sure you do want to play nice with us. That's sweet. :) I truly hope you find people to fly and play with, truly. By all accounts there are lots of people who are out there already and who I'm sure want to play nice with you too. Go and find them, and in this day and age I'd be very wary of knocking on stranger's doors to see if they want to go to the park with you!

This ^^

I did try piracy vs NPCs for a few days and made nothing until I found a "Seeking Luxuries" with 3 Type 9s that had some half decent stuff in them.
Also, the prices for black market goods is awful ( <- forums won't let me use the words I want to here).

As far as I can see, piracy is the only profession in ED that cannot be subsidised via NPC interactions between PvP encounters.

It is a shame though, that some open advocates feel the need to come here and be insulting and name calling, as it is drowning out your points and hard work here Distance.
(and I know some Solo/Group advocates are no better, but they seem to have gotten bored of the discussion and left from what I can see - thankfully)

I remember you distinguishing between 'real' pirates, as those who don't pay their fines, and the type who pay their fines but still call themselves pirates (forgive me if I've misquoted, it was a while back) - disregarding how difficult it is to be a pirate for a moment, do you think it would work if there was some kind of, three strikes and out system? I.e., if you kill three clean players you remain wanted, so that you either continue your career as a fugitive (with say, a starting bounty of 20,000, which would remain when you respawn after dying) or if you feel that passionately about being a 'clean' player, you 'clear save' and start again. Might seem a bit harsh, but it would make people think carefully before shooting that third 'clean' ship. I say this with view to making piracy viable in the game - making improvements to the pirate role (perhaps better cargo scoops, rewards for shooting down 'security' ships that match the equivalent bounties on pirates, buy yeah, tricky stuff I know :) )
Oh, this was the solo v open thread? Er...Napoloeon Solo?...Han Solo?...I'll get my coat :/

I've seen things like that in SSS.

well it would satisfy the need for destruction...
it would be a serious challenge
there could well be a risk of being destroyed
and the reward could be nice enough to satisfy the whole wing.
but the main thing is,
it might make sole trading ships a lot less attractive to pirates.

i think it ticks all the box's.

Maybe you soloers can answer this. What's the single most reason to play solo?
Simple. Many of us researched it beforehand and bought a single player game instead of an MMO. A fantastic single player I might add. Save for Thargoids, it replicates the original game with advanced graphics and sound perfectly, which is exactly what I wanted.

Now about those thargoids....
