Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

The only problem I've got is that the game was advertised as an MMO. I've bought it, my friend has bought it and we tried to "run some missions together". It has not even crossed our mind to check if this mechanic is implemented in a fully released MMO in 2015. This is hilarious. There was not a single MMO that I know of that this would not be a feature after release. Right now we have to go back to EVE and Archeage to actually be able to do anything on coop. You know, the real , working coop, where we can actually see each others enemy, shoot/kill it and share profits via game mechanics. Not some imaginary coop.

A reasonable request, it is a little disappointing and the Beta club getting it first is a little cheeky as it should have been in the box at release

What about "background simulation". Also 'very patchy' and 'being worked on' right ? Is there any system in this game that isn't a complete placeholder ?

- NPCs ? Nope. Completely meaningless.
- Background simulation ? Mostly does not work, and what does is completely meaningless (again, tons of threads about this)
- Trade routes ? Non functional.
- Co-op ? Not even possible due to bugs / design.
- Exploration ? Don't even get me started on the abysmal amount of actual 3D assets this game launched with. After you've seen 10 systems - you've pretty much seen it all.

Can I ask a serious question? Do you like anything about anything?

Trade Routes - I trade half the time and do great on Trade Routes. The background simulation means that supply and demand changes and if I'm not concentrating it nerf my own trade and end up having to search for somewhere else to off-load the goods. Someone got there before me. Surely that's integrations. Are you talking about the galactic map that shows import/export? You have to be smarter than that.

Exploration? Er, that's cause the Galaxy in our neck of the woods is pretty much uniform until you get to specific places...

Are you just trying to get a reaction or is there something we can help you with?

I think the Open play should have a larger impact on the economics of the game as well, otherwise you will have player blockades having no change to systems

So you are saying that testing this feature is a bad idea? Normally, releasing untested game updates is considered a bad plan.

If you do think it should be tested before release, do you have a better way to get that testing done? The beta group already exists, and is accustomed to testing new features.

It's one universe. The mode is only how you interact with other players. This makes economic changes not viable. The whole design of the PvP system means that Blockades are not viable gameplay for influencing system change. They are fun, I'm sure, so go for it... but don't expect everyone to accept your idea of fun. The Lugh guys sat at the star and spammed all incoming players with requests to only do CSG missions. They forced a station ownership change doing this. They want to go further and actually force the system to drop from the Federation. FDev are making sure their game mechanics are working (they are not, but at least they are listening to positive feedback.)

The feedback they listened to about blockades was that blockaders were ramming ships without warning and without consequences. So that's going to change...

I will answer with things I like about ED. I absolutely love the flying physics and the "always in cockpit feel". I also absolutely adore the sound design, one of the best by far. The whole galaxy being rather "scientifically accurate" is also a very nice touch.

Are you just trying to get a reaction or is there something we can help you with?

Yes, I'm trying to get something else than the rather standard "it was by design", "it isn't the game you are looking for" responses.

I would also like some people to admit the fact that if it was some other (well hated) company like Ubisoft or EA that did what FD did, the internet would BLOW UP about it.

Yet somehow when FD launches a half-baked product, then everything is peachy.

You make me laugh so much. When you can have a maximum of 32 players in one system at any one time (on a single players computer) how will you do system blockades? Also as there are about 300,000 possible players playing Elite do you really think that the effect on open play is dictated by the other possible 299,999 players who could be in totally different systems to you and not even seen on your computer screen?

The whole game is balanced otherwise you would see a sudden drop in prices in one system where people start the game, which it clearly does not. Remember everything is supply and demand. If you notice the stations never run out of stuff, and that's not because somebody have taken it all, as within 10 minutes its all restocked.

The thing that changes the game is the person behind the screen. The "I want's" think they are right by stating facts which are false and flawed.

I guess that's the thing about Independants vs Corporates.

My guess is that when Elite Dangerous launched it was practically everything that Elite 84 was with most of what Frontier had, with the rest and more to come. There are a lot of people who are absolutely over the moon (if you excuse the pun) that they can play Elite now. So yes, there are some people, I happen to be one and I'm not going to apologise for that, who will back FDev and their game as designed to the hilt.

That's not to say I don't have things to say about how things work... I have a thread here that discusses my proposal to deal with what I see as a problem: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=97498 and I concede that there is work to do. But "unfinished", "not what was advertised" and all the rest, I can't accept.

Total posting history: 9 posts. All griping about how the game is "half-baked", "unfinished" or includes features you don't like - even though those features are intentional, not bugs, and common knowledge well in advance of the games release.

Tell me, what possible response do you think you'd get OTHER than "why are you still playing it then?"

Where does it say that I won't be able to group with my friends at launch ? Please provide me with a link to the ED's website.

Well then, lets go the the main page of Elite shall we ? There, we can clearly READ: "Fly alone or with friends, fight for a cause or go it alone; your actions change the galaxy around you in an ever unfolding story."
There you have it. Completely false advertising.

They can avoid choke points and blockading/camping if they want using the mechanics you've mentioned and other means I'm sure. The impression I get is that DB and FD want to mitigate griefers. The scenario you imagined there - of trying to avoid your nemesis camping outside the no-fire zone - is;

A) one you will never have to face if you don't want this kind of gameplay - just play solo.
B) one that players who want to experience it in multiplayer, likely won't experience either if the current switch to solo option removes any incentive for players to play in this way.

Why would a player switch to solo if they want to experience blockading/camping?

The only ones who would switch are people who DON'T want to experience it.

Why should people like you get to have fun at the expense of their fun?

There we have it. Completely non-false advertising. :p

Just because you are having problems yourself (something you could take up with a support ticket) does not mean everyone else is. Some people happily end up with their friends. Wings and other things that are going to be tested in 1.1 will actually improve this situation.

However, wings will not have (never have) as much impact as when the Lugh people are trying to prove now.

So put in a ticket for a refund and go about some other game you hate.

With friends? Done that. It was buggy, yes, but it's a known issue being worked on and we know allied wings of players is something that's coming in a month or two which will require those bugs to be fixed.

My actions changing the galaxy? Done that too, participating in the "crimsonization" of the Lugh system. What's more, done it in all three modes to the same galaxy and that's how it is supposed to work.

Sure, ED has bugs. FD are working on them. What they are not working on, however, is changing fundamental features of the game no matter how many brand new posters crop up on the forums wailing that they should. I've lost count of how many folks have a posting history less than dozen posts old and all save one or two are futile rants in this thread.

The way the modes work and the ability to switch between them isn't ever going to change. Even if FD were having second thoughts about it, which based on their public statements they are not, it's too fundamentally embedded in the architecture of the game. To change it they'd have to redo the netcode from the ground up and deal with all the consequent changes throughout the rest of the program. It would be like rewriting the game from scratch and isn't going to happen. Ever.

If you believe different or think participating in this thread is going to change FD's mind, I've got a bridge to sell you...

Except all of it.

These actions in Open affect Solo and visa-versa (Unless I've got that wrong).

First group - players in Solo are affected by their actions so how long before the moans about lack of x,y,z start.

What if there's a player using that system as a base (Solo), in come this bunch and all of a sudden their influence, market etc they've worked at is gone to pot.

Second - It's a blockade. - Wonder how I can get round that...

First group - that's the reality of a dynamic universe. It's constantly changing. This is a plus, not a minus.

Second - blockades are something the game is specifically designed to limit. I also strongly suspect that the total number of people getting through by "switching" is extremely low. Odds are, there are as many people in solo running missions in support of these players as there are running missions against them. If that number is low, then it's irrelevant and if it's high, the blockade wouldn't have worked anyway. Not to mention that people playing open but on a different continent (so the majority of open players) will also be unaffected by the blockade.

Can you elaborate what exactly you were able to achieve together ? In terms of game mechanics: what did you do with your friends ?

Just because you are having problems yourself (something you could take up with a support ticket) does not mean everyone else is. Some people happily end up with their friends.

And how will support help me ? The system does not work, is bugged and FD needs to patch it. How exactly would support help me here again ?

So put in a ticket for a refund and go about some other game you hate.

Can't. They are not issuing refunds to people that already played the game.

I don't think that many are suggesting everything is fine.

And FD have stated that both co-operative play (wings) and chat options are being looked at and worked on along with a lot of other stuff.

I guess we'd all like it sooner but clearly these things take time to get right..

Honestly, posts like this are extremely unhelpful and unwarranted. Companies change major game mechanics all the time, and go back on things they said wouldn't change all the time (see the offline mode fiasco, for example).

People in this thread have been asked for their opinions on solo vs open -- we get it, you want things to stay as they are. Some of us don't. It will be up to FD to keep track on what the player base is doing and decide what direction to take things in. Your understanding of the server architechture is probably not as advanced as you think, and anything that can be written once can be changed.

Dsicussing pros and cons is nothing but good for the game. Shooting down dissenting opinion because 'it will never change EVER EVER because some dev said so' isn't constructive in the least.

And how will support help me ? The system does not work, is bugged and FD needs to patch it. How exactly would support help me here again ?

There are bugs. If you report them, the developers can pull your logs (not meant to be funny, but hey) and see what is going on and maybe fix the problem now, or confirm the fix for 1.1 or 1.2 that they have in the pipeline. That helps you.

And you appear to be avoiding my pointed attempts to point you in the direction of Lugh. So let me bring it here:
Yes indeed we seem to have affected a lot of systems with our experience in Lugh just look to Belarsuk and Sesuang. In case of LTT 4846 we have to care that they dont get expansion state like it happened to Belarsuk right now. The Progressive Party of LTT 4846 (Allegiance Federation) is at 74.9% atm. So i appeal to all Cmdrs to stop trading with them even if the source of Gold at Mullane Port is very tempting :)

PS: Interesting didnt know about the battle check points in Eta Crucis.

I'm in open, (not right now, right now I'm in the pub getting increasingly hostile glances from my wife and her friends, but anyway) and that is where the vast majority of my gameplay will take place. If you want to deter me from operating in a system you'll have to catch me and blow me up, as nature intended. Because that's the game, and great fun it is too.

But I'm a man with limited time. I barely have enough hours to run one save, let alone two. So if I had to be locked in one mode it'd be solo, since I'd rather be able to play whenever I like, regardless of my mood or level of drunkeness, than be able to interact with others. I suspect I would be far from alone in that choice.

So despite being by my nature antisocial (the glances have turned into meaningful throat clearing and fidgeting) with the system as is, I play in open and will stay there the vast majority of the time. Take the choice away from me, and you'll never see me in open again. Which would be a shame, I'm told I'm a delight.;)

Pretty much sums me up too. Limited time and a sometimes wonky connection would mean I'd be forced to be in solo rather than the roughly 70/30 Open/Solo split I currently play.
