The same location, yes - the same instance - possibly / possibly not.

The risk still remains with instancing.

as much as i'm defending "switching"...

i would be cool with a "switch timer", limited switches per day, a better way to prevent "combat logging"....

One of the rational proposals is to be able to switch only while docked.

Would these be the "points of control" that DB repeatedly stated during game development that ED was explicitly designed not to have? Choke points where "control" can be exerted do not exist in ED and the game mechanics are designed to make any attempt at one trivial to bypass

This is where the paradox comes in place. ED is the sandbox heavily relying on the player's generated content while with the current design it denies players with such content and this is why I think the current state is bad for the game.

it's about PvE generated contend... and that's where the misunderstandings begin.

2 and 3 should have no influence on open players. It is absurd that these players can enter conflict zones, tip the balance of power, and be invulnerable to players of opposing factions.

This is the subject of personal interpretation. For me PVE generated content is the introduction of coop dungeons - the successful redone to death game design that i'd never sign up for personally.

I see where you're coming from, but the fact remains that there are some kinds of "emergent gameplay" common in several other games that FD explicitly didn't want to emerge in ED. Control points of this kind are a case in point. FD have consistently stated that they will not countenance changes to the game that will make these effective. It's no paradox. Every multiplayer game has mechanics that make some behaviors effective and others impractical. This is the set that FD have chosen for this game and the rules of this sandbox. That isn't good or bad except in a purely subjective sense for each of us. Being so subjective, it becomes purely a matter of personal opinion and while yours or mine are equally valid they remain simply opinions and neither of us can claim to be "right" in any objective sense.

i know what you mean by looking at your avatar.
i played EvE since it's beta ;)

but this is a very different game here.
i, personally, like the PvE heavy structure.
and there is no need for coop content (at least none that puts "coop" over "loner")

don't get me wrong, i'm not against players that want to cooperate... but there shouldn't be any benefit besides being more safe in a group (PvE wise).
if a mission is laid out for a group of five and they can do it with two...fine, let them earn some money.
but NEVER... NEVER introduce some form of "loot" that loners can't get to.

In this case FD will take the hard road of providing the content itself to avoid the dull repetitive gameplay. I'm not sure they will be able to pull it off with no subscription model because obviously the current mission system does not cut it.

I'll ask you the same question I asked Caboose up the thread a few... Why is it absurd? You as a player cannot tell the difference between a player in another mode and in another instance (in fact there is NO difference, because all the modes do is change who you could possibly be instanced with) so how does it make any difference?

Well, solo or group or open?

Balance this with the counterpoint....getting the most "fun" out of the game.

I play in a rather underpopulated area, yet for 24 hours I had what others have tried to achieve, a full blown civil war with conflict zones, checkpoints, radically changed bulletin boards and missions to interdict civil war players.

I play mainly solo.

It was a great 24 hours in Mokosh, everything I wanted. I played open a couple of times, I saw one other player. Yet I had advertised the civil war and gave regular updates.

My conclusion? Simply people play how they wish to play, they decide what mode to play in, how to interact and what they wish to achieve.

Sounds good to me. live and let live.

We have two polar MMO game designs Eve and WOW. ED is trying to be in the middle. For me it's interesting to see how it will work out even though I'm a digger for the pvp interaction and I'd like to see more options and content than the pirate/trader scenario.

i don't think ED wants to be between EvE and WOW (i played both for years).
"between" means two dimensional thinking...
it's something new and people have to get used to it.

You really don't get it....
I'm not playing solo to be "safe" (else i would play with the PvE group).
In fact, if i ever get out of solo it will be "open" not "group".
I like PvP, i spent about 50% of beta just looking for someone to shoot me.

Sticking to the argument that people just use the solo mode for being "safe" doesn't make you look smarter after a while....

Though there are some exceptions, there are no other valid reasons for sticking to solo apart from either having a bad connection or being grumpy or old or scared of talking to people not known personally. The main reason i have seen for people preferring open at any one time, is by being scared witless of mythical pvp 'boogeymen' and hulks of burning CMDR type 6's floating around everywhere. I don't want to argue anymore about solo or open being better or worse, just let the devs handle it after this mind numbingly monotonous duscussion drawn out well beyond its actual merit. If they have bothered to read it they must by now understand every possible inch of the argument from both sides.

The real point i'm making, is people can bang on about "play it your way" all they like, and yes you can of course play it your way as the game was intended. Just that some people choose to play with a 'safety blanket' as someone described earlier, while some don't. Its a simple truth. Some people just don't like hearing that, and so try and dress it up as a game style or something else edgy and liberal sounding.

Its not.

What it actually is, is just people simply hiding from the open environment and the only truly dynamic aspect of this game, for fear of loss, be it loss of credits, or loss of time. If this applies to you, stop crying everytime someone says it for what it is. Even if you fall into the category of the exceptional reasons to play solo, there are still legions of people who happily trade solo for a perceived lack of threat over open, be it justified or not. That is hiding in its purest form. Embrace it, it is what it is, just stop trying to label it as something else.

Though there are some exceptions, it sounds like a sound theory. There are no other valid reasons for sticking to solo apart from either having a bad connection or being grumpy or old or scared of talking to people not known personally

You make it sound as a fact where it isn't.
You don't know me, you don't know my reasons.
You don't know my mental state.
You don't know anything about human behaviour besides your very limited horizon...

Wow great statement adding nothing of any substance, with standard 'edgy' video to seem cool. Good effort. First impression would mark you as a safety blanket fan.

Ok lets try this. Reasons to play solo:

A) Internet connection is poor
B) Grumpy and does not like intereacting with others
C) Wants to hide from the bad men and prevent loss of assets/and or precious playing time from threats not present in solo.

Ok so which do you think is more likely for the majority of solo players?

I have no issue with any of these reasons, same as i have no issue with solo play. If you had bothered reading my post you would see i am just pointing out that you can dress it up how you like, but a lot of people just want to hide. Plain and simple. Fine with me. If the cap fits wear it, if it doesn't, well done you.

EDIT: also, dont cut the parts of my post out just to suit your crap statements.

and still none of your A) B) C) hits my reason to play solo...

and i cut out whatever i want to respond to.

I could reply with some baseless assumptions as to the mindset and presumed motivations of the people that go out of their way to ruin other peoples fun, but as that is against the rules of this thread and I don't want to get tagged with the same ban I expect you're going to get so Im going to abide by the rules of the thread. Attempting to shame and denigrate people simply for having fun in their own way is childish. Grow up, and enjoy your vacation.
