Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

In my experience - true pirating doesn't turn people away - it makes the game fun. I'm not a pirate, but having the experience of another Commander demanding your cargo or something nasty will happen - is a game of both skill and wits. It's extremely entertaining.

What isn't fun though - are the mindless pew-pew crew. There is no skill or wit involved in those encounters - and many Commanders have taken to logging off or alternative means of getting rid of them.

The solution, to me, appears simple. Mindlessly kill every pew-pew you see :D

Agreed. Although I haven't been bothered by any pew-pews yet, but I wouldn't log off. I have quite big lasers. ;)

Blah blah pvp blah blah. Is that all people whine about? How about the fact that solo and even group play effect the online as a whole? You can roam around in your safety blanket and still change the outcome of the universe. The modes should be their own separate world. If FD can afford to run one single server for solo, group and open, I'm sure they can afford to have two more servers for solo and group. And if they can't they should get out of the online business.

LOL - safety blanket? Open group guilds are the safety blanket here my friend. If you can't comprehend the fact that every player, no matter how they play - has some effect on the galaxy, then perhaps you should have done a bit more reading up on the game. It's not about FD affording servers for solo, group and open - that entire notion is nonsensical given the mechanics of the game. It's not incredibly difficult to understand.

What it boils down to, no matter the rationale the open players use, is this..." dangit, I don't have people I can ruin the game for". I think the majority of those complaining are not solo or group players but those dedicated pirate types that want to force everyone into their arena. When I purchase a load of gold or superconductors at station A I want to be able to sell it at station B without someone interdicting me and broadcasting "drop your cargo or die" ..if that's how they get their jollies...too bad.

Here's a thought....FD should spring for another server and transfer all the pirate types so they can have their open pvp environment and kill each other to their hearts content.

Quite. That's why there is all the moaning about how 'unfair' shield cells are despite the game providing all the weapons and gear to allow a good pilot to laugh at shields. I am happy playing whatever mode I feel like at the time. That's the game I bought.

But if the PvP tail starts wagging the dog then I will stay in solo, pending Star Citizen or one of the other good looking space sims on the way.

It's the same every in every mmo with PvP. The minority that see that as the main focus keep insisting the game shapes itself to them.

Well, this isn't that sort of game. It's a game for everyone from 8 to 80 and if we want to choose how we play from session to session then that's what we do because that was the game we bought into.

And if us using shield cells inconveniences PvP types then that's just too bad. Go learn to shoot rail guns straight instead of trying to get devs to change things.

first: it's not a single server... but a cluster.

second: I'm sure, if you can't get along with the rules of a game you can find one that you like. And if you can't you should get out of online gaming...

Guys, guys. The game is just fine the way it is. I can switch the modes the way I like it now. I paid for this game and nobody can tell me what mode to play. I'm still going to get wrecked by imaginary griefers, because let's face it even with all tools to avoid combat I'm still horrible in space sims. And once it happens I'll start the rage quitting thread condemning the game and demanding to ban for life everyone who shot me.

You really don't get it....
I'm not playing solo to be "safe" (else i would play with the PvE group).
In fact, if i ever get out of solo it will be "open" not "group".
I like PvP, i spent about 50% of beta just looking for someone to shoot me.

Sticking to the argument that people just use the solo mode for being "safe" doesn't make you look smarter after a while....

stop chewing my sock... enraged rabbit!

the white knight is strong with this one. Man you guys are so pathetic you'll defend this stupid decision until the end. It's bad for gameplay. End of story but your so wrapped up on your "we can play how we want" that your ignorant to the fact it's a crappy system. Solo mode should be in their own special little universe that does not effect the outcome if the open mode. Open mode should be itsown univers and group play should he its own universe. Keep defending because once the population dwindles into nothing and no one bit a few 1984 warriors are buying decals the game will come to a halt with no updates, no patches and no new content.

No...it's only stupid to YOU. No...it's only bad for YOUR gameplay.
If you're so really upset that ED is not YOUR game and everything in it molds to YOUR preferences then the only solution is put up or shut up.

I got on the same level. Throw some bone here =)

yes, i got carried away... sorry.
but that's exactly why i prefer playing solo.
you know people like me from the news.
neighbours tell how nice and calm he is...always helpful...
and then he packs a sportsbag full of weapons and ammo, goes out and shoots some innocent.

as long as i'm in this mental state, i refuse to play in open mode.
other players shouldn't suffer from my personal problems.

some actually nice people roleplay a pirate, a serial killer or a psycho.
i'm trying to roleplay a sane person ;)

Totally agree with you here. If someone RPs a sane person in Open he's doing it wrong.

Jokes aside my point is this game could be a little bit harsher. It's too forgiving. One of the steps is the mode's segregation.

So i have your official allowance to play solo? ;)

I was never against anyone who plays solo. More options - more money for company, better updates we'll have. What I personally find lacking is the ability to switch modes during chase or combat. It's unnatural and breaks the game ambiance.

In-game group switching has not yet been implemented - what you seem to be disgruntled with is players logging out (or possibly combat logging) and is nothing to do with group switching.

I honestly think you're reaching a bit here. I'm honestly not getting on what basis you say it's bad for gameplay. I don't see a scintilla of difference, from an individual players point of view, between somebody in a different mode effecting the universe or somebody in a different instance of the same mode having that effect. Either way you can't interact with them but their actions have an effect on the world you're playing in. Maybe I'm just being dense here and not getting it but if a player cant tell the difference between an effect caused by somebody in another mode or one cause by somebody in a different instance, how can they honestly say it has an effect on the gameplay they experience? If you can't tell 'em apart then there is no effect on the gamepley.

It's more than this. If it's just logging off the player would log back in to the exactly same location. When you switch to solo you submerge to another reality and bypass the points of control.

as much as i'm defending "switching"...

i would be cool with a "switch timer", limited switches per day, a better way to prevent "combat logging"....
